It happened at my workplace several years ago.
At the time, problems plagued the company;
unthinkable mistakes with orders, frequent accidents at the factory, and an overwhelming number of complaints.
Those days were mostly spent apologizing on the phone from the time we arrived in the morning until we finished late at night.
Of course, not only I, but my coworkers were all overcome with stress.
On that day, just like most others during that period, it was nearing three in the morning when we locked the office door.
There were five of us: Chief Oshima, Chief Nakajima, two co-workers, and me.
Everyone was silent, their faces pale with exhaustion.
The elevator wouldn't come no matter how many times we pushed the button.
We didn't know this at the time, but a clerical error by the building management had resulted in our office not being notified that the elevator would be receiving maintenance that particular night, requiring the power to be shut off.
My coworkers and I snapped.
Hey, open up!! What's going on?! "What's the deal!? Come on!!" "Quit playing around, enough of this, okay...?!"
It ended with some of my coworkers, including Yamazaki, sitting in defeat on the hallway floor.
We have no choice. Let's take the emergency stairway,
A stairwell was installed in the building as a means of escape during a fire, and in order to prevent intruders it was kept locked from the inside. The lock was rarely opened.
It was the first time I had opened the door connecting to the emergency stairway.
The door was at the end of the hall in a spot where the fluorescent lighting barely reached.
No matter how closely spaced a building is to another, every building has a space similar to a "blind spot" that can't be seen from the main road.
Those nooks, usually between the walls of two buildings, barely see sunlight even during the day, and are beyond the reach of artificial lighting. Those spots serve as nesting grounds for pigeons and crows.
Our office is on the seventh floor.
Nakabayashi: Oh!
As soon as the door opened,
an indescribably foul stench flooded the hall and hung low.
It's pigeon poop,
The back of the building was covered in bird excrement.
Forgetting my fear of the dark, I started to descend the steel stairway.
It was too dark to see where I was walking, and the handrail was only the height of my waist.
I turned around to look at my coworkers; they all had gloom written on their faces.
I was in the front of the group.
Behind me were Kato, Yamazaki, Chief Oshima, and Chief Nakajima, in that order.
It was when we passed the landing on the sixth floor
that I suddenly heard a whispering voice coming from behind me.
I thought someone was having a conversation, but the strange thing was that it didn't seem like anyone was responding.
I knew that voice. It wasn't either of the Chiefs, nor of Yamazaki.
I couldn't remember whose voice it was.
One thing was certain, however; the owner of that voice was someone you would not enjoy meeting at three in the morning on the emergency stairway.
My heart started pounding faster.
I looked back only once.
Behind me Kato was a blank look on his face,
and behind her, Yamazaki.
It was too dark to see Chiefs Oshima and Chief Nakajima.
Chief Oshima? said Masaru.
What? Who have you been talking to this whole time? replied Chief Nakajima.
Chief Oshima doesn't understand the seriousness of the situation. I shouldn't reply. I shouldn't even turn around. I strongly felt this was the right thing to do.
I clearly heard Kato, who was restless with anxiety, clanging something against the handrail.
However, it didn't seem to me as if he was feeling the same paralyzing fear that I was.
Everything that reached my ears was exactly what I didn't want to hear at that moment.
Hey, Yamazaki! You too, Chief Nakajima, and you too, Nakabayashi. Wait...
I am Nakabayashi.
But I shouldn't turn around. I shouldn't turn around!
Behind me, I could hear Kato and Yamazaki discussing something.
I concentrated on descending the stairway.
I was visibly shaking to the point that I could not hide it.
We passed the third floor, and below I could barely see the ground covered in complete darkness.
I quickened my pace. And that's when I felt something rush up very close behind me.
Nakabayashi: Uh...
I stifled a scream as best I could, and continued to descend the stairway.
The bottom of the stairs was an area surrounded by a steel cage that had a simple lock on it to allow for the garbage disposal.
Something was still right behind me.
And in the pitch black of the landing, I relied on the sense of my fingers to open the lock, while doing my best not to turn around.
Then, it happened.
Suuuu
Oy, Nakabayashi! I have something for you.
This is fun, Nakabayashi, isn't it?!
Nakabayashi, Nakabayashi, Nakabayashi...
Mwahaha, heeeey, c'mon, come on!
C'mon, I won't do anything...turn around!!
I could no longer contain my scream.
They tried to get me to turn around using sickeningly bright voices.
Nakabayashi: Ahhhhh...
Before I knew it, I had opened the door.
I didn't feel relief, but rather the crawling feeling of gooseflesh covering my skin. I can finally get out!
I stuck my hand out in the darkness and pushed on the steel gate.
Once I pass through, I'll only be a few meters from the main road.
I took one step forward. And then....
