POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Naomi Sensei, do you eat Indian often?
Naomi: Yeah sometimes. 時々食べます。
Eric: 何を注文しますか? What do you have?
Naomi: うーん。わかりませんけど… I don’t know. It really depends but I like Lassi and Naan
Eric: Naan, that’s pretty good.
Naomi: それからチキンカレーも美味しいですよね。 Chicken curry is also good too.
Eric: Chicken is 鶏肉 right?
Naomi: はい。
Eric: But you just said chicken curry.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: Explain. What is that? I mean you could have just said 鶏肉カレー right?
Naomi: We never say 鶏肉カレー I don’t know but chicken curry is what we usually say because chicken sounds more fashionable than 鶏肉。
Eric: More fashionable.
Naomi: Yeah.
Eric: So I guess it is like trends in words and all that.
Naomi: そうだと思います。 I think so.
Eric: It was probably once a day when 鶏肉カレー was in fashion. Those days are long gone but pork curry is also pork curry right?
Naomi: はい。
Eric: Not 豚肉カレー. Blasted trends
Naomi: では、単語に入っていきましょう。
Eric: On to the vocabulary.
VOCAB LIST
Eric: The first word is
Naomi: 注文
Eric: Order
Naomi: (slow)ちゅうもん (natural speed) 注文
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 飲み物
Eric: Drink, beverage.
Naomi: (slow)のみもの (natural speed) 飲み物
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 紅茶
Eric: Black tea
Naomi: (slow)こうちゃ (natural speed) 紅茶
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: お客様
Eric: Customer
Naomi: (slow)おきゃくさま (natural speed) お客様
Eric: The last word is
Naomi: エビ
Eric: Shrimp, prawn, lobster.
Naomi: (slow)エビ (natural speed) エビ
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: Okay so let’s take a look at these words. What do we have first?
Naomi: エビ
Eric: Shrimp, prawn or lobster.
Naomi: そうですね。 Shrimp, prawn and lobster are all エビ in Japanese.
Eric: It’s the same as alligator right?
Naomi: ワニね。
Eric: ワニ。 Alligator and crocodile, same thing ワニ but this is spelled in katakana right in this dialogue.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: But as far as I know, it’s a native word in Japanese, isn’t it?
Naomi: はい、そうです。 Right. The name of animals, fast flowers are often written in katakana.
Eric: But it does have kanji along with you know most other animals or fish or flowers that you’d see in katakana.
Naomi: そうですね。エビ is spelled in katakana, kanji or hiragana.
Eric: So what’s the next word?
Naomi: 注文
Eric: An order. And when you put する or をする after 注文, it becomes a verb, to order.
Naomi: 注文する or 注文をする
Eric: And in the dialogue, the 店員, the waiter or the waitress said, ご注文. This ご is an honorific prefix. Again you can’t put the ご in front of your own order. You know, that would be respecting yourself too much.
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: Right. Naomi Sensei, what was that line from the dialogue?
Naomi: ご注文は?
Eric: What would you like to order? Literally, your honorable order is …Right, pay attention to the fact that the 店員, the waiter or the waitress doesn’t even finish the sentence. Okay Naomi Sensei, can you complete the sentence?
Naomi: ご注文は何ですか?
Eric: What’s your order 何ですか what is it? It’s inferred right. I mean, usually don’t have to say it and this type of sentence pattern is really common in formal speech right?
Naomi: そうですね。 That’s correct. For example, お名前は何ですか?
Eric: What’s your name? When you are asking someone, it usually gets whittled down to
Naomi: お名前は?
Eric: What’s the phone number? What’s your phone number?
Naomi: 電話番号は何ですか?That will be 電話番号は?
Eric: All right. Let’s look at the grammar.

Lesson focus

Eric: Okay in this lesson, we will learn how to ask someone’s preference between two choices using the question どちらがいいですか? Which one would you like? Okay sample sentence please.
Naomi: ナンとライス、どちらがいいですか?
Eric: Would you like naan or rice and to make this construction, we first present two choices with ど meaning and in between them and then ask, which is good with
Naomi: どちらがいいですか?
Eric: Okay so one more time Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: ナンとライス
Eric: Naan or rice.
Naomi: どちらがいいですか?
Eric: Which one is better or which one would you like?
Naomi: ナンとライス、どちらがいいですか?
Eric: Which would you like naan or rice? So how do you say which would you like coffee or tea?
Naomi: Coffee is コーヒー. Tea is 紅茶. So コーヒーと紅茶、どちらがいいですか?
Eric: Meat or fish, which one?
Naomi: Meat is 肉. Fish is 魚. So 肉と魚、どちらがいいですか?
Eric: All right. Time to practice. You are out at restaurant and the waiter came to your table to take an order. What would you like to order?
Naomi: ご注文は?
Eric: All right. You decided to have a lunch set.
Naomi: ランチセット、お願いします。
Eric: And the set has many choices. At first he asks, would you like soup or salad?
Naomi: スープとサラダ、どちらがいいですか?
Eric: So which one?
Naomi: Soup スープ、お願いします or if you’d like salad, サラダ、お願いします。
Eric: So what about your drink, coffee or tea?
Naomi: コーヒーと紅茶、どちらがいいですか?
Eric: Which one?
Naomi: コーヒー、お願いします。 And of course, if you’d like tea, 紅茶、お願いします。
Eric: All right. Time for dessert. Cake or ice cream?
Naomi: ケーキーとアイスクリーム、どちらがいいですか? Please let us know.

Hi Bree,

That's a good question. If there's a third choice, you can say:

どれがいいですか。

Also is there a difference between 「どちらがいいですか」 and 「どちらのほうがいいですか」?

>> I'd say they mean the same. But let's assume you ask this question to someone and the person's answer is どちらでもいいです. You really want to know which one the person prefers and you insist the person to tell you. In this case, if you ask [どちらのほうがいいですか。], then the person should give you a specific answer. Does this make sense?

Sincerely,

Miki H

What if there were three options to choose from? Would you still be able to say 「どちらがいいですか」 or is there a different way to ask? Also is there a difference between 「どちらがいいですか」 and 「どちらのほうがいいですか」? Thank you! :)
