INTRODUCTION
Eric: Welcome to japanesepod101.com. Newbie series season 4, Lori’s Story Lesson 41. Do you hate this too? Hi my name is Eric and I am joined here by Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: こんにちは。
Eric: こんにちは。
Naomi: よろしくお願いします。
Eric: よろしくお願いします。 In this lesson, we are going to learn how to say that you dislike or hate something.
Naomi: そうですね。 For example, 虫が嫌いです。 I hate insects.
Eric: We are going pretty negative on this episode hah!
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: This conversation takes place where?
Naomi: 大学。
Eric: On campus and the conversation is between?
Naomi: 水木さん and ロリーさん。
Eric: Mr. Mizuki and Lori and they will be speaking in.
Naomi: Formal Japanese. Listeners, I have a question.
Eric: What, a question?
Naomi: はい。 I want to know when was the last time you commented?
Eric: Ah ey! Good question.
Naomi: Stop by japanesepod101.com and leave us a comment or just say hi.
Eric: All right. Well you heard Naomi Sensei. Okay let’s listen.
DIALOGUE
MIZUKI : Wow, snowboarding huh? That sounds great!
僕もスキーが大好きです。
I love to ski myself.
あ、でも、まだ雪がありますか。
Oh, but do you think there is still snow on the mountains?
ロリー: さあ...。
LORI : I dunno...
水木: 代わりに、今度ラフティングに行きませんか。
MIZUKI : Why don’t we go rafting instead?
ロリー: ... 私は水が嫌いです。
LORI : I don’t like the water...
昔、おぼれました。
I almost drowned once.
水木: でも、ライフジャケット、ありますよ。
MIZUKI : But we’d have life jackets.
ロリー: 無理です。
LORI : Sorry, not going to happen.
水木: じゃ、山は?
MIZUKI : Okay, then what about the mountains?
キャンプをしませんか。
Why don’t we go camping?
ロリー: 私は虫が大嫌いです。無理です。
LORI : Not likely – I hate bugs.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Eric: Whoa Naomi Sensei!
Naomi: はい。
Eric: Hey, Lori didn’t really strike me as a picky type.
Naomi: あ~そうですね。
Eric: You know what I mean?
Naomi: She hates water and insects.
Eric: It seems like she was fine with snowboarding though, right?
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: So I guess she likes snow. By the way, when is the snowboarding season here in Japan?
Naomi: It really depends on the area but I think it starts from December and ends in March かな?12月から3月ですね。
Eric: From December to March. So you think it will be too late to go in April.
Naomi: ん~っとねぇ。 It depends on the climate of that year but some slopes are open unto early May. 5月まで大丈夫ですかね。
Eric: But you can expect powder snow in April or May though?
Naomi: だめですね。パウダースノーはないですね。
Eric: On to the vocabulary.
Naomi: 次は単語です。
VOCAB LIST
Eric: The first word is
Naomi: ラフティング
Eric: Rafting.
Naomi: (slow)ラフティング (natural speed) ラフティング
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 嫌い
Eric: Dislikable, to dislike, to hate.
Naomi: (slow)きらい (natural speed) 嫌い
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: 溺れます
Eric: To drown, to almost down.
Naomi: (slow)おぼれます (natural speed) 溺れます
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: ライフジャケット
Eric: Life jacket.
Naomi: (slow)ライフジャケット (natural speed) ライフジャケット
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: キャンプ
Eric: Camping.
Naomi: (slow)キャンプ (natural speed) キャンプ
Eric: The last word is
Naomi: スキー
Eric: Skiing.
Naomi: (slow)スキー (natural speed) スキー
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: A bunch of katakana words today right?
Naomi: はい。そうですね。
Eric: In the dialogue, we heard four words that sound a lot like English Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: そうですね。The first one is スキー。
Eric: Which means to ski or skiing.
Naomi: ラフティング
Eric: Rafting.
Naomi: キャンプ
Eric: Camping.
Naomi: And ライフジャケット。
Eric: Life jacket. You know another word in the vocabulary was to hate right?
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: To dislike something a lot.
Naomi: 嫌い
Eric: To hate, to dislike.
Naomi: The pronunciation is a bit tricky because we have a similar word which is きれい。
Eric: Well that’s almost like 嫌い。
Naomi: そうですね。きれい is beautiful.
Eric: So let’s get this clear. To hate is
Naomi: 嫌い
Eric: きらい with an あ sound right and beautiful is
Naomi: きれい
Eric: きれい. And you know, what I just noticed, the intonation is also different.
Naomi: そうですね。きらい。
Eric: To dislike. It starts low and goes up.
Naomi: きれい。
Eric: Beautiful. It starts high and goes low.
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: So really be careful with these two words. You don’t want to end up telling a boyfriend or girlfriend how much you hate their eyes. You don’t want to be explaining that. I am serious. So on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Eric: The focus of this lesson is expressing dislike.
Naomi: 私は水が嫌いです。
Eric: I hate water. The phrase が嫌いです can be used to talk about things that you don’t like and to talk about things that you do like, you can use
Naomi: が好きです。
Eric: Which was covered in the previous lesson.
Naomi: Right. 私はスキーが好きです。
Eric: I like skiing. To express dislike, the thing you dislike is marked with subject marking particle ga followed by 嫌いです. In the dialogue, Lori said
Naomi: 私は水が嫌いです。
Eric: I hate water. I dislike water and as we have mentioned before, you can drop the subject.
Naomi: 私は
Eric: And say
Naomi: 水が嫌いです。
Eric: So if you dislike camping
Naomi: キャンプが嫌いです。
Eric: If you hate bugs.
Naomi: 虫が嫌いです。エリックさん、何が嫌いですか?What do you dislike or what do you hate?
Eric: うーん、そうですね。朝のラッシュが嫌いです。
Naomi: Morning rush.
Eric: I hate the morning rush. It’s misery on the train.
Naomi: Nobody likes 朝のラッシュ、ね。
Eric: But Naomi Sensei 何が好きですか?
Naomi: チョコレートが好きです。
Eric: You have been saying that for a couple of episodes now. You want me to bring up a chocolate, don’t you?
Naomi: そうね。
Eric: Alright next time, next time. By the way 何が嫌いですか?
Naomi: 水が嫌いです。 I am just like Lori 昔、溺れました。
Eric: You almost drowned.
Naomi: 本当です。そう、昔、溺れました。
Eric: So that does it for today.

Outro

Naomi: Ready to test what you just learned.
Eric: Make this lesson’s vocabulary stick by using lesson specific flash cards in the learning center.
Naomi: There is a reason everyone uses flash cards.
Eric: Yeah they work.
Naomi: They really do help memorization.
Eric: You can get the flash cards for this lesson at japanesepod101.com.
Naomi: 皆さんは何が嫌いですか? please let us know.
Eric: Right complain about what you hate at japanesepod101.com in the comments section of this episode.
Naomi: お願いします。
Eric: See you next time.

Hi Joseph,

Thanks for leaving a comment!

I understood what you are trying to say, but it might be better to say it like below:

Canada wa yuki ga daisuki desu.

>> If you are talking about many Canadians like snow,

Canada-jin wa yuki ga daisuki desu.

Sukii wa totemo ninki desu.

>> Sukī wa totemo ninki ga arimasu.

Demo, teion wa daisukii desu.

>> This one, I'm not sure what you are trying to say. If you are trying to say "Canadians don't mind low temperature."

Canada-jin wa teion demo ki ni shimasen.

Sincerely,

Miki H
