POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Peter: Naomi-sensei,
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: What do you think of today’s conversation?
Naomi: Useful.
Peter: Very useful, especially the numbers.
(Hai, sō desu ne.) Some guys need to know.
Peter: Some girls, too.
(Ā, denwa bangō wa nan desu ka.)
Peter: That is the all important phrase.
(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: Akihiro-san, can you give us that, one more time?
(Denwa bangō wa nan desu ka.)
Peter: What did you think?
(Ii desu ne.)
Peter: He sounds like he has practiced quite a bit.
(Renshū shinai to.)
(Renshū shinai to.) If you don’t practice, ah great reaction. And yes, speaking of which, let’s get into today’s vocab.
VOCAB LIST
Peter: Naomi-sensei, what do we have first?
Peter: Computer.
Peter: Now there is a nice and simple way to say computer. Can you tell us that?
Naomi: PC. No?
Peter: That too, but would PC get across in Japanese? You have to make it into
Peter: There it is. Before we even get into that, I think if you say PC with a Japanese accent, that would work, right?
(Hai. Pīshī.)
(Sō sō sō.)
Peter: That works.
(Hai, tabun ne.) Do you still remember that word from last week?
Peter: Here is your perfect chance to use it, たぶん (tabun). PC?(Akihiro-san, dō desu ka, pīshī?)
(Ūn, tabun wakai hito dattara pīshī de wakaru to omoimasu.)
Peter: If it’s a young person, they would probably know PC or ピーシー (pīshī).
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
(Pasokon dattara minna wakaru to omoimasu.)
Peter: This next word everybody would know which is, Naomi-sensei
Peter: Personal computer, break it down.
Peter: And this is short of course for
Naomi: Personal computer.
Peter: Gets chopped down into
Peter: Which is so nice and easy to say.
Peter: Now wait! I didn’t get that pitch accent, right? Could we go over that one more time?
Peter: So kind of rising and then leveling off, パソコン (pasokon).
(Sō sō sō. Pasokon.)
(Sō sō, sō sō. Sō desu.)
Peter: All right. This is very exciting. Next we have
Peter: Password.
Peter: Very straightforward taken from the English word, password. This is followed by
Naomi: 会社 (kaisha)
Peter: Company.
Peter: And next we have, Akihiro-san.
Akihiro: 電話 (denwa)
Peter: Telephone.
Akihiro: (slow) でんわ (denwa) (natural speed) 電話 (denwa)
Peter: Now I find the characters here and again we are going to – I am going to talk about kanji over and over because it’s so interesting and the quicker you get in, the more exciting it is. So Naomi-sensei,
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: What does the first character in this word mean?
Naomi: Electricity.
Peter: The second character means
Naomi: Talk.
Peter: So electric talk.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Akihiro: Sounds interesting.
Peter: Naomi is pretending to be a little bit shocked over here but yeah. So if it helps, you can think of it like sometimes in a conversation, you hear something shocking. So shocking talk.
(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: And you usually do stuff like that over the telephone. So if that little pneumatic works. Oh more power to you. This is followed by
Naomi: 番号 (bangō)
Peter: Number.
Peter: Now if we take the previous word and combine it with this word, we have telephone number, which is
Peter: Okay, so that covers our vocab.

Lesson focus

Peter: Now let’s take a look at today’s conversation which is between who again, one more time?
(Kimu Mi Yon-san).
Peter: Okay, so first we start off with Kim and can you please play Kim, sensei?
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Okay, what do we have first?
(Sumimasen, Higashi-san.)
Peter: Excuse me Higashi, this is followed by
(Konpyūtā no pasuwādo wa nan desu ka.)
Peter: What’s the password for the computer? Now let’s take a look at this sentence because it actually includes one of today’s grammar points.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: What do we have first?
Peter: Computer.
Naomi: の (no)
Peter: Then we have the particle, の (no).
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: And here it’s acting as a possessive. So if we read back what we have to this point
Peter: It becomes computer’s. The possessive as in Peter’s, (Pītā no), Peter’s. How about sensei’s?
Naomi: 先生の (sensei no)
Peter: How about Akihiro-san’s?
(Akihiro-san no)
Peter: So what we have here is used as a possessive. Then we have following this?
Peter: Password. So literally computer’s password and this is marked by
Naomi: は (wa)
Peter: Topic marking particle. This is followed by
Peter: What is. So literally, computer’s password, what it is. Translated to English, what is the computer’s password? So very straightforward.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) Very simple.
Peter: Very simple. Now let’s try a little something here to expand it or wait, let’s save that for after. Let’s go through this conversation first. Now we have something to look forward to. Akihiro-san, what do we have next?
Peter: Again repeating and here just reading back the first part of the last sentence just verifying it. Computer’s password. Now Naomi-sensei,
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: There is no です (desu) here. It’s very informal. What’s going on here? Why is it so informal?
Naomi: I think he is kind of talking to himself.
Peter: So if he is talking to himself, it doesn’t have to be polite.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: So he is kind of running it by himself like you know when you think it to yourself, the computer’s password… umm.
Naomi: Exactly.
Peter: And this is verified by the next line, which is
(Etto, kaisha no denwa bangō desu.)
Peter: The first part there we have is
Akihiro: えっと (etto)
Peter: Which is equivalent to hmm, it’s a filler. It’s a Japanese filler when you need some time to think about what you are going to respond to and here he is thinking about what’s the password and in this case, one more time Naomi-sensei, what is the password?
Naomi: 会社の電話番号です (kaisha no denwa bangō desu)
Peter: The company’s telephone number. Literally we have here hmm… Company’s telephone number is, but again what’s inferred here?
Naomi: It.
Peter: So literally hmm…company’s telephone number is it and we just changed the order here. It is the company’s telephone number. Now if we just want to give you a little comparison of what it would look like next to a textbook, Naomi-sensei, what would this response look like in a textbook?
(Konpyūtā no pasuwādo wa, kaisha no denwa bangō desu.)
Peter: Now you heard the first part, コンピューターのパスワード (konpyūtā no pasuwādo), but as it’s understood as the topic that we are talking about, that gets dropped. Don’t need to repeat it.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Cut out the excess, cut out the fat.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: So it’s the company’s telephone number and again here we have the possessive, の (no), the possessive. First we have
Naomi: 会社 (kaisha)
Peter: Company, followed by
Naomi: の (no)
Peter: Possessive. So company’s, followed by
Peter: Company’s telephone number.
Naomi: です (desu)
Peter: It is – so the company’s telephone number. Now next line, we have more repetition here.
Naomi: え?(E?)
Peter: え?(E?)
Naomi: Frozen, え?(E?)
Peter: え?(E?), which is an interjection expressing surprise or…
Naomi: Uncertainty.
Peter: There it is. Well she doesn’t quite get it. So we are going to fill her in. Higashi,
(Konpyūtā no pasuwādo wa kaisha no denwa bangō desu.)
Peter: The computer’s password is the company’s telephone number.
Naomi: Yeah, textbook style.
Peter: Textbook style but the textbook is very clear.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: And when you start dropping things out even when native Japanese people are speaking, sometimes they have to go back and confirm things. Was that what we were talking about?
(Hai, sō desu.)
Peter: Kind of this kind of exchange here. So I think it works well.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Then we have
(Kaisha no denwa bangō wa nan desu ka.)
Peter: What is the company’s phone number? Now here we have this week’s grammar point combined with last week’s grammar point.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Last week was
(Kore wa nan desu ka.)
Peter: What is this but that これ (kore) can be changed.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: And whatever comes before the は (wa) can be used here, the topic marking particle は (wa) and here we put in
Naomi: 会社の電話番号 (kaisha no denwa bangō)
Peter: Company’s telephone number. The company’s telephone number is what? Literally we have, company’s telephone number is. So what is the company’s telephone number? Then we have
Akihiro: 03-345-6788です。(Zero san san yon go roku nana hachi hachi desu.)
Peter: 03-345-6788.
(Hai. Eeto, zero san haifun, kono haifun.) Some people call it の (no). So some people might say 03の345の6788 (zero san no san yon go no roku nana hachi hachi).
Peter: Now one quick thing we want to point out about this telephone number. There are a few things we could tell right off the bat. If you see or hear 03, what do you know right away?
Naomi: It’s in Tokyo.
Peter: Tokyo number. Now second, this has – this number has 9 digits.
Naomi: Ah…
Peter: Which makes it invalid. This is not a real number.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.) So don’t call it. Don’t call this number.
Peter: To be a real number, a real Tokyo number, what does it need?
Naomi: One more number.
Peter: So I want it to be a real number. It needs one more number. The way Tokyo numbers are broken down, it’s two digits followed by hyphen which Naomi-san covered sometimes when speaking is referred to as の (no) two digits hyphen, four digits hyphen, four digits. We only have 2, 3, 4. So it doesn’t quite work here but again more about this inside the PDF. Today’s PDF has an amazing write up. So before we head out today, we just want to go over numbers. So what we are going to do here is it’s kind of the same format as the vocab. Naomi-sensei and Akihiro-san will give you the Japanese, I will give you the English and we will also give you the breakdown. Okay, so numbers 1 to 10, actually 0 to 10. Here we go.
Naomi: ゼロ (zero)
Peter: Zero.
Naomi: (slow) ぜろ (zero) (natural speed) ゼロ (zero)
Peter: There is also
Akihiro: れい (rei)
Peter: Zero.
Akihiro: (slow) れい (rei) (natural speed) れい (rei)
Peter: Next.
Naomi: いち (ichi)
Peter: One.
Naomi: (slow) いち (ichi) (natural speed) いち (ichi)
Peter: Next
Akihiro: に (ni)
Peter: Two.
Akihiro: に (ni)
Peter: Next
Naomi: さん (san)
Peter: Three.
Naomi: (slow) さん (san) (natural speed) さん (san)
Peter: The next one also has two ways of saying it.
Naomi: よん (yon)
Peter: Four.
Naomi: (slow) よん (yon) (natural speed) よん (yon)
Peter: Alternate way.
Akihiro: し (shi)
Peter: Four.
Akihiro: し (shi)
Peter: Next
Naomi: ご (go)
Peter: Five.
Naomi: ご (go)
Peter: Followed by
Akihiro: ろく (roku)
Peter: Six.
Akihiro: (slow) ろく (roku) (natural speed) ろく (roku)
Peter: Seven also has two ways to say it.
Naomi: なな (nana)
Peter: Seven.
Naomi: (slow) なな (nana) (natural speed) なな (nana)
Peter: Alternate way?
Akihiro: しち (shichi)
Peter: Seven.
Akihiro: (slow) しち (shichi) (natural speed) しち (shichi)
Peter: Next
Naomi: はち (hachi)
Peter: Eight.
Naomi: (slow) はち (hachi) (natural speed) はち (hachi)
Peter: Next way also has two ways to say it.
Akihiro: きゅう (kyū)
Peter: Nine.
Peter: Alternate way.
Naomi: く (ku)
Peter: Finally we have
Akihiro: じゅう (jū)
Peter: Ten.
Peter: Uh…
Naomi: 大変。(Taihen.)
(Otsukare-sama.)

Outro

(Otsukare-sama desu.) Yes, this was a long lesson. So that’s going to do it for today.
(Jā, mata.)
(Otsukare-sama deshita.)
