INTRODUCTION
Janet: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Japanese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Janet: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Have you been to Tokyo?”. In Japanese this is:
Kaori: 東京に行ったことがありますか。
(とうきょうにいったことがありますか。 Toukyou ni itta koto ga arimasu ka.)
Janet: The first word in the question is..
Kaori: 東京
(Toukyou)
Janet: which is “Tokyo” in English.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 東京
Janet: Listen again and repeat.
Kaori: 東京
{Pause}
Janet: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is...
Kaori: に
(ni)
Janet: place marking particle meaning something like “to”, “in” or “at”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) に
(ni)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: に
(ni)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 東京 に
(Toukyou ni)
{pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: 行った
(いった itta)
Janet: meaning “went”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 行った
(いった itta)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: 行った
(いった itta)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 東京 に 行った
(東京 に いった Toukyou ni itta)
{pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: こと
(koto)
Janet: meaning “thing”. When used with a past tense verb, it also gets the meaning of “experience”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) こと
(koto)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: こと
(koto)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 4 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 東京 に 行った こと
(東京 に いった こと Toukyou ni itta koto)
{pause}
Janet: And after that...
Kaori: が (ga)
Janet: The subject marker.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) が (ga)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: が (ga)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 5 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 東京 に 行った こと が
(東京 に いった こと が Toukyou ni itta koto ga)
{pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: あります (arimasu)
Janet: meaning “there is”, “there are”, “to exist”, “to own”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) あります (arimasu)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: あります (arimasu)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 6 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 東京 に 行った こと が あります
(東京 に いった こと が あります Toukyou ni itta koto ga arimasu)
{pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: か (ka)

Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) か(ka)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: か (ka)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kaori: 東京 に 行った こと が あります か。
(東京 に いった こと が あります か。 Toukyou ni itta koto ga arimasu ka.)
{pause}
Janet: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Have you been to Tokyo?".
Kaori: はい、2回行きました。
(はい、2かいいきました。 Hai, nikai ikimashita.)
Janet: "Yes, I've been there twice”. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kaori: (Slow) はい、2回行きました。
(はい、2かいいきました。 Hai, nikai ikimashita.)
{pause}
Janet: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kaori: はい
(hai)
Janet: means "yes".
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) はい(hai)
Janet: Now repeat
Kaori: はい(hai)
{Pause}
Janet: And after that
Kaori: 2回
(2かい nikai)
Janet: meaning “twice”. The word
Kaori: 回
Janet: is the counter for the number of times.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 2回
(2かい nikai)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: 2回
(2かい nikai)
{Pause}
Janet: And after that
Kaori: 行きました
(いきました ikimashita)
Janet: meaning “went”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 行きました
(いきました ikimashita)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: 行きました
(いきました ikimashita)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the speaker say, “Yes, I've been there twice”, and then repeat.
Kaori: はい、2回行きました。
(はい、2かいいきました。 Hai, nikai ikimashita.)
{pause}
Janet: To expand on the pattern, replace “twice” with “once”.
Kaori: 1回
(1かい ikkai)
Janet: once
Kaori: (slow) 1回
(1かい ikkai) (regular) 1回
(1かい ikkai)
Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “once”
Kaori: はい、1回行きました。
(はい、1かいいきました。 Hai, ikkai ikimashita.)
Janet: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “twice” with “once”. Say “Yes, I've been there once.”
{pause}
Kaori: はい、1回行きました。
(はい、1かいいきました。 Hai, ikkai ikimashita.)
Janet: To use a different phrase, replace “once” with “5 times”.
Kaori: 5回
(5かい gokai)
Janet: 5 times
Kaori: (slow) 5回
(5かい gokai) (regular) 5回
(5かい gokai)
Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “5 times”.
Kaori: はい、5回行きました。
(はい、5かいいきました。 Hai, gokai ikimashita.)
Janet: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “once” with “5 times”. Say “Yes, I've been there 5 times”.
{pause}
Kaori: はい、5回行きました。
(はい、5かいいきました。 Hai, gokai ikimashita.)
Janet: To use a different phrase, replace “5 times” with “10 times”.
Kaori: 十回
Janet: ten times
Kaori: (slow) 十回
(regular) 十回
Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “ten times”.
Kaori: はい、十回行きました。
Janet: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “5 times” with “10 times”. Say “Yes, I've been there 10 times”.
{pause}
Kaori: はい、十回行きました。
Janet: To say "no", in a simple way, just say:
Kaori: いいえ、ありません。
(Iie, arimasen.)
Janet: Which is like saying “No, I haven't” in English. Let's hear it slowly.
Kaori: (Slowly) いいえ、ありません。
(Iie, arimasen.)
Janet: And one more time at normal speed:
Kaori: いいえ、ありません。
(Iie, arimasen.)
QUIZ
Janet: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you are visiting Japan and someone asks you “Have you been to Tokyo?” You want to answer “Yes, I've been there twice”. Respond to the question.
Kaori: 東京に行ったことがありますか。
(とうきょうにいったことがありますか。 Toukyou ni itta koto ga arimasu ka.)

(5 seconds)
Kaori: 東京に行ったことがありますか。
(とうきょうにいったことがありますか。 Toukyou ni itta koto ga arimasu ka.)
{pause}
Janet: Now it's time to answer the question with actual information about yourself.

Seth san,

こんにちは。:smile:

Thank you for your reply.

I see.

However, I don’t know about how to receive Japanese citizenship…

You should go to a website related to immigration.

Hi Yuki. I am sorry that I didn't respond quick enough. You had wrote to me on July 25, 2015. I had said about a Japanese citizenship. And, yes. I love Japan very much enough that I want to be a citizenship. From America to Japan. Your country is awesome

Looks like the romaji for animal hospital is missing word. The kanji looks OK to my untrained eye.
