In this lesson, you'll learn how to discuss ability and skills in Japanese through a quick conversation.
Let's look at the dialogue.
わあ！ はるとくんは､りょうりするのが じょうずですね｡
Wā! Haruto-kun wa ryōri suru no ga jōzu desu ne.
ありがとうございます｡ とくに 魚を りょうりするのが とくいです｡
Arigatō gozaimasu. Toku ni sakana o ryōri suru no ga tokui desu.
ほんとうですか｡ わたしは 魚を きるのが にがてです｡
Hontō desu ka. Watashi wa sakana o kiru no ga nigate desu.
ぼくは つりが すきです｡ だから､ うろこを とるのも とくいですよ｡
Boku wa tsuri ga suki desu. Dakara, uroko o toru no mo tokui desu yo.
へぇー､すごい！ レストランで バイトが できますよ｡ わたしの おいは シェフです｡ こんど､ しょうかいします｡
Hē, sugoi! Resutoran de baito ga dekimasu yo. Watashi no oi wa shefu desu. Kondo, shōkai shimasu.
ほんとうですか｡ ありがとうございます！
Hontō desu ka. Arigatō gozaimasu!
Let's break it down.
わあ！ はるとくんは､りょうりするのが じょうずですね｡
Wā! Haruto-kun wa ryōri suru no ga jōzu desu ne.
"Wow! Haruto, you’re really good at cooking."
ありがとうございます｡ とくに 魚を りょうりするのが とくいです｡
Arigatō gozaimasu. Toku ni sakana o ryōri suru no ga tokui desu.
"Thank you very much. I'm especially good at cooking fish."
This second sentence is our focus for the lesson.
This starts with the noun, 魚 (sakana), meaning "fish." 魚 (slow version - breakdown by syllable). さかな.
Next is the particle, を (o), which is the object-marking particle. を.
After this is the verb phrase, りょうりする (ryōri suru), meaning "to cook." りょうりする (slow version - breakdown by syllable). りょうりする.
Next is the particle, の (no), which is the nominalizing particle. の.
Following this is the particle, が (ga), which is the subject-marking particle. が.
Next is the adjective phrase, とくいです (tokui desu), meaning "am good at." とくいです (slow version - breakdown by syllable). とくいです.
All together, it's 魚を りょうりするのが とくいです｡ (Toku ni sakana o ryōri suru no ga tokui desu). "I am good at cooking fish." 魚を りょうりするのが とくいです｡
ほんとうですか｡ わたしは 魚を きるのが にがてです｡
Hontō desu ka. Watashi wa sakana o kiru no ga nigate desu.
"Really? I'm not good at cutting fish."
ぼくは つりが すきです｡ だから､ うろこを とるのも とくいですよ｡
Boku wa tsuri ga suki desu. Dakara, uroko o toru no mo tokui desu yo.
"I like fishing. So, I'm also good at removing fish scales."
へぇー､すごい！ レストランで バイトが できますよ｡ わたしの おいは シェフです｡ こんど､ しょうかいします｡
Hē, sugoi! Resutoran de baito ga dekimasu yo. Watashi no oi wa shefu desu. Kondo, shōkai shimasu.
"Wow, amazing! You can work part-time at a restaurant. My nephew is a chef. I'll introduce you next time."

"Really? Thank you so much!"
