INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Chris: Chris here. If You Come to Japan, Everything Will Be Fine.
Naomi: レッスンの２３、２４と「休日分散化案」について話してきましたが、今回が最後のレッスンなんですね。
Natsuko: そして Upper Intermediate のシリーズとしても、最後のレッスンなんです。
Naomi: そうですねー。
Chris: 寂しいですね～。
Naomi: そして、その最後のレッスンの文法ポイントは？
Natsuko: 「～ば、済む」、例えば「君が行けば済むんだ。」
Chris: “If you go, everything will be fine.”
Naomi: 今回もまた、神田さんと西村さん、二人の男性の会話ですね。
Natsuko: はい。友達同士なので、カジュアルに話しています。「休日分散化案」に対しての意見や疑問などをお互いに言っていますね。
Chris: These are two friends speaking casual Japanese. They’re expressing their ideas about holiday dispensation.
Natsuko: それでは、会話を聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Please listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
西村:そもそも、その「休日分散化案」っていうのは何のために考えられたんだ？
神田:「観光業界の雇用の安定と促進」のためだよ。
西村:なんだそりゃ？
神田:つまり、今みたいに、ある一時期だけ忙しくて、それ以外の時期は暇だと、観光地のホテルやお店は、安定的に人を雇うことが難しいだろ。
だけど、忙しい時期が分散されれば、ある程度長期間安定して人を雇うことができるわけだ。
西村:ふーん。でも、まず、有給休暇をとりやすくするにはどうしたらいいかを考える方が先なんじゃないか。
神田:そのとおりなんだよ。仮に「休日分散化案」が通ったとして、もし、自分達が休みのときに、取引先の会社が働いていたら、どうする？
大企業なら、「当社はお休みです」って言えば済むけど、うちみたいな中小企業の場合は、そういう訳にもいかないよ。
結局、担当者は出勤するはめになるんだ。
しかも、そのあと、代休も取れず、休みは取れずじまいだ。
西村:そうだよなー。
神田:それに、混雑の緩和とかいうけど、地域ごとに休日をずらせば済むってわけでもないよな。
だって、それぞれの地域の人たちは同じ時期に休むわけだけだから、その周りの観光地や道路は、前と同じように混雑するに決まってるよ。
どう考えても、おかしな案だよ。
Natsuko: 次は、英語が入ります。
西村:そもそも、その「休日分散化案」っていうのは何のために考えられたんだ？
Chris: What was this "proposition for staggered holidays" meant for in the first place?
神田:「観光業界の雇用の安定と促進」のためだよ。
Chris: It's for "the stability and encouragement of long-term employment in tourism."
西村:なんだそりゃ？
Chris: What the heck is that?
神田:つまり、今みたいに、ある一時期だけ忙しくて、それ以外の時期は暇だと、観光地のホテルやお店は、安定的に人を雇うことが難しいだろ。
Chris: In other words...the way it is now, with sightseeing areas and hotels having a busy period and a quiet period, it's difficult to give people stable employment.
神田:だけど、忙しい時期が分散されれば、ある程度長期間安定して人を雇うことができるわけだ。
Chris: But, if the busy period can be dispersed, then they can employ people for a certain length of time.
西村:ふーん。
Chris: Hmm…
西村:でも、まず、有給休暇をとりやすくするにはどうしたらいいかを考える方が先なんじゃないか。
Chris: but they should first think about how they can make it easier to take a paid vacation.
神田:そのとおりなんだよ。
Chris: That's exactly right.
神田:仮に「休日分散化案」が通ったとして、もし、自分達が休みのときに、取引先の会社が働いていたら、どうする？
Chris: Even if the "proposition for staggered holidays" goes through, what would you do if a client company was working while you were on holiday?
神田:大企業なら、「当社はお休みです」って言えば済むけど、うちみたいな中小企業の場合は、そういう訳にもいかないよ。
Chris: A big company can say "We're closed" and that would be fine, but a small company like ours can't really say that.
神田:結局、担当者は出勤するはめになるんだ。
Chris: In the end, the person in charge will have to work.
神田:しかも、そのあと、代休も取れず、休みは取れずじまいだ。
Chris: Also, after that, you can't even take a compensatory holiday, and in the end, you don't get a break.
西村:そうだよなー。
Chris: Yeah, that's true...
神田:それに、混雑の緩和とかいうけど、地域ごとに休日をずらせば済むってわけでもないよな。
Chris: Also, they say it's to ease the crowding, but shifting the holidays by region doesn't necessarily solve this.
神田:だって、それぞれの地域の人たちは同じ時期に休むわけだけだから、その周りの観光地や道路は、前と同じように混雑するに決まってるよ。
Chris: People in that region will be taking a break at the same time, so the sightseeing areas and roads in that area will be crowded as usual.
神田:どう考えても、おかしな案だよ。
Chris: Any way you look at it, it's a strange proposition.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: 「日本」って祝日が多いですよね。Japan has a lot of national holidays.
Naomi: そうですね。いくつあるか知ってます？
Chris: いや、わからないんですけども、ただ多いな～と。
Natsuko: 全部で１５あるんですよね。
Naomi: あ、さすが！よくご存知で。
Natsuko: 数えました。(笑）
Naomi: 日本の祝日は一年間に、１５日間あるんです。これは、先進国の中だと一番多いんだそうですよ。
Chris: 先進国は “advanced countries” ですね。へ～、そうなんですか。
Natuko: Innovative Language Learning では、いろいろな国の人が働いてますよね。なので、ちょっと聞いてみました。まず、ドイツ。ドイツ人のマービンに聞いたら、「１１か１２」と言っていました。
Natsuko: １１か、１２って？あ！もしかして、住んでる場所によって違ったりするんですか。
Naomi: そうみたいです。オーストラリアも、どうやら住んでる場所によるらしいですね。「１０日から１２日」なんて言ってました。それから韓国は、結構多いみたいで、１４日。
Natsuko: あ、韓国は日本とそんなに変わらないんですね。日本だと、有給休暇 (paid holiday) が取りにくい会社はありますから、そういう会社に働いている人にとっては、祝日が１５日あるというのは嬉しいですね。
Chris: ダイアログで、西村さんが有給休暇に対してコメントを言いましたよね。
Natsuko: あ、そうですね。「有給休暇をとりやすくするにはどうしたらいいかを考える方が先なんじゃないか。」って言ってましたよね。
Naomi: う～ん、そうなんですよね。病気になったときにしか有給休暇を使えない、という会社も確かにあるんです。あと、日本には病欠 (paid sick leave) がないんですよねー。有給休暇 (paid holiday) だけしかないんです。
Chris: So when you're sick you have to use your paid holiday?
Naomi: 基本的には、そうなっちゃうんですね。
Chris: 日本は先進国ですが、日本の労働の環境は先進国どころじゃないですね。Japan is a developed country, but Japanese working environment is far from a developed country's one.
Naomi: おお！「先進国どころじゃない」前回の文法の復習を入れてくださったんですね。ちょっと、話も長くなってきたので、単語に入っていきましょうか。
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Naomi: まず最初の表現は？
Natsuko: 「はめ」
Chris: "unfavorable or desperate situation"
Natsuko: 「はめ」は「好ましくない状況」「自分にとって、よくない状況」という意味です。後ろに、「になる」をつけて、「はめになる」「～はめになる」と使います。
Chris: So はめになる means something like "to get stuck with unfavorable or unpleasant circumstances."
Naomi: そうですね。「～はめになる」は「そういう状況になってしまった」という意味です。例えば？
Natsuko: 「行くはめになる」
Chris: “to end up going somewhere”
Natsuko: 「払うはめになる」
Chris: “to end up paying”
例文お願いします。
Natsuko: 「友達の元彼とデートをしたら、友達を失うはめになった。」
Chris: “Since I went on a date with my friend's ex-boyfriend. I ended up losing my friend.”
Naomi: ま～、そうでしょうね。では、次の表現を見てみましょう。
Natsuko: 「～ずじまい」
Chris: "to end up not doing something."
Naomi: この「ず」は「否定」(negative) です。「ない」と同じ意味ですね。
「しまい」「じまい」は「終わり」という意味です。「おしまい」の「しまい」と同じ意味です。
で、このフレーズ「nai-form stem + ずじまい」で「～しないで終わってしまった」という意味なんです。
Chris: So the formation is [nai-form stem of a verb + ずじまい] means "to finish without doing something" or "to end up not doing something"
Naomi: 「買い物に行ったけど、何も買わないで帰ってきた。」なら、
Natsuko: 「買わずじまい」
Chris: “I didn’t end up buying anything.”
Naomi: 「パーティーに行きました。人と話していたら、何も食べられなかった。」
Natsuko: 「食べずじまい」
Chris: ““I didn’t end up eating anything”
Naomi: では、今紹介した表現を復習しましょう。カラオケに行きました。なつこさんはカラオケが大嫌いです。でも、周りの人に「なつこさん、歌って歌って～」って言われて、嫌だけど歌を歌いました。
Natsuko: は～。「歌うはめになった。」
Naomi: カラオケに行きました。クリスさんは、歌が大好きです。でもたくさん人がいて、歌うことができませんでした。「あ～あ～、結局、一曲も歌えなかったなぁ。」
Chris: 「歌わずじまい」or maybe 「歌えずじまい」
Naomi: そうですね。
Naomi: では、文法に入りましょう。このレッスンの文法は、「～ば、済む」。では、なつこさん、例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: はい。「僕が謝れば済むなら、謝るよ。」
Chris: "If apologizing will solve the problem, then I'll apologize."
Naomi: この「～ば、済む」ですが、「ば」は “ばconditional” ですね。
Natsuko: つまり “if” という意味ですね。
Naomi: そうです。そして、次の「済む」は「解決する」(to solve a problem) とか「終わる」(to finish) という意味なんです。
なので、「～ば、済む」なら「もし～すれば、解決する」という意味なんですね。
Chris: The focus of this lesson is the expression of ～ば、済む. 済む literally means "to finish" but in this case it means "to solve things". So, it is used in the formation of "ba-conditional form + 済む," and altogether it means "if you [verb], everything will be fine" or "doing [action] would solve the problem."
Naomi: お金を払えば、問題が解決できるときってありますよね。そういう状況をなんて言います？
Chris: There are situations where you can solve the problem by simply paying money, right? How do you describe that situation?
Natsuko: 「お金を払えば済む。」
Chris: "If you pay the money, everything will be fine." or "Paying money will solve the problem."
Naomi: お金を払わなくても、ただ「ごめん」という言葉だけで、問題が解決できる場合もあります。そういうときは何て言いましょう？
Chris: Or just saying "sorry" could solve the problem. In that case...
Natsuko: 「『ごめん』と言えば済む。」または「謝れば済む。」
Chris: "If you apologize, everything will be fine." or "apologizing will solve the problem."
Naomi: では、さっきの例文にもう一度、戻りましょう。
Natsuko: 「僕が謝れば済むなら、謝るよ。」
Chris: "If apologizing will solve the problem, then I'll apologize."
Naomi: Conditional の中に conditional が入っている、いや～な文章なんですね、(笑）
ちょっと細かく見ていきましょう。
Natsuko: 「僕が謝れば済む」
Chris: "If I apologize, everything will be fine" or "my apology will solve the problem"
Natsuko: 「なら」
Chris: "if", "then", "if so"
Natsuko: 「謝るよ」
Chris: "I'll apologize"
So, all together,
Natsuko:「僕が謝れば済むなら、謝るよ。」
Chris: "If my apologizing will solve the problem, then I'll apologize."
Naomi: そういえば、最近歯が痛くて、歯医者さんに行ったんです。見てもらったんですけど、虫歯はなかったんですね。そうしたら、お医者さんに「ストレスですね」って言われて・・・。
Chris: ストレスだったんですか。
Naomi: いえいえ。やっぱり痛くて、他の歯医者さんに行ったら、虫歯が見つかったんです。
Natsuko: あら、ひどいじゃないですか～。「ストレスだと言えば済むと思わないでよ～」って感じですよね。
Naomi: そう！それが、私の最近の「～ば、済む」の例文です。（笑）
Natsuko: なるほど！
Chris: 「～ば、済む」で思い出しました。日本人は問題があると、すぐ辞めますよね。
Naomi: あ、政治家とかね、会社の社長さんとかね。
Chris: あれに、そういう問題じゃない・・・とよく思います。
Natsuko: あああ！確かに。「辞めれば済む問題じゃない！」というところですよね。
