| Jessi: Jessi here. Upper Beginner Season 1 lesson 5 “Listen Out for Japanese Earthquake Announcements”. So Tomoyuki, what are we going to learn in this lesson? |
| Tomoyuki: はい。今回は、謙譲語を勉強します。特に、動詞の謙譲の形を復習します。 |
| Jessi: In this lesson you'll learn how to make the humble form of a verb. |

| Jessi: A few moments ago, there was a magnitude three earthquake. |

| Jessi: It is estimated to have been a three on the Japanese earthquake scale. |

| Jessi: 地震があったんですね。 |
| Tomoyuki: はい。 |
| Jessi: So there was an earthquake. |
| Tomoyuki: はい。でも、震度3の地震ですね。そんなに大きくないです。Fortunately it wasn't that big. |
| Jessi: 震度って"seismic intensity"ですが、日本のシステムですよね？ |
| Tomoyuki: あ、そうなんですか？ |
| Jessi: あ、はい。 |
| Tomoyuki: アメリカだと使わないんですか？ |
| Jessi: Yeah, we only use magnitude in the States when talking about earthquakes. |
| Tomoyuki: へー。日本人は、震度のほうを気にしますね。I think in Japan we care more about the 震度 than the magnitude. |
| Jessi: 震度とマグニチュード、何が違うんですか？ |
| Tomoyuki: マグニチュードはその地震のエネルギーの大きさです。震度はどのくらい揺れたかですね。 |
| Jessi: あ、I see. so the magnitude tells you the overall size of the earthquake, whereas 震度 tells you how intense the earthquake was in a certain area. |
| Tomoyuki: ちなみに、ジェシーさんは出身がカリフォルニアですね？ |
| Jessi: あ、はい。そうです。That's right. I'm from California. |
| Tomoyuki: カリフォルニアも地震が多いですよね。 |

| Jessi: "on the occasion of", "when", "at the time of" |
| Tomoyuki: 「際」は「とき」とだいたい同じ意味です。でも、「時」より「際」の方がフォーマルです。 |
| Jessi: Though "sai" is very similar to "toki," "sai" has a much more formal connotation.例文お願いします。Sample sentence please. |
| Tomoyuki: 海外に行く際、パスポートを忘れないでください。 |
| Jessi: When you go abroad, don't forget your passport. これは「外国に行くとき、パスポートを忘れないでください」とも言えますね？ |
| Tomoyuki: はい。言えます。In this lesson's dialogue, we have 際でも. It's basically same as ときでも. |
| Jessi: So 際でも or ときでも mean "even when" "even at the time" Can we hear a sentence from the dialogue? |
| Tomoyuki: はい。地震の際でも安全です |
| Jessi: It's safe even in the event of an earthquake. |
| Tomoyuki: アナウンスやニュース、そして新聞では「際」をよく使いますが、普通の会話では「とき」のほうが自然です。 |
| Jessi: In a normal conversation, とき is more natural, so 際 should be reserved for extra formal situation. OK, on to this lesson's grammar. |

| Jessi: This literally means "I'll humbly borrow something." Sample sentence please. |
