Lesson 18. |
Looking Deeper Into Kanji. |
This Japanese kanji video lesson will show you how to draw and pronounce the kanji that means to watch or to look. |
Okay let’s draw the kanji for this lesson. The meaning of this kanji is to look or to watch. |
And we are going to have a simple trick for memorizing this kanji in just a minute but let’s first look at the readings. |
Remember there are two readings in Japanese kanji? The one is 音読み (on'yomi) the On reading, and the other one is 訓読み (kun'yomi) the Kun reading. Long story short, the On reading comes from Chinese and the Kun reading comes from Japanese. |
Now let’s look at the On reading for today’s kanji. The On reading for this kanji is ケン (ken). The Kun reading for this kanji is み (mi) as in みる (miru) . |
Now remember the trick that I was telling about? Let’s look at that now. |
So remember this top part is the kanji for eye? The bottom part, it looks like legs. So this kind of looks like a monster for Monster Jinx, big eye, big legs. ほよよよよん (hoyoyoyoyon). |
Anyways, let’s look at how to draw this kanji. Pay attention to the stroke order. Let’s try it again. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. |
Now let’s look at some sample words. |
Ta-dah. |
The On reading for this kanji is ken. Here we have いっけん (ikken). You can see the kanji for first and you can see the kanji for to watch. So this word means first sight. |
The Kun reading for this kanji is mi. Here we have みため (mitame). This word means outlook. |

Hideみなさん、 How was this kanji? ^^

Thank you for your comment. Yes 見た目 also indicates "Appearance or looks" but since definition of Outlook involves "mental attitude or view; point of view:", Outlook can be in definition of 見た目.
Keep up the good work and Feel free to ask us any questions.

Hiroko is so funny! Her memorization technique here is so funny!
japanese guy!

With regards to your question mi / ru, as in miru.
the video is giving an example were the the kanji is pronounced mi (kun reading)
The verb miru is "to see".
so the video is not saying "mi as in ru" but "mi as in miru",
but when miru is pronounced fast it is possible to miss the mi sound.
hope that helps.
good luck cheers
japanese guy san,
konnichiwa.
Well…the Japanese langauge doesn't have the ‘mi as’ which you mentioned…
Therefore, I am not sure about your question.
Could you please tell me when she says so?
I will check it and answer your question.

Thank you so much, my first language is portuguese. But this is only in english?
Konnichiwa.
Well… I am not sure about your first language however, in English
most kanji have at least two different kinds of readings: kunyomi (訓読み), which is the Japanese reading, and onyomi (音読み), which is the original Chinese reading. The kunyomi is usually used when the kanji stands alone, and the onyomi when it is part of a compound. To give an example, the kanji 水 (“water”) can be read as either “mizu” (kunyomi) or “sui” (onyomi). However, there are exceptions to this rule that simply must be remembered.
I hope it could help you.
