POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: So this is it. That’s it. Ryu and Shizuka are on a date.
Naomi: ね~、どうしたんでしょうね。(Nē, dō shita n deshō ne.) Ryu is Lori’s boyfriend and Shizuka is Lori’s friend.
Eric: Wow! That’s hot.
Naomi: By the way Eric, カレー (karē) is your staple food, right?
Eric: Yeah, it’s a well known fact that I go to the カレー屋 (karēya) after our weekly recording.
Naomi: そうそうそう。(Sō sō sō.) But I don’t think Ryu and Shizuka are going to CoCo 壱番屋 (Koko Ichi-ban’ya) curry shop?
Eric: No, no, no.
Naomi: They are going to an authentic Indian restaurant.
Eric: Yeah and I have a feeling that you know, real authentic Indians won’t – probably won’t like CoCo 壱番 (Koko Ichi-ban) too much.
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.)
Eric: Because CoCo 壱番 (Koko Ichi-ban) is the typical Japanese curry rice shop, right? I have actually gone to eat there with Indian people and they have been complaining like hey, this is not curry at all.
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.)
Eric: Which I totally believe. It’s not at all like Indian curry. You know, but there is a nice homespun quality about CoCo 壱番 (Koko Ichi-ban) that I like even though it’s not authentic at all in terms of Indian real curry.
Naomi: It’s like more Japanese adapted curry.
Eric: Japanese tend to adapt things to their taste but hey, it works out right but on to the vocabulary.
Naomi: 次は単語です。(Tsugi wa tango desu.)
VOCAB LIST
Eric: The first word is
Naomi: 遅れる (okureru)
Eric: To be late.
Naomi: (slow) おくれる (okureru) (natural speed) 遅れる (okureru)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: さっき (sakki)
Eric: A little while ago.
Naomi: (slow) さっき (sakki) (natural speed) さっき (sakki)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 料理 (ryōri)
Eric: Cooking, cuisine.
Naomi: (slow) りょうり (ryōri) (natural speed) 料理 (ryōri)
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: タバコ (tabako)
Eric: Cigarettes, tobacco.
Naomi: (slow) タバコ (tabako) (natural speed) タバコ (tabako)
Eric: The last word is
Naomi: 何名 (nan-mei)
Eric: How many people?
Naomi: (slow) なんめい (nan-mei) (natural speed) 何名 (nan-mei)
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: Naomi-sensei,
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Eric: I am hungry.
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Eric: Let’s talk about food.
Naomi: 料理 (ryōri)
Eric: Cooking, cuisine.
Naomi: I think the pronunciation is quite difficult.
Eric: Ah you mean the double Rs and plus that ryo at the beginning?
Naomi: Yeah, especially ryo at the beginning, りょ (ryo).
Eric: Yeah that is a difficult concept to grasp, right? I mean if you are reading the romaji version of these words like 料理 (ryōri) you might get the wrong impression on how to pronounce these words. But you know, we explained this in detail in the bonus episode in December 2008. So listeners, if you go back to that episode, check it out and it’s pretty thorough I think and I gave tips on how to practice the R sounds, らりるれろ (ra ri ru re ro). Just check it out. What’s the next word?
Naomi: タバコ (tabako)
Eric: Right cigarettes or just tobacco, right? In the dialogue, the host of the restaurant said
Naomi: おタバコ (o-tabako)
Eric: With the honorific prefix お (o).
Naomi: I think we’ve mentioned it before but you can’t put お (o) in front of your item.
Eric: You mean something that you physically own, right? You can’t honor your own things.
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.)
Eric: That’s arrogant.
Naomi: So you can’t say 私のおタバコ (watashi no o-tabako) but I think you will hear おタバコ (o-tabako) at shops or restaurant quite often.
Eric: But not usually with your friends, right?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Eric: You don’t ask your friends if they have おタバコ (o-tabako) to spare you, right?
Naomi: Yeah, because it’s too polite.
Eric: What else do we have?
Naomi: 名 (mei)
Eric: A counter for people. The usage of this counter is explained in detail in the bonus track for this episode. So look for that on japanesepod101.com but what’s the first thing you hear when you walk into a restaurant?
Naomi: いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase)
Eric: Yeah, actually that’s not only a restaurant, but anywhere you walk into. You don’t even have to walk in. You will hear いらっしゃいませ (irasshaimase) anywhere there is a shop. It means welcome. Welcome, come on in, feel welcome and then after that, we will hear it in the restaurant.
Naomi: 何名ですか (nan-mei desu ka) or 何名様ですか (nan-mei-sama desu ka).
Eric: A party of how many. They often also add 様 (sama), a polite suffix after 何名 (nan-mei).
Naomi: 何名様ですか。(Nan-mei-sama desu ka.)
次は文法です。(Tsugi wa bunpō desu.)

Lesson focus

Eric: The focus of this lesson is ましょうか (mashō ka) which is used to politely suggest or propose or invite and this creates a very polite expression that could be used to make a suggestion, a proposition or an invitation to someone of higher status. So you could think of it as why don’t we or shall we in English.
Naomi: The formation is quite easy. 易しいです。簡単ですね。(Yasashii desu. Kantan desu ne.) Just attach ましょうか (mashō ka) to the masu-stem of a verb.
Eric: For example, 食べます (tabemasu) is to eat. So drop ます (masu),
Naomi: 食べ (tabe)
Eric: And it’s called the masu-stem. Attach ましょうか (mashō ka) to the masu-stem,
Naomi: 食べましょうか (tabemashō ka)
Eric: Shall we eat?
Naomi: 行きます (ikimasu)
Eric: Is to go, shall we go?
Naomi: 行きましょうか (ikimashō ka)
聞きます (kikimasu)
Eric: Is to listen. Shall we listen?
Naomi: 聞きましょうか (kikimashō ka)
Eric: What’s to do?
Naomi: します (shimasu)
Eric: Shall we do?
Naomi: しましょうか (shimashō ka)
Eric: All right. Time to practice or shall we practice?
Naomi: はい。練習しましょう!(Hai. Renshū shimashō!)
Eric: Naomi-sensei, we are starving and you and your boss want to have some lunch. So you ask your boss, where shall we go?
Naomi: どこに行きましょうか。(Doko ni ikimashō ka.)
Eric: And your boss says, you decide. So you suggest going to my favorite restaurant CoCo 壱番 (Koko Ichi-ban).
Naomi: Coco壱番に行きましょうか。(Koko Ichi-ban ni ikimashō ka.)
Eric: And when you enter the restaurant, the waiter screams a welcome.
Naomi: いらっしゃいませ!(Irasshaimase!)
Eric: How many in your party?
Naomi: 何名様ですか。(Nan-mei-sama desu ka.)
Eric: This time it’s just you and your boss, so…
Naomi: 二名です。(Ni-mei desu.)
Eric: Okay Naomi-sensei, shall we finish?
Naomi: 終わりましょう。(Owarimashō.)

Outro

Eric: See you next time.
Naomi: じゃ、また。(Ja, mata.)
