Becky: Okay listeners, what’s your new year’s language learning resolution?
Peter: And how will you make sure you succeed? Let us know in the comments!
Becky: A lot of people fall short... don’t they, Peter?
Peter: They do, Becky. Even I came close to failing my 2014 resolution of learning Italian.
Becky: So what happened? Did you achieve it?
Peter: Becky, I smashed through my resolution. Last year, I set a goal to speak a full 30 minutes of pure Italian conversation. And I FINALLY reached it in mid December. Becky, want to know how I did it?
Becky: Definitely! Listeners, pay attention, because this is a GREAT lesson.
Peter: So, a few simple changes to my goal made a massive difference.
Becky: What kinds of changes?
Peter: Most people typically aim for a vague resolution like “This year, I’ll master Italian.” So I started aiming for smaller, more measurable goals, with deadlines. In my case, it was to “Speak 30 Minutes of Italian conversation by December 31st”
Becky: That definitely sounds more manageable. After all, you can’t expect to magically become fluent. You put a number on it.
Peter: Exactly. No magic here, Becky. Then, I started setting smaller, monthly goals that would add up to 30 minutes by the end of the year.
Becky: How did that work?
Peter: Well, for January 2014, my goal was to hit 3 minutes by January 31st, 2014. I reached that. For February, I aimed higher - 5 minutes. By July 31st, I was at around 20 minutes.
Becky: And now you’re at 30 minutes! That means you can have normal conversations in Italian with no problems, right?
Peter: Pretty much! And I’m blown away at how easy it was once I changed my mindset.
Becky: Are there any other effective learning tips you can give to our learners out there for 2015?
Peter: You should write down your small, measurable goal, set a deadline, and place it somewhere you’ll see it every day. It sounds a little strange, but it keeps you focused.
Becky: And that doesn’t just apply to language learning, but any goal you’re trying to achieve in life!
Peter: It really works, Becky. So, listeners, take these tips and apply them right now..
Becky: And once you do that, we challenge you to master a language in 2015.
Peter: Start your New Year’s resolution today and join our 12-month challenge!

I found out about japanesepod from Risa-san on youtube and also the podcasts on Audible and finally decided to upgrade to premium with this sale. I'm also attending Japanese language class at college this semester so I hope to finally achieve my learning goals! This month I want to learn all of the hiragana and katakana. After that I will learn 20 kanji each month and maybe increase to 50 each month if I'm able to memorize them easily. By the end of the year I hope to increase my listening comprehension enough so I can understand Japanese shows without relying too much on subtitles. Next year I will continue my Japanese classes at school and using japanesepod! :sunglasses:

I have set myself a couple of objectives for 2015. First, learn Kanji properly. I have played around with this for a few years and frankly never really got anywhere. I now have a book with 1945 Kanji and my objective is to know them all by December 31, 2015. It is basically 2 pages of the book per day or somewhere between 6 and 8 Kanji a day. Arguably the objective is not stretchy enough because I have read it is possible to learn 2,000 Kanji in three months but I have rationalised that I have other things to do. Certainly it is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time bound.

My second objective is to thoroughly learn a new verb a day with at least one sentence formation as well as an adjoining sentence. My definition of thoroughly is all tenses and all levels (affirmative, negative, plain, masu, honorific, humble, etc.). My time frame is by the end of year party and my measure of success will be how well I can hold a Japanese conversation with my friends and colleagues without reverting to English. Right now if I can get past two sentences I'm doing well.

And I'll advertise my results (good or bad) at the end of the year.
