Mac Users - Can you help me?

Postby Liz21 » June 28th, 2006 9:04 pm

Hi!
I copied some Japanese text from the internet and tried to paste it into AppleWorks but it comes out garbage. How can I set up AppleWorks to show characters? I know how to open System Preferences and set International so that I can type hiragana and katakana, for example.
Would appreciate someone's help!

I don't have Appleworks, so I can't check it in there myself. But have you tried it with TextEdit or any other programs? If not, try it and see what happens.

Hi, Jason, you little genius!!
I keep forgetting about Text Edit. I put it in my dock so I'll have it handy.
Yes, that worked!

Would still like to hear from someone about adjusting AppleWorks so it can have Japanese text copied into it.

As I recall, someone (you?) asked this question on the old jpod101 site. The answer is simply that it cannot be done, short of buying the Japanese version of Appleworks. The English version doesn't contain support for UNICODE or Japanese text encoding.

Dear Bueller,
Yes! That was me!
I completely forgot about it. You answered me before. I hope I don't ask a third time!!
It's funny, though, sometimes I can paste in Japanese text and sometimes it doesn't work?????????????????

I think I remember seeing that long thread about Japanese and Appleworks a while back. :D

I'd stick to TextEdit (or any text editor/word processor that uses the standard OS X system text view)... it sounds like Unicode behavior in Appleworks ranges from nonexistent to unpredictable from what I've read online.

Mark,
You said, "it sounds like Unicode behavior in Appleworks ranges from nonexistent to unpredictable from what I've read online."

Thanks, very helpful.
