Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody! I’m Risa from JapanesePod101.com.
Do you know how to say “Thank you” in Japanese? In this lesson, you'll learn three different ways to say "thank you" and how to respond.
Let’s start with the easiest one.
ありがとう。
[slowly] ありがとう。
This means “thank you.”
If you want to be more formal, there is a different phrase you should use.
どうもありがとうございます。
[slowly] どうもありがとうございます。
It means “thank you very much.”
To show you deeply appreciate someone or something, make sure to bow a bit or smile. That's the best way to show the highest level of gratitude.
To sound like a pro, you can add why you're thankful. For example, 来ていただいて、どうもありがとうございます。
“Thank you very much for coming.”
What about between friends? Here's how to say it.
どうも。
[slowly] どうも。
It means “Thank you.”
Now you know 3 different ways say "thank you" in Japanese! But how do you respond if someone thanks you?
If someone thanks you in Japanese, simply say いいえ、いいえ。It means "Not at all."
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what we've learned. Listen to the expression and repeat after me.
“Thank you.”

Don't be surprised if an older person uses informal language toward you, even if you don't know each other. Age plays a big role in Japan, so sometimes older people will use the informal version of "thank you" to show their appreciation.
You just learned how to say “thank you” in three different ways and how to respond in Japanese.
And, if you really want to become fluent and speak Japanese from the very first lesson, go to JapanesePod101.com.
I’ll see you next time. またね!
