INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Anthony: Anthony here. This may be impossible, but...
Naomi: このタイトルはThis may be impossible, but… 無理かもしれないけど…みたいなニュアンスですかね。このレッスンの文法は何でしょうか。
Natsuko: 「何とか」 "somehow" いう意味でしょうかね。この言葉の使い方を勉強します。
Naomi: では今日のダイアログのストーリーについて教えてください。
Natsuko: 今日の主人公は女性です。主婦のようですね。台所で水が漏れているのを見つけて修理屋さんに電話をかけているようですよ。
Anthony: A woman, seems to be a housewife, is calling up a plumber after finding a water leak in her kitchen.
Naomi: 丁寧な会話のようですね。
Anthony: It sounds like a formal conversation.
DIALOGUE
Natsuko:次は英語が入ります。
女性:もしもし、水漏れの修理をお願いしたいんですが。
Anthony: Hello, I'm calling about getting a leak repaired.
修理屋の店員:はい、どういった症状ですか。
Anthony: Alright, what seems to be the problem?
女性:台所の蛇口の根元のあたりから、水がピューピュー漏れるんです。
Anthony: There's water leaking from around the base of the faucet in our kitchen sink.
: 最初のうちは、何とか我慢して使ってたんですけど、だんだんひどくなってきてしまって。。。
:At first I tried to ignore it and used the sink as usual, but it just kept getting worse.
: 今すぐに来てもらえませんか。
:Could you please send someone right away?
修理屋の店員:今、作業員が出払っていまして。。。早くても、明日のお昼過ぎになってしまいます。
: All of our repairmen are out at the moment..., The soonest we could get someone out there would be tomorrow afternoon.
女性:明日の午後ですか。。。何とか、朝のうちに来てもらえませんか。
: Tomorrow afternoon.... Is there any way they can come during the morning?
修理屋の店員:うーん、わかりました。じゃ、何とか、調整してみます
: Well, okay. I'll see what I can do.
女性:お願いします。それで、明日すぐ直るんですよね。
: Thank you. You'll be able to fix it right away tomorrow won't you?
修理屋の店員:はぁ、それは、状況によりますから。。。その場で直せない場合もありま
: Well that depends on the situation... there may be some cases where we wouldn't be able to fix it.
女性:じゃ、修理代は、大体いくらくらいかかりますか。
: Well do you know how much the repair fees will cost?
修理屋の店員:ですから、現物を拝見しないと、お見積もりもできないのですが、
: Like I said, we'll have to see the situation first before we can provide you with an estimate...
: パッキンの交換だけなら、何とか、3000円くらいで済むこともあります。
:if it's just a problem with the seals you may only end up paying 3000 yen.
女性:3000円くらいですね。わかりました。じゃ、明日の朝、お願いします。
: So it'll be 3000 yen - I see. See you tomorrow morning.
修理屋の店員:あ、あの、3000円とは言っていないのですが。。。(ガチャ、電話の切れる音)
: Uh, but I didn't say that it would be 3000 yen... (click as the phone hangs up)
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 水がピューピューもれる。。。ピューピューってどんな状態でしょかうね。
Natsuko: ま、噴水とは言わないけど、かなり勢いよく出ている感じですよね。
Naomi: 噴水ね。英語でいうと、どうゆう状態ですかね?
Anthony: like blood squirting out summarize several joglar.
NATSUKO: よくわかんないけれど。あんまり見たこと無い気がします。
Naomi:そうですね、人それぞれイメージを持つのは自由ですからね。イメージ的には、
なつこさんがさっき言ってくれたような、噴水 Water fountainなんかで、水が細く上に上がるのを想像する感じがしますよね。じゃあ、水がちょっとだけ漏れているなんて言うときにはどうします?
Natsuko: 例えば、水が?ちょろちょろ??漏れている。
あとはdrip by dripのようなときには、水がポタポタ漏れるなんて言いますよね。
Anthony: じゃ、たくさん、もれてるときはどう言いますか?
Natsuko: 水がジャージャー漏れる。
Naomi:ボタボタ漏れる。
Natsuko:なんか、濁点がつくんですね。
Naomi:擬態語って便利ですよね。相手に自分のイメージを伝えるのに、とっても便利だと思います。
Natsuko:面白いですよね。
Naomi:みなさんも水漏れで困った時があったら、ぜひ使ってみてください。
Natsuko:擬音語、擬態語のレッスンもありますからね。あれも役に立つと思いますよ
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Anthony: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: 「水道の修理というの」がダイアログのテーマなので、修理を頼むときに便利な単語を中心に見ていこうと思います。まず最初に
Natsuko: 修理
Anthony: repairing, mending
Natsuko: to repair は 「修理する」とか「なおす」と同じ意味 ですね。例えば、もし靴を直したければ、
Naomi: 靴の修理お願いします。or すみません、この靴を修理できますか。
Anthony: Could you repair these shoes?
Natsuko: 靴の修理は値段が決まっていますけど、もっと、高額になるもの、たとえば、車の修理とか、屋根の修理を頼むときに、値段は前もって、知りたいですよね。そういうときに便利なのが次の単語。
Naomi: 見積もり
Anthony: estimate, quote
Natsuko: 修理を始める前に、いくらかかるか、値段を教えてくださいということです。
Naomi: To estimate だと、「見積もる」、とか「見積もりを出す」です。ま、「計算する」to curriculateと同じ意味にもなります。例文をお願いします。
Natsuko: 車の修理にいくらかかるか、見積もりを出してください。
Anthony: Could you submit the quotation for repairing the car.
Naomi: 次は、「漏れる」
Anthony: To leak out
Naomi: これは 自動詞 Intransitive verbですから、「such and such がもれる 」例えば、情報が漏れる
Anthony: information leaks out
Natsuko: ガスが漏れる gas leaks out 空気がもれる air leaks out
Anthony: おしっこがもれる。leak urine
Naomi: あああーいいますね。小さい子が使ったり、小さい子がいるお父さんとか、お母さん、なんかも使いますよね。
Natsuko: 漏れるの名詞の形noun form は「漏れ」です。ですから、水漏れだと
Anthony: leaking of water, water leak
Natsuko: ガス漏れだと
Anthony: leaking of gas
Naomi:では、文法に入っていきましょう。

Lesson focus

Naomi:このレッスンの文法ポイントは、副詞の「なんとか」の使い方です。
Natsuko: これは副詞adverbの「なんとか」なんですね。ですから、名前を忘れちゃったときの「何とか」じゃないんですね。
Naomi: ん?名前を忘れちゃったときの「何とか?」
Natuko: ほら、例えば、人の名前がわからないときに、「何とかさん」とかいいませんか?
Anthony: 英語だと、何とかさん は。。。Mr./Ms. So-and so ですかね。
Naomi: ああ、言いますね。昨日「何とかバックスカフェに行って、何とかギャランテさんと会った。」とかね。
Anthony: 相当、手抜きですね。I went to something-bucks cafe and met something Galante
Natsuko: 全然、なんか匿名になってないですね。でも、今から勉強する「何とか」は副詞なので、使い方がちょっと違います。
Naomi: 副詞、adverbということは、
動詞verbと一緒に使うということですね。
Anthony: somehow...Nan to ka (何とか) is an adverb used to convey the meaning of "somehow", as in "someone does something somehow" and "something somehow happens".
Naomi: ちょっとわかりにくいですね。なので例文と一緒に見てみましょう。
Natsuko: 何とか、試験に合格した。
Anthony: I managed to pass the exam.
Naomi: もし、これ、なんとかがなければ、
Natsuko: 試験に合格した。
Anthony: I passed the exam.
Naomi: 「何とか」をいれると、「大変だったけど、難しかったけど、」と言うニュアンスが入ります。難しかった、大変だったというのを強調したい時に使いますね。ダイアログにはどんなふうに使われてましたは?
Natsuko: 何とか、朝のうちに来てもらえませんか。
Anthony: Is there any way you can come in the morning?
Natsuko: 最初、店員さんは、「早くても、明日のお昼過ぎになってしまいます。
Anthony: we won't be able to come until tomorrow afternoon, the very earliest"
Natsuko: つまり「朝に行くことはできません。」といっているんですよ。つまり、無理だ・・・といわいれているんですね。それでも、もう一度、頼んでいるので「何とか」を使っています。
Naomi: 難しいのはわかっているけど、それでも、あえてお願いしているんですよね。
Anthony: When used in a request expression like 「何とか~してもらえませんか」, it has the nuance of "I know it's probably impossible, but I'd still like to make this request".
Naomi: では、例文をお願いします。
Anthony: 彼女に、プロポーズをして、何とか「イエス」という答えをもらった。
Natsuko: その何とかの秘訣を知りたいですよね。
Naomi: これ、すぐにYesと言ってくれたんじゃなくて、努力をしてYesと言わせた感じがしますよね。最初、えー、結婚?みたいな感じで渋っていたのを説得した感じが。あと、私は個人的に「なんとかなるよ」というフレーズは好きですね。
Anthony:頼もしい。
Natsuko:前向きでいいですよね。
Naomi:これ、「なんとかなるよ」って何、英語だと…
Anthony: It's going to be OK. or Everything is going to be all right.

Outro

Naomi: では、今日のレッスンはこの辺で。
Natsuko: それじゃ、また。
Anthony: See you next lesson.
