| Jessi: In other places, please set them to silent mode, and refrain from talking on the phone. |

| Jessi: So the announcement is about 優先席 "priority seats" or "courtesy seats." |
| Tomoyuki: そうです。電車やバスには優先席がありますね。 |

| Tomoyuki: アメリカにもありますか？ |
| Jessi: Yes! Trains and buses in the US also have priority seating. |
| Tomoyuki: ああ、そうですか。本当は、優先席は必要ないほうがいいんですよね。 |
| Jessi: You think priority seats shouldn't be necessary??? |
| Tomoyuki: はい。優先席がなくても、お年寄りや体の不自由な人などに、譲ってあげる気持ちが大切だと思います。 |
| Jessi: Ah, I see what you mean. So it's important to give up one's seat to elderly people or disabled people regardless of whether it's a priority seat or not. なるほど。 |
| Tomoyuki: そうですね。あと「マナーモード」ですが、これは英語だと ”Silent mode” ですか？ “Manner mode” とは言わないですか？ |
| Jessi: ああ、いいポイントです。 “Manner mode”は言わないですね！We don't say "manner mode", instead it's called "silent mode", or "vibrate mode", depending on the setting. |

| Jessi: Right. ちなみに、"to set to silent mode" は「マナーモードにセットする」ですよね？ |

| Tomoyuki: 「妊娠」 は "pregnancy"、「中(ちゅう)」は "middle of" です。 |
| Jessi: Right. So 妊娠中 means "middle of pregnancy" or "in pregnancy." For example, 妊娠中の人 means, a person in pregnancy, or a pregnant person. |
| Tomoyuki: In the dialogue, the announcement said...“お年寄りや体の不自由なお客様、妊娠中のお客様に、席をお譲りください”. |
| Jessi: 席をお譲りください……might be a little tricky. |
| This basically means “席を譲ってください”, "Please give up one's seat (to someone else)". Let's break down this sentence. |
| Tomoyuki: お年寄りや(Jessi: elderly people and)、体の不自由な(Jessi: physically challenged )お客様(Jessi: customers or passengers)、妊娠中のお客様(Jessi: pregnant passengers) に(Jessi: to)、席をお譲りください。(Jessi: please give up one's seat) Can we hear the sentence again? |

| Tomoyuki: この「お控えください」が、ポイントです。 |
| Jessi: Right. This construction, "お＋[ ます stem of a verb ]＋ください" expresses an extra formal request. |
| Tomoyuki: Right. This is...[お] ＋ [控え] which is a ます form of a verb 控える (Jessi: meaning "to hold back," "to refrain from" or "to show restraint.") ＋ [ください]. |
| Jessi: So "お控えください" means "please hold back from" or "please refrain from". |
| And when "お控えください" follows a [Noun] ＋ particle "は(wa)", it's used to request customers to refrain from doing something. |
| Tomoyuki: Right. The formation is...”[Noun] はお控えください”. |
| Jessi: "Please refrain from [Noun]." Let's show you some examples. |
| Tomoyuki, how do you say "cigarette" or "tobacco"? |
| Tomoyuki: タバコ. |
| Jessi: To that, attach, はお控えください。 |
| Tomoyuki: タバコはお控えください。 |
| Jessi: Literally "Please refrain from cigarettes." In more natural English "Please refrain from smoking" OK. |

| Tomoyuki: Jessi, I think the word 喫煙 is used a lot too. |

| Tomoyuki: I mean...of course, “おタバコはお控えください” is used. But I think you'll also hear “喫煙はお控えください”. It sounds more formal. |
