INTRODUCTION
Tomoyuki: こんにちはトモユキです。
Jessi: Jessi here. Upper Beginner Season 1, Lesson 12, A Scenic Japanese Flight Over the International Date Line.
このレッスンでは何を勉強しますか。What are we going to learn in this lesson?
Tomoyuki: 尊敬語について勉強します。
Jessi: You'll learn how to use honorific language when talking about the actions of another person. This is known as 尊敬語. Where does this lesson's conversation take place?
Tomoyuki: 飛行機の中です。客室乗務員とお客さんが話しています。
Jessi: The conversation takes place on an airplane. A flight attendant and a passenger are talking.
Tomoyuki: 客室乗務員からアナウンスもあります。何と言っているのでしょうか。聞いてみましょう。
Jessi: You'll also hear an announcement from the flight attendant. Please listen to the dialogue and try to hear what is said.
DIALOGUE
Flight attendant: お呼びになりましたか。
Customer: ねえ、日付変更線はどこ?
Flight attendant: 日付変更線の場所……でございますか?
Customer: どこで、見えるの?
Flight attendant: 残念ながら、ご覧になれないと思います。
Customer: そっかー。今日天気悪いからね。
Flight attendant: ああ……。
(ポーン)
Announce: 皆様、間もなく着陸いたします。
もう一度、シートベルトをお確かめください。
(ポーン)
Announce: 皆様、ただ今着陸いたしました。
シートベルトのサインが消えるまで、お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。
ご搭乗ありがとうございました。
Jessi: Now listen to the dialogue once without sound effects.
Flight attendant: お呼びになりましたか。
Customer: ねえ、日付変更線はどこ?
Flight attendant: 日付変更線の場所……でございますか?
Customer: どこで、見えるの?
Flight attendant: 残念ながら、ご覧になれないと思います。
Customer: そっかー。今日天気悪いからね。
Flight attendant: ああ……。
Announce: 皆様、間もなく着陸いたします。
もう一度、シートベルトをお確かめください。
Announce: 皆様、ただ今着陸いたしました。
シートベルトのサインが消えるまで、お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。
ご搭乗ありがとうございました。
Jessi: Now listen to the dialogue with the English translation.
Flight attendant: お呼びになりましたか。
Jessi: Did you call?
Customer: ねえ、日付変更線はどこ?
Jessi: Hey, where's the International Date Line?
Flight attendant: 日付変更線の場所……でございますか?
Jessi: The...location of the International Date Line?
Customer: どこで、見えるの?
Jessi: Where can I see it?
Flight attendant: 残念ながら、ご覧になれないと思います。
Jessi: ...Unfortunately, I don't think you can see it...
Customer: そっかー。今日天気悪いからね。
Jessi: Is that so. Well, the weather is bad today...
Announce: 皆様、間もなく着陸いたします。
Jessi: Everyone, we will be touching down shortly.
Announce: もう一度、シートベルトをお確かめください。
Jessi: Please check your seatbelt once more.
Announce: 皆様、ただ今着陸いたしました。
Jessi: Everyone, we have just touched down.
Announce: シートベルトのサインが消えるまで、お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。
Jessi: Please stay seated and wait until the seatbelt sign is turned off.
Announce: ご搭乗ありがとうございました。
Jessi: Thank you very much for traveling with us.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Jessi: 着陸の案内をしていたんですね。So it was an announcement saying they were landing soon.
Tomoyuki: はい。このお客さんちょっと、変っていますね。
Jessi: ああ、You think this passenger is strange. そうですね。日付変更線の場所を聞いていますからね。
They're asking the location of International date line... which, of course, is an imaginary line. You can't actually see the international date line.
Tomoyuki: こういう会話を聞くと、サービス業をしている人って大変だな……と思います。いろいろなお客さんがいますから。
Jessi: Yeah. I agree. People who are involved in the service industry must feel stressed out sometimes since they have to deal with a lot of different types of people.
でも、先生も大変ですよね!Teachers are the same, right Tomoyuki?
Tomoyuki:(笑)そうですね。いろいろな生徒がいますから(笑)
You're right. There are many types of students. 大変ですけど、楽しいですよ。
Jessi: So it can be tough, but it's fun? そうかもしれないですね。じゃあ、単語に入りましょう。
On to the vocab.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson.最初はなんですか?What are we looking at first?
Tomoyuki: 残念ながら
Jessi: "unfortunately" Now, "残念" means "shame," "regret" or "disappointment", but what's ながら?
Tomoyuki: うーん。難しい言い方ですが、「けれど」とか「が」と同じ意味です。
英語だと、 "but" とか "although"ですね。
Jessi: なるほど。
Tomoyuki: So, 「残念ながら」means "it's shame but...", or "It's unfortunate, but..."
Jessi: It's usually said before giving some kind of bad news, or unfavorable information.
It's translated as "unfortunately...", "I'm afraid to say...", or "I'm sorry to say..." in English.
Tomoyuki: そっか。
Jessi: あ、You've just used the next expression we wanted to explain(笑).
Tomoyuki: Right. そっか. It's very casual though.
Jessi: そっか means "is that so".
Tomoyuki: The original form of そっか is そうですか。
Jessi: Right. “そっか” is a shortened form of "そうか" or "そうですか" and is used in informal conversation.
Tomoyuki: はい。ひとり言を言うときに、よく使いいますね。「あー、そっかそっか」like this.
Jessi:うん。Good point. Although it ends with the question particle か、it's not really a question. It's often used as something one says to oneself - a response is not really expected from the listener.
Tomoyuki: Right. では、文法を勉強しましょう。
Jessi: On to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Jessi: The focus of this lesson is listening to an in-flight announcement.
In this grammar section, you'll learn how to talk about another person's actions in a respectful manner.
Tomoyuki: 尊敬語を勉強します。You'll learn about honorific language, which is called 尊敬語.
Jessi: You'll learn how to make the honorific form of a verb, to be exact.
Tomoyuki: In this lesson's dialogue, the flight attendant said...
お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。
Jessi: "Please stay seated and wait"
Tomoyuki: この「お座りになる」が尊敬語ですよね。
Jessi: Right. The phrase “お座りになる” is an example of this 尊敬語.
Here's the formation for the honorific forms of class 1 and class 2 verbs. "[お] + [ます stem of a verb] +[になる or になります]"
Let's show you some examples. Tomoyuki, how do you say "to invite" or "to call for someone"?
Tomoyuki: はい。呼ぶ
Jessi: The ます form is?
Tomoyuki: 呼びます。
Jessi: Then, drop the ます to get ます stem.
Tomoyuki: 呼び
Jessi: Put the honorific prefix “お” in the front.
Toyumiyui: お呼び
Jessi: And then attach になる
Tomoyuki: お呼びになる
Jessi: This means "to invite" or "to call for someone" in a very polite speech.
Tomoyuki: In the dialogue, the flight attendant said....”お呼びになりましたか”.
Jessi: This means "Did you call for me?" OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Tomoyuki. "Did you call for me?"
Tomoyuki: お呼びになりましたか
Jessi: (Wait for 5 sec) OK! Now, please note that you cannot use 尊敬語 or honorific language to describe your own actions. It can only be used to describe another person's actions in a respectful manner.
Tomoyuki: はい。もう少し練習しましょうか。
Jessi: はい。How do you say "to sit"?
Tomoyuki: 座る
Jessi: The “ます” stem is?
Tomoyuki: 座り
Jessi: Put “お” in the front and “になる” to the end.
Tomoyuki: お座りになる
Jessi: Sample sentence please.
Tomoyuki: お座りになってください
Jessi: "Please have a seat." This is more polite than 座ってください right.
Tomoyuki: Right. In the dialogue, the flight attendant said…”お座席にお座りになってお待ちください”.
Jessi: "Please stay seated and wait". Let's break this sentence down.
Tomoyuki: お座席に(Jessi: seat plus particle に)お座りになって(Jessi: Please have a seat and)お待ちください。(Jessi: Please wait).
Jessi: Can we hear the sentence again?
Tomoyuki: お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。
Jessi: "Please stay seated and wait"
Tomoyuki: Actually the whole sentence would be …”シートベルトのサインが消えるまでお座席にお座りになってお待ちください”.
Jessi: Right. シートベルトのサイン is "seatbelt sign" and “消えるまで” is "until it's turned off"
Tomomyuki: So, シートベルトのサインが消えるまで、お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。It means...?
Jessi: "Until the seatbelt sign is turned off, please stay seated and wait for u." or "Please stay seated and wait until the seatbelt sign is turned off."
Tomoyuki: では、飛行機の中のアナウンスのパートだけをもう一度聞いてみましょう。
Jessi: Yes, Let's listen to the announcement part once again.
皆様、間もなく着陸いたします。
もう一度、シートベルトをお確かめください。
皆様、ただ今着陸いたしました。
シートベルトのサインが消えるまで、お座席にお座りになってお待ちください。
ご搭乗ありがとうございました。
Tomoyuki: このレッスンでは「尊敬語」を勉強しました。レッスンノートには「ご覧になる」という単語も紹介してあります。
Jessi: In this lesson, you learned about honorific language, 尊敬語, in this lesson. In the lesson notes there's a write up about the usage of the honorific verb, ご覧になる meaning "to look".
Tomoyuki: 必ず、読んでおいてくださいね。
Jessi: So be sure to check the lesson notes.

Outro

Tomoyuki: では、さようなら。
Jessi: See you next time!
