POST CONVERSATION BANTER

Naomi: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Lori misunderstood.
Eric: Oh so she heard it Drew?
Naomi: うん。(Un.)
Eric: Even though it was Ryu.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Eric: But Shizuka didn’t correct it?
Naomi: No, she is going to correct in the next lesson.
Eric: You always cliffhanger us, man! Can’t wait till the next one. By the way, the conversation at the beginning with Lori and someone was that Mizuki-san?
Naomi: そうです。水木さんですね。(Sō desu. Mizuki-san desu ne.)
Eric: Right. That was a one-sided conversation.
Naomi: Yeah. Mizuki-san’s line is not recorded.
Eric: But you can kind of guess what he is trying to say, right?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Eric: So Naomi-sensei, can you tell us, fill in the blanks for us?
Naomi: Oh okay, so I will be Mr. Mizuki. So why don’t you read Lori’s line, Eric?

Naomi: 飲みます (nomimasu)
Eric: To drink or to take medicine.
Naomi: 薬を飲みます (kusuri o nomimasu)
Eric: Literally, I will drink medicine but of course it means I will take medicine.
Naomi: You never say I drink medicine in English.
Eric: Well if the medicine is a liquid, yeah you could say it.
Naomi: あ~、そうなんだ。(Ā, sō nan da.)

Lesson focus
|
Eric: In this lesson, you are going to learn how to describe people or items using more than two adjectives and we are going to review な (na) ending adjectives. and Naomi-sensei and I recorded a list of na-adjectives in a bonus track. So check it out at japanesepod101.com. First introduce just two na-adjectives.
Naomi: おしゃれ (oshare)
Eric: Stylish.
Naomi: ハンサム (hansamu)
Eric: Handsome. So some English adjectives can be used as na-adjectives in Japanese.
Naomi: For example, リッチな人 (ritchi na hito)
Eric: A rich person.
Naomi: エレガントな人 (ereganto na hito)
Eric: Elegant person. So remember, when an na-adjective comes before a noun, you need to put な (na) between the adjective and the noun. So how do you say, a stylish person?
Naomi: おしゃれな人 (oshare na hito)
Eric: Handsome person.
Naomi: ハンサムな人 (hansamu na hito)
Eric: How about a stylish and handsome person?
Naomi: おしゃれでハンサムな人 (oshare de hansamu na hito)
Eric: おしゃれで (oshare de) is like stylish and – so that で (de) works as the sort of a glue, right? Na-adjectives that precede another adjective have to be in で (de) form. So おしゃれ (oshare) becomes
Naomi: おしゃれで (oshare de)
Eric: So how do you say a rich and elegant person?
Naomi: リッチでエレガントな人 (ritchi de ereganto na hito)
Eric: The rule of this conjugation is explained in the lesson notes. So please don’t forget to download the PDF.
Naomi: じゃあ、エリックさん。(Jā, Erikku-san.) How do you say stylish, handsome, rich and elegant person?
Eric: おしゃれで、ハンサムで、リッチで、エレガントな人。(Oshare de, hansamu de, ritchi de, ereganto na hito.)
Naomi: う〜ん、いいですね。(Ūn, ii desu ne.)
Eric: Do you know such a person?
Naomi: Unfortunately no. Do you?
Eric: Yeah, she is sitting right across to me.
Naomi: あ~、え?あたし?(Ā, e? Atashi?)
Outro
|
Eric: Well that does it for today. I will see you guys next time.
Naomi: じゃ、また。(Ja, mata.)
