In this lesson, you'll learn how to express opinions about past experience in Japanese through a quick conversation.
Let's look at the dialogue.
あ～､きょうとりょこう､たのしかったです｡ おばあちゃん､ありがとう｡
Ā, Kyōto ryokō, tanoshikatta desu. Obāchan, arigatō.
いえいえ｡ 何が いちばん よかったですか｡
Ie ie. Nani ga ichi-ban yokatta desu ka.
さくらが いちばん よかったです｡ おばあちゃんは？
Sakura ga ichi-ban yokatta desu. Obāchan wa?
おてらの しょうじんりょうりが さいこうでしたよ｡
O-tera no shōjin ryōri ga saikō deshita yo.
え､そうですか？ちょっと あじが うすかったですよ｡ それに､りょうも すくなかったです｡
E, sō desu ka? Chotto aji ga usukatta desu yo. Sore ni ryō mo sukunakatta desu.
めぐみさんは 大ぐいですからね｡
Megumi-san wa ōgui desu kara ne.
おばあちゃん､ ひどい！
Obāchan, hidoi!
Let's break it down.
あ～､きょうとりょこう､たのしかったです｡ おばあちゃん､ありがとう｡
Ā, Kyōto ryokō, tanoshikatta desu. Obāchan, arigatō.
"Ah, the Kyoto trip was fun. Grandma, thank you."
いえいえ｡ 何が いちばん よかったですか｡
Ie ie. Nani ga ichi-ban yokatta desu ka.
"No, no. What was the best part?"
さくらが いちばん よかったです｡
This is the focus of the lesson.
First is the word, さくら (sakura), meaning "cherry blossoms."
さくら (slow version – breakdown by syllable). さ・く・ら.
Next is が, the subject-marking particle.
が (slow version – breakdown by syllable). が.
After this is the word, いちばん (ichiban), meaning "the most" or "number one."
いちばん (slow version – breakdown by syllable). い・ち・ば・ん.
Next is the word, よかった (yokatta), meaning "was good."
よかった (slow version – breakdown by syllable). よ・かっ・た.
The dictionary form of よかった is よい (yoi), or "good."
This is in the past tense, so よい becomes よかった, or "was good."
Last is です (desu), the polite ending particle.
です (slow version – breakdown by syllable). で・す.
All together, it's さくらが いちばん よかったです｡ (sakura ga ichiban yokatta desu.)
This translates as "The cherry blossoms were the best."
おばあちゃんは？
Obāchan wa?
"What about you, Grandma?"
おてらの しょうじんりょうりが さいこうでしたよ｡
O-tera no shōjin ryōri ga saikō deshita yo.
"The temple's vegetarian cuisine was the best."
え､そうですか？ちょっと あじが うすかったですよ｡ それに､りょうも すくなかったです｡
E, sō desu ka? Chotto aji ga usukatta desu yo. Sore ni ryō mo sukunakatta desu.
"Eh, really? The flavor was a bit weak. Also, the portion was small."
めぐみさんは 大ぐいですからね｡
Megumi-san wa ōgui desu kara ne.
"Megumi, you eat a lot."
おばあちゃん､ ひどい！
Obāchan, hidoi!
"Grandma, that’s mean!"
