Question about vocabulary in JLPT3

Postby arbrownlow » August 12th, 2006 11:24 am

Hi guys

I have a question, hope it hasn't cropped up here before.

Based on JLPT Test Content Specification 2006, as presented on the jlptstudy site:

For JLPT 3 kyuu:

There seem to be 284 kanji + 103 4 kyuu kanji to learn

Which seemed fine. 387 chinese characters to learn - ok not bad.

Then I see I vocab list of 1409 words (including loads of new kanji compounds!) and I wondered, do I have to know all these 1409 VOCAB words in kanji form or do I have to simply know them in kana (hiragana/katakana) form? I reckon I can just about memorise the kana but the kanji forms are complex to write and recognise.

Cheers

Andy

Don't panic!

If you are able to memorise those 387 Chinese characters you'll be OK. The words that use characters outside the set list will be presented in hiragana. One other thing, remember you won't have to write any kanji; you just need to be able to recognise them.

If you are studying seriously now, I think you should have little problem passing the test - good luck!

Thanks for your reply. That's good to know that the test will give the hiragana for those vocab words. I saw that vocab list and thought - wow what a lot of new kanji!
