I would like to recommend a new textbook called "Japanese Step by Step" by Gene Nishi 2nd Edition published in 2010 by McGraw Hill. I like the way the author uses diagrams to explain how verbs are derived - they seem to stick in my mind better than other explanations. Verbs are grouped under a,i, u, e, o format with u being the dictionary form, which the author calls V3 as u is the 3rd on the a,i,u,e,o list. Chapter 6 contains 13 uses of V3 with examples. Lots of other grammar as well - good for beginners or advanced beginners.
