この犬は誰のですか。Whose dog is this?

Postby Sheegoth » March 10th, 2014 5:04 pm

皆さん、こんにちは。エリックです。
Hey everyone. Eric here. This is a practice post. Please correct my mistakes, all right? ありがとうございます! :)

ポール:この犬は誰のですか。
ボブ:その犬は僕のですよ。
ポール:あっ。どうぞ。

Paul: Whose dog is this?
Bob: That dog is mine.
Paul: Ah. Here you go.

エリックさん、

I'm pretty sure that is correct, but I would rather say:-
これは誰の犬ですか?
それは僕の犬です。
I can't honestly say whether this way is 'more' or 'less' correct, though.

Another useful sentence would be:-
誰がこの犬を飼っていますか?("Who keeps this dog?")

For most things, the way to say you have something is:-
私は新しい車があります。- "I have a new car."
But you can't use this for people and animals. For people, it's a simple case of changing あります to います:-
私は弟がいます - "I have a younger brother."
But for animals (such as pets or livestock), you would say:-
私は犬を飼っています。- "I have a dog."
The actual verb is 飼う (kau, "to keep / to raise"), but it's rarely used in its dictionary form, because keeping an animal isn't a "complete-able" verb, so it's normally in the progressive form 飼っています (katte imasu).
