VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What's the first item we're looking at?
Tomoyuki: にて
Jessi: "at" "on" "in" "by"
Tomoyuki: 「にて」は「で」と同じ意味です。でも、「で」より「にて」のほうが丁寧(ていねい)です。
Jessi: The particle "にて" can replace the particle "で", which indicates the place an action takes place, the means for doing something, and so on.
Tomoyuki: 例えば、「駅の前で待っています」は、
Jessi: This means "I'll be waiting for you in front of the station."
Tomoyuki: これを「駅の前にて待っています」と言っても同じです。
Jessi: I see. It's just that にて sounds more formal, right?
Tomoyuki: そうです。
Jessi: OK.What's the next item we'll look at?
Tomoyuki: 心当たりがある
Jessi: "to have an idea" "ring a bell"
Tomoyuki: 「心当たり」というのは、「思い付くもの」とか「考え」という意味ですね。
Jessi: Right. The literal translation of "心当たり" would be "something that hits one's mind", but it is used to mean "idea" or "knowledge."
Tomoyuki: そうですね。例えば、「知っていますか?」とか「聞いたことがありますか?」という意味で、「心当たりがありますか?」と聞いたりします。
Jessi: The phrase "心当たりがある" is a common expression that means "to have an idea," "to be onto something" or "to ring a bell."
Tomoyuki: 反対の意味は「心当たりがない」。
Jessi: "心当たりがない" means "to not have an idea" or "to not know."
Tomoyuki: では、文法に入りましょう。
Jessi: On to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Jessi: The focus of this lesson is listening to an announcement at an amusement park.
In this grammar section, you'll review the usage of the honorific expression “〜ていらっしゃいます”.
Tomoyuki: In the dialogue, we have...「安藤ミサキさんという4歳の女の子が、お母さんを探していらっしゃいます」。
Jessi: "A four-year-old girl, Miss Misaki Andō, is looking for her mother"
Tomoyuki: この「探していらっしゃいます」が文法ポイントです。
「〜ていらっしゃいます」は「〜ています」の丁寧な言い方ですよね。
Jessi: That's right. Now, "いらっしゃる" is the honorific form of the verb iru, meaning "to exist".
And the ます form of "いらっしゃる" is "いらっしゃいます".
Let's show you with some examples. How do you say "Do you have any brothers or sisters?" or, "Do you have any siblings?"
Tomoyuki: ご兄弟がいますか?
Jessi: If you replace this います with いらっしゃいます and say
Tomoyuki: ご兄弟がいらっしゃいますか?
Jessi: the sentence becomes extra polite.
OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Tomoyuki."Do you have any siblings?"
Tomoyuki: ご兄弟がいらっしゃいますか?
Jessi: (wait for 10 sec.)Let's do one more. Tomoyuki, how do you say "Where are you?"
Tomoyuki: どこにいますか?
Jessi: OK. Listeners, rephrase this sentence in extra formal way using いらっしゃいます.
(wait for 10 sec) If you said...
Tomoyuki: どこにいらっしゃいますか?
Jessi: Then, you're right.
Tomoyuki: Now, you can apply this rule to "ています" sentence structure.
Jessi: Good point!
As you already know, the present progressive form or "-ing form" in Japanese is [て form of a verb]+いる. You can express the present progressive in an extra formal way by simply replacing iru with ”いらっしゃいます”.
Tomoyuki: For example, 社長が待っています。 means....
Jessi: "The company president is waiting for you."
Tomoyuki: If you said 社長が待っていらっしゃいます, it's even more formal.
Jessi: Did you notice how the ています was replaced with ていらっしゃいます?
OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Tomoyuki."The company president is waiting for you."
Tomoyuki: 社長が待っていらっしゃいます
Jessi: (wait for 10sec) OK.Great! Tomoyuki, can we hear a sentence from the dialogue?
Tomoyuki:「 安藤ミサキさんという4歳の女の子が、お母さんを探していらっしゃいます」
Jessi: "A four-year-old girl, Miss Misaki Andō, is looking for her mother" Let's break down this sentence.
Tomoyuki: 安藤ミサキさん(Jessi: Miss Misaki Andō)という(Jessi: called)4歳の女の子が(Jessi: 4year-old girl plus particle "が")、お母さんを(Jessi: Mother plus particle "を")探していらっしゃいます(Jessi: is looking for)。
Jessi: Can we hear the sentence once again?
Tomoyuki: 安藤ミサキさんという4歳の女の子が、お母さんを探していらっしゃいます。
Jessi: "A four year old girl called Miss Misaki Andō is looking for her mother." or "A four-year-old girl, Miss Misaki Andō, is looking for her mother"
Tomoyuki: はい。では、もう一度アナウンスを聞いてみましょう!
Jessi: Now let's listen to the announcement part and see how much you can understand now.
本日はご来場ありがとうございます。迷子のお知らせをいたします。
安藤ミサキさんという4歳の女の子が、お母さんを探していらっしゃいます。
案内所にて、お預かりしています。
心当たりがあるお客様は、係員にお知らせください。
Tomoyuki: どうでしたか? So how was it?
Jessi: We hope you understood everything this time.

Outro

Tomoyuki: 分からなかったら、レッスンノートを読んで復習してくださいね。
それでは、また次回!
Jessi: If there's anything you don't understand, be sure to read the lesson notes for this lesson or leave us a comment. See you all next time!
