Hi, everybody! In this lesson, you'll learn some important phrases for Christmas in Japan and some valuable cultural tips.
In Japanese, Christmas is called...
クリスマス
[slowly] クリスマス
In Japan, Christmas is a major holiday event, but without the religious associations. This day is about spreading happiness and is celebrated like in the West by decorating streets and Christmas trees. Children are especially excited to receive gifts from Santa Claus.
On クリスマス, or "Christmas Day," Japanese people greet each other by saying メリー・クリスマス!
(slow) メリー・クリスマス!
It means "Merry Christmas!"
When you meet someone on Christmas day, be sure to greet them with this phrase.
Japanese people celebrate the holiday with their own special events and customs. The most popular food to eat on Christmas is...
フライドチキン
(slow) フライドチキン
It means "Fried chicken."
Fried chicken, especially KFC, became popular Christmas food in the 70s.
Fast food restaurants are very busy on Christmas, and many people order their chicken ahead of time.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.

Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact! How did Christmas become popular in Japan?
Celebrating Christmas started in the Meiji era, in the late 19th century. 明治屋 (Meiji-Ya) was a food import company that held one of the first Christmas sales in Japan. The sale was so successful that with each passing year, celebrating Christmas became more and more popular. Today, it is one of the most fun occasions for the Japanese.
You just learned about how Japanese people celebrate Christmas and some important facts about the holiday.
