INTRODUCTION
Natsuko: こんにちは、なつこです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Anthony: Anthony here. Japanese You Need Just in Case.
Naomi: 新しいシーズンが始まります。
Natsuko: 第3シーズンですね。
Naomi: そして、この第3シーズンからはアンソニーさんがホストになります。
Natsuko: よろしくお願いします。
Anthony: こちらこそ、よろしくお願いいたします。
Naomi: アンソニーさんの自己紹介は今日のボーナストラックに入っていますので、そちらもぜひチェックして下さい。なつこさん、早速ですが、今日のレッスン文法とは何でしょう。
Natsuko: 誘えるもんなら、誘ってみろよ
Anthony: The target grammar of this lesson is nara conditional.
Natsuko: 今日の会話は二人の同僚同士の会話です。上原さんと田口さんという名前の二人の男性が会社で、年賀状について話しています。
Naomi:年賀状というのはNew years greeting cardsですね。
Natsuko: This conversation takes place at the office. Two colleagues, Mr. Taguchi and Ueda, are talking about New Year's cards. 同僚同士、しかもどちらも男性同士なので、かなり、カジュアルな会話ですね。
Anthony: Since the conversation is between two colleagues, They’re speaking in informal Japanese.
Natsuko: あ、それから、今日の会話には四字熟語も登場します。
Naomi:そうですね。
Natsuko: あの、四字熟語のレッスンシリーズを聞いてた人にはいい復習になると思いますよ。
Anthony: And also, one 四字熟語 appears in today's conversation. If you've been listening to our Yojijukugo lessons, this lesson will be a good review.
Natsuko: それでは、聞いてみましょう。
Anthony: Let's listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Naomi: 次は英語が入ります。
上原:優香ちゃんから、年賀状もらっちゃったよ。(鼻歌)
Anthony: I got a New Year’s postcard from Yuka-chan. (humming)
田口:何、浮かれてるんだか。
Anthony: Why are you so giddy?
上原:じゃ、お前、あんなかわいい子から年賀状もらえるものなら、もらってみろよ!Anthony: So, if you think you can get postcards from cute girls like her, then go ahead.
:しかも、この文面、見てくれよ。
Plus, look at what she wrote,
:「今年は、ぜひ、上原さんと一緒にゴルフさせて頂きたいです!」だぜ~!
"I very much would like to play golf with you this year!"
:これで、誘わないのは、失礼だよなっ!
Which means it's rude if I don't invite her to golf, right?!
田口:はぁ、お前、熱でもあるんじゃないのか?!
Anthony: Man, did you break out into a fever?
:本当に、あの優香ちゃんを誘えるもんなら、誘ってみろよ。
If you really think it's that easy, go ahead and invite her.
上原:お~、見てろよ。さっそく、スカイプ、スカイプ。
Anthony: OK, watch me. Check it out, she's on Skype.
:「優香ちゃん、年賀状ありがとう。ゴルフするなんて、知らなかったよ。さっそくだけど、今度の日曜日は、どう?」 送信!
"Yuka-chan, thanks for the postcard. I didn't know you play golf. I know it's kind of soon, but how about this coming Sunday?" Send!
上原:おっ、返事が来た、来た。
Anthony: Oh, she replied.
:「お誘いありがとうございます。・・・せっかくなんですが、今週の日曜日は、ちょっと都合が悪いんです。すみません。」か。。
"Thank you for the invitation...I appreciate the offer, but next Sunday is not good for me. Sorry."
:じゃ、「来週の日曜日は、どう?」 で、送信!
OK, "So how about Sunday next week?" Send!
上原:「その日もちょっと。。。」か。。。じゃ、「再来週の・・・」
Anthony: "I'm busy that day, too..."...Sooo, "So what about the week after that?..."
田口:おいおい。お前、いい加減に、気づけよ!社交辞令だったってことに!
Anthony: Hey, hey. Take a hint, will you? She was just being polite in the postcard!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: 残念でしたね。
Natsuko: そうですね。
Naomi: ユウカちゃんも、罪な女ですね。
Natsuko: まあ、でも、社交辞令をあんまりまともに受け取っちゃいけないってことですね。
Naomi: アンソニーさん今日のストーリー何かコメントありますか。
Anthony: 実らなくて残念でしたね。
Natsuko: 確かにかなり頑張ってましたよね。
Anthony:はりきってました。
Naomi: 何回も何回もね。
Natsuko: ね。
Naomi: あと、年賀状なんですけど、なつこさんは大体、何枚くらい書きますか?
Natsuko: 毎年少なめなんですけれども、今年はちょっと多めに30枚くらいですかね。
Naomi: オー、えらいですね。私、もーねー、年賀状に返信するだけで精一杯。
Natsuko:そういう年もあります。
Naomi:アンソニーさん、年賀状書きます?
Anthony:そうですねー、ま、多い時は100枚ぐらいは書いてた年もありましたけども、
Natsuko:すごい。
Natsuko:100人友達がいるんだ。
Anthony:んー、でも年々減ってますね。
Natsuko:あ、だんだん友達が…
Anthony:はい、だんだん面倒くさくなってきて…
Natsuko:うん、そうなんですよね。あのー、最近はメールで済ませたりする人も多いみたいですねちょっと年賀状に関してリサーチをしてみたんですが、統計によると、年賀状を出す人は、日本人の年賀状を出す人は90パーセント
Natsuko: まだ結構多いですね。
Naomi: 大体60枚から70枚くらい書くんだそうです。
Natsuko:え?ずいぶん多いですね。
Anthony: So according to the survey, about 90% of employed people send New Year's greeting cards, and 60 to 70 cards are sent per person.
Natsuko: すごい数ですから、一年で一番、郵便局の人たちが忙しい時期でしょうね。
Naomi: ああ、間違いないでしょうね。
VOCAB LIST
Anthony: Let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.
Naomi: では、単語見て行きたいと思います。なつこさん、最初の単語は?
Natsuko: 浮かれる
Anthony: to feel elated
Natsuko: この浮かれるは、たぶん浮く(to float)から来ていると思います。今日のダイアログに出ってきた例は「何、浮かれてるんだか」
Anthony: Why are you so giddy? Or, literally “why are you floating?”
Natsuko: あのー、直訳するとちょっとおかしいですけど、[~んだか] というのはI wonderっていう感じにちょっと似ていますかね。あのー、驚いたり、あきれたりしている気持ちを表しますね。
Naomi: カジュアルな表現ですよね。
Natsuko: そうなんですよね。例えば、ちゃんとした日本語で言うと、[何をしているんですか。]
Naomi: 何してるんだか。
Natsuko: ですから、今日の、[何、浮かれているんだか] というフレーズは [何を浮かれているんですか]とちょっとあきれて聞いているんですね。
Naomi: 擬態語
Anthony: onomatopoeia
Naomi: を使って、うきうきするといってもいいですね。
Natsuko: そうですね。
Naomi: 「何、うきうきしているんだか」ていってもも同じことです。
Natsuko: この[うき]もたぶんfloatの[浮く]からきているんでしょうね。
Naomi:あ、そうですね。
Natsuko:地面に足がついてないとかよく言いますけど、何か、こう、ふわふわふわふわしている感じなんですよね。
Anthony:Maybe it's bit like the English phrase "Dancing on the ceiling."
Natsuko:あ、やっぱり高いとこに行くんですね。
Anthony:やっぱりそうですね。
Naomi:すごーい。やっぱり似ているんですね。
Naomi: 次の単語は「社交辞令」 "diplomatic remarks."
Natsuko: これは、四字熟語のレッスンでも紹介しましたが、この単語は二つの言葉からできています。社交 と 辞令 ですね。
Naomi: まず、Shakō (社交)というのは、簡単にいうなら、人と話すことですね。 "social relationship"で、辞令というのは挨拶、complementとかflattery
Anthony "perfunctory or formulaic expression or phrase." Things you have to say.
Naomi: はい。ですから、社交辞令というのは、人と話すときに使う、お世辞のことです。
Anthony: 社交辞令 means "courtesy words" or "greetings" that people use to get along with each other. Sometimes, it means "empty compliment" or "flattery" and can be used in a negative sense as well.
Anthony: Let’s take a look at today’s grammar.

Lesson focus

Naomi: 今日の文法は「~できるものなら」
Anthony: Today's grammar point is the expression of "[potential form of verb] + mono nara," which means, "if one can do something."
Naomi: 「なら」はconditional ですね。今日のレッスンでは特に、その後ろに 「~てみろ」が続くフレーズを勉強したいと思います。
Natsuko: verb plus てみるがつくと、try to do something. ところが、見ろなので、命令形 imperative formです。「~できるものなら~してみろ」というと、これはかなり挑戦的な表現ですね。
Anthony: The phrase is challenging the listener.
Natsuko: 話している人は絶対できないだろうと思っているのに、相手には、やってみろといってるわけですからね。ちょっと見下している感じですよね。
Naomi: そんなの無理だって僕は分かってるけど、やったら?っていう感じでしょうか。
Natsuko:性格悪そうですよね。
Anthony: Mono nara is the conjunction used to express a hypothetical situation that is unlikely to happen. So, this expression implies that the speaker doesn't believe or is not sure that something described in the sub clause of mono nara will happen. This expression is often followed by ~te miro, which is "[te-form of verb] + miro," the imperative form of ~ te miru, which means "try to do something." When ~mono nara is used with ~te miro, the whole sentence implies "I'm sure that you cannot do it" and sounds a bit challenging to the listener.
Naomi: では、形を練習しましょう。例えば、行く は to go ですが、potentialだと
Natsuko: 行ける
Naomi: モノナラ をつけると、
Natsuko: 行けるものなら
Anthony: If one can go...
Naomi: 更に、~てみろをつけると。
Natsuko: 行けるものなら、行ってみろ。
Anthony: Go if you can.
Naomi: 同じ動詞が後ろに続くんですよね、もうちょっと見てみましょう。誘う "to invite," "to ask someone out," "potential"は
Natsuko: 誘える
Naomi: モノナラ をつけると、
Natsuko: 誘えるものなら。
Anthony: If you think you can, ask her out.
Naomi: 今日のダイアログには?
Natsuko: あの優香ちゃんを誘えるもんなら、誘ってみろよ。
Anthony:If you think you can ask out Yuuka, go ahead and do it.
Naomi: 今日のこのフレーズは使える場面が結構、限られますよね。
Natsuko: そうですね。日常会話の、しかもかなりカジュアルな場面でしか使えないですね。

Outro

Natsuko: それではこの辺で。
Anthony: 次のレッスンで会いましょう。
