INTRODUCTION
Janet: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Japanese learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.

Lesson focus

Janet: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “Do you have any brothers and sisters?” In Japanese this is
Kaori: 兄弟はいますか。
(きょうだい は います か。 Kyoudai wa imasu ka.)
Janet: The first word in the question is
Kaori: 兄弟 (きょうだい kyoudai)
Janet: meaning ‘siblings’ in English.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 兄弟 (きょうだい kyoudai)
Janet: Listen again and repeat.
Kaori: 兄弟 (きょうだい kyoudai)
{Pause}
Janet: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kaori: は (wa)
Janet: the topic marking particle.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) は (wa)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: は (wa)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 兄弟 は (きょうだい は kyoudai wa)
{pause}
Janet: And after that
Kaori: います (imasu)
Janet: meaning “there is”, ,“to exist”, “to have”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) います (imasu)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: います (imasu)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the the first 3 words of the question and repeat.
Kaori: 兄弟 は います (きょうだい は います kyoudai wa imasu)
{pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: か (ka)
Janet: this is the question marker.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) か (ka)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: か (ka)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Kaori: 兄弟 は います か。
(きょうだい は います か。 Kyoudai wa imasu ka.)
{pause}
Janet: (You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies.) Master the following pattern and responses to the question Do you have any brothers and sisters??
Kaori: 妹がいます。 (いもうとがいます。 Imouto ga imasu.)
Janet: "I have a younger sister.” Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Kaori: (Slow) 妹がいます。
(いもうとがいます。 Imouto ga imasu.)
{pause}
Janet: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kaori: 妹
(いもうと imouto)
Janet: means “younger sister.”
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) 妹 (いもうと imouto)
Janet: Now repeat
Kaori: 妹 (いもうと imouto)
{Pause}
Janet: And next
Kaori: が (ga)
Janet: meaning subject marker.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) が (ga)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: が (ga)
{Pause}
Janet: And after that
Kaori: います (imasu)
Janet: meaning “there is”, “to exist”, “to have”.
Kaori: (Slow, by syllable) います (imasu)
Janet: Now repeat.
Kaori: います (imasu)
{Pause}
Janet: Listen to the speaker say, “I have a younger sister.”, and then repeat.
Kaori: 妹がいます。
(いもうとがいます。 Imouto ga imasu.)
{pause}
Janet: To expand on the pattern, replace “younger sister” with “older brother”.
Kaori: 兄 (あに ani)
Janet: older brother
Kaori: (slow) 兄(あに ani)
Kaori: (regular) 兄 (あに ani)
Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “older brother”
Kaori: 兄がいます。 (あにがいます。 Ani ga imasu.)
Janet: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “younger sister” with “older brother”. Say “I have an older brother”.
{pause}
Kaori: 兄がいます。 (あにがいます。 Ani ga imasu.)
Janet: To expand on the pattern, replace “older brother” with “older sister”.

Janet: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “older sister”
