INTRODUCTION
Eric: Welcome to japanesepod101.com. Newbie series, season 4. Lori’s Story, lesson 40. Here is something you like. Hi, my name is Eric and I am joined here by
Naomi: こんにちは。直美です。
Eric: こんにちは。よろしくお願いします。
Naomi: よろしくお願いします。
Eric: In this lesson, you will learn how to share your passions. Actually I mean just talk about what you like right?
Naomi: そうですね。チョコレートが好きです。
Eric: I have a passion for chocolate.
Naomi: I like chocolate.
Eric: Yeah I like chocolate. Yeah it’s better right. And where is it this time?
Naomi: 道、かな?
Eric: On the street.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: And who is talking?
Naomi: ロリーさんと静さん。
Eric: It seems like they just met up on the street and they are walking to the university together. So they will be speaking in
Naomi: Formal Japanese.
Eric: Now before we listen to the conversation
Naomi: We want to ask
Eric: Do you read the lesson notes while you listen?
Naomi: We received an email about the study tip.
Eric: So we were just wondering if you tried and if so
Naomi: What do you think of it?
Eric: Just leave us some feedback in the comments section of this lesson. Okay let’s listen.
DIALOGUE
LORI : Good morning Shizuka. Great weather today huh?
静さん...し・ず・かさん。
Shizuka? Shi –Zu – Ka...
静: え?ああ、ロリーさん。
SHIZUKA : Whu... Oh, Lori.
ああ、そうですね。いい天気ですね。
Yeah, great weather.
ロリー: 静さんはスポーツが好きですか。
LORI : Do you like sports, Shizuka?
静: ええ、好きですよ。スノボが好きです。
SHIZUKA : Yes I do. I like ‘suno-bo.’
ロリー: スノボ...。ああ、スノーボードですか。
LORI : ‘Suno-bo’?... Oh you mean ‘snowboarding.’
私もスノーボードが大好きです。リュウさんも、スノボをします。
I like to snowboard too and so does Ryu.
あ、今度、一緒にスノボをしませんか。
Hey, why don’t we all go together?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: It sounds like Shizuka is out of it.
Eric: Yeah. And you know what I think I could take a stab as to why that is, all right. If you remember from the last time, Shizuka got a phone call from her friend’s boyfriend.
Naomi: そうですね。リュウさんですね。
Eric: So she is probably thinking, should I tell Lori or should I say nothing and go to karaoke with Ryu? More dilemma right Naomi Sensei.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: Has this happened to you before?
Naomi: It doesn’t happen to me but I think it often happens. Don’t you think?
Eric: Uhh drawing from real life situation hah! Naomi Sensei in your script writing.
Naomi: はい。
Eric: So what do you think she is going to do?
Naomi: どうだろうね。 If I were Shizuka, I would tell Lori nothing.
Eric: Wow Naomi Sensei, why?
Naomi: え~だって…I don’t want to hurt my friend’s feeling.
Eric: Do you think it will hurt her or help her?
Naomi: あ~そうね。 Good question.
Eric: Uhh all right. Well, let’s think about that while we do our vocabulary.
Naomi: 次は単語です。
VOCAB LIST
Eric: What’s the first word?
Naomi: 天気
Eric: Weather.
Naomi: (slow)てんき (natural speed)天気
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: スノーボード
Eric: Snowboard.
Naomi: (slow)スノーボード (natural speed)スノーボード
Eric: The next word is
Naomi: スノボ
Eric: Snowboarding, abbreviation of snowboard.
Naomi: (slow)スノボ (natural speed)スノボ
Eric: The next word is.
Naomi: 好き
Eric: Likable, to like.
Naomi: (slow)すき (natural speed)好き
Eric: The next word is – the last word is
Naomi: スポーツ
Eric: Sport, sports.
Naomi: (slow)スポーツ (natural speed)スポーツ
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Eric: Naomi Sensei, that last word we just looked at was sports or sport, which one?
Naomi: Both.
Eric: But in Japanese, it is sports. It sounds like plural. It sounds like sports.
Naomi: そうね。スポーツ。
Eric: So sports can mean one sport or ten sports.
Naomi: Right again there is no difference between plural and singular in Japanese.
Eric: You know, you are talking about words that came from English, but isn’t there a natural Japanese word that means sports.
Naomi: あ~運動かな?
Eric: Ah 運動。 but doesn’t that mean exercise just like the general act of you know exercising?
Naomi: 運動 means exercise but it also means sport but 運動 sounds more serious than sport. I mean スポーツ.
Eric: So how would you say to play a sport?
Naomi: スポーツをします。スポーツします or of course, 運動をします or 運動します。
Eric: All right, exactly. You would say スポーツをします right. Literally to do sport. So let’s introduce some sports. To play tennis.
Naomi: テニスをします。
Eric: How about to play golf?
Naomi: ゴルフをします。
Eric: To skateboard.
Naomi: スケートボードをします or スケボをします。
Eric: To surf
Naomi: サーフィンをします。
Eric: How about martial arts.
Naomi: ん~空手をします。柔道をします。レスリングをします。
Eric: Yeah so that was karate, judo, wrestling. You know basically any sport you do plus します。 will be playing that sport right.
Naomi: そうですね。
Eric: On to the grammar.
Naomi: 次は文法です。

Lesson focus

Eric: Okay let’s talk about what we like. What do you like Naomi Sensei?
Naomi: うーん。チョコレート。
Eric: Right you said that at the beginning but what do we have in dialogue though?
Naomi: スノボが好きです。
Eric: I like snowboarding. This sentence should really be
Naomi: 私はスノボが好きです。
Eric: You know but it’s so obvious that you are talking about what you like. So the 私は is dropped. Say it one more time.
Naomi: スノボが好きです
Eric: And by using something が好きです you can express what you like. So if you like skateboarding
Naomi: スケートボードが好きです。
Eric: If you like movies
Naomi: 映画が好きです。
Eric: If you like music
Naomi: Music in Japanese is 音楽。 So 音楽が好きです。
Eric: What if you like traveling?
Naomi: Traveling in Japanese is 旅行。
Eric: 旅行が好きです。
Naomi: そうです。
Eric: All right. Time to practice. I am going to say an English word and Naomi Sensei is going to give you the corresponding Japanese word and what you have to do is say that you like it before we give you the answer. Tennis.
Naomi: テニス。テニスが好きです。
Eric: Football.
Naomi: フットボール。フットボールが好きです。
Eric: Japanese animation.
Naomi: アニメ。アニメが好きです。
Eric: Japan.
Naomi: 日本。日本が好きです。
Eric: Japanese food.
Naomi: 日本食。日本食が好きです or Japanese food could be 和食。 So 和食が好きです is also fine.
Eric: You.
Naomi: あなた。あなたが好きです。
Eric: Ah Naomi Sensei, and you blush.
Naomi: エリックさんは何が好きですか?
Eric: 犬が好きです。
Naomi: You like dogs?
Eric: I love dogs. I should have said 大好きです hah!
Naomi: あ~犬が大好き。
Eric: 大好き!

Outro

Naomi: なるほどね。皆さんは何が好きですか? Please let us know.
Eric: Yeah drop by japanesepod101.com and leave a comment.
Naomi: お願いします。
Eric: See you next time.

Hi Nathan,

Thank you very much for the question.

[How would you say "track and field" or "cross country" in Japanese?]

>> In Japan, both "track and field" and "cross country" are often referred as 陸上競技(りくじょうきょうぎ/ rikujō kyōgi) as one group. No separation between the two. But in order to specify the long distance running for "cross country", people may add 長距離 (ちょうきょり/chōkyori) or 中距離 (ちゅうきょり/chūkyori) to the term ランニング/ranningu.

Sincerely,

Miki H
