Numbers from 1001 to 10000. In just a few minutes, you are going to learn the numbers up to 10,000. In the previous lessons, you learned the numbers up to 1000. Let’s start by reviewing the numbers from 100 to 1000. ひゃく、ひゃく。にひゃく、にひゃく。 (hyaku, hyaku. nihyaku, nihyaku.) さんびゃく、さんびゃく。よんひゃく、よんひゃく。 (sanbyaku, sanbyaku. yonhyaku, yonhyaku.) ごひゃく、ごひゃく、ろっぴゃく、ろっぴゃく。 (gohyaku, gohyaku, roppyaku, roppyaku.) ななひゃく、ななひゃく。はっぴゃく、はっぴゃく。 (nanahyaku, nanahyaku. happyaku, happyaku.) きゅうひゃく、きゅうひゃく。せん、せん。 (kyūhyaku, kyūhyaku. sen, sen.) Okay, let’s go through the multiples of 1000 one by one. To create multiples of 1000, you simply put a number in front of せん。 (sen.) Pay attention, we will have similar sound changes for 3, 6 and 8. You remember, 1000, it’s せん。 (sen.) . So what’s 2000 2 に。 (ni.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) so literally 2000? にせん。 (ni-sen.) what about 3000? 3 さん。 (san.) 1000 ぜん。 (zen.) せん。 (sen.) turned into ぜん。 (zen.) here さんぜん。 (san-zen.) 4000 4 よん。 (yon.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) よんせん。 (yon-sen.) 5000 5 ご。 (go.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) ごせん。 (gosen.) 6000 6 ろく。 (roku.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) This time, せん (sen) doesn’t change. ろくせん。 (roku-sen.) 7000 7 なな。 (nana.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) ななせん。 (nana-sen.) 8000 8 は。 (ha.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) So here, the はち (hachi) turns into a は。 (ha.) はっせん。 (ha-ssen.) 9000 9 きゅう。 (kyū.) 1000 せん。 (sen.) きゅうせん。 (kyū-sen.) So this time we only had two exceptions with さんぜん (san-zen) and はっせん (ha-ssen) さんぜん、さん、ぜん、さんぜん。 (san-zen, san, zen, san-zen.) はっせん、は、せん、はっせん。 (ha-ssen, ha, sen, ha-ssen.) Okay let’s move on to 10,000. What’s 10000? じゅうせん? (jū sen?) No, it’s いちまん。 (ichi-man) いち、まん。 (ichi, man.) いちまん。 (ichi-man.) I am going to show you the Japanese currency. The Japanese currency is yen. In Japanese it’s えん (en) いちえん。 (ichi-en.) ごえん。 (go-en.) じゅうえん。 (jū-en.) ごじゅうえん。 (go-jū-en.) ひゃくえん。 (hyaku-en.) ごひゃくえん。せんえん。にせんえん。ごせんえん。いちまんえん。 (Go-hyaku-en. Sen'en. Ni-sen-en. Go-sen-en. Ichi-man-en.) Finally we have a quiz. Are you ready? How much is this? いくらですか? (Ikura desu ka?) How much is this? ごひゃくにじゅうごえん。 (Go-hyaku ni-jū go-en.) いくらですか? (Ikura desu ka?) How much is this? にせんさんびゃくえん。 (Ni-sen san-byaku-en.) Great job. You’ve learned the numbers up to 10,000. |

Hmmmmm Good

Thank you so much for your comment😄
せん (sen) is せ(se) and ん(n), so you just pronounce them together.
まん (man) also is ま (ma) and ん (n). The Japanese vowel sounds are different English. This lesson should help you understand it better😇👍

And for the "n" sound, this one😉

What is the correct pronunciation for "sen" and "man" ? Should I pronounce sen as "seng" or "sen as in in english" with n at the end? Same goes with man, "mang" or "man"?
Hi Chris Roberts,
Thanks for the question.
万 (man) is a unique money unit which doesn't exist in English.
千 (sen) is one thousand.
In English, 10,000 is 'ten thousand.' But in Japanese, we don't say jū-sen. We use 万(man) unit instead and it is ichi-man.
Sincerely,
Miki H

Ok. If ichiman is ten thousand then why is man listed as ten thousand?
