VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Peter: Okay Naomi-sensei, let’s take a closer look at some of these words. Now before we get in, I just want to again point out that please notice how many i-adjectives come back down but the pitch accent drops on the last い (i). Now this isn’t always the case but seems that there are many i-adjectives that fall on the last syllable.
Naomi: おいしい、若い、かわいい。(Oishii, wakai, kawaii.) 全部「い」で (zenbu “i” de) drop してますね (shite masu ne).
Peter: Dropping on い (i).
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: Okay, now let’s take a look at some of the words that we just went over. Let’s first take a look at
Naomi: 元気 (genki)
Peter: One of the words you will hear over and over again. Really high frequency word. Can you
give us an example sentence?
Naomi: 元気ですか。(Genki desu ka.)
Peter: Literally, are you vim? Are you – what is vim?
Naomi: Vim, vigor and vitality. I thought that they are a set.
Peter: The three Vs.
Naomi: Yeah. No.
Peter: I don’t know but again umm I should really brush up on my English but yeah vigor, are you vigorous or are you full of energy?
Naomi: そうですね。(Sō desu ne.)
Peter: But we translate it of course are you fine?
Naomi: So how are you, みたいな感じですね (mitai na kanji desu ne).
Peter: That’s right.
Naomi: おはようございます、元気ですか。(Ohayō gozaimasu, genki desu ka.)
Peter: Good morning. How are you?
Naomi: If you are fine. 元気です。(Genki desu.)
Peter: I am fine.
Naomi: Yeah, that’s how you answer the question.
Peter: And if you are really good
Naomi: とても元気です。(Totemo genki desu.)
Peter: I am really good and back from when we originally started, my favorite expression of all in Japanese, 絶好調です (zekkōchō desu). I am firing on all cylinders. 絶好調です。(Zekkōchō desu.)
Naomi: More than perfect, みたいなね (mitai na ne).
Peter: More than perfect. Give it to us nice and slow in Japanese.
Naomi: 絶好調 (zekkōchō) (slow) ぜっこうちょう (zekkōchō) (natural speed) 絶好調 (zekkōchō)
Peter: So going up in the middle and then coming back down.
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: 絶好調 (zekkōchō)
Naomi: そうです。(Sō desu.)
Peter: Pretty funny for you.
Naomi: そうね。(Sō ne.) Not many Japanese people say that because people in Tokyo are so tired. They can’t be 絶好調 (zekkōchō).
Peter: Well I think everyone should try it next time you meet somebody. 元気ですか。絶好調です!(Genki desu ka. Zekkōchō desu!)
Naomi: 面白い。(Omoshiroi.)
Peter: I think quite some people would be surprised by this.
Naomi: Yeah.
Peter: Okay, next we have
Naomi: タイプ (taipu)
Peter: As in the English meaning type as in what’s your type?
Naomi: マサトは私のタイプです。(Masato wa watashi no taipu desu.)

Peter: Kaori is my type.
Naomi: あなたは私のタイプです。(Anata wa watashi no taipu desu.)
Peter: You are my type. ナオミ先生のタイプは?(Naomi-sensei no taipu wa?)
Naomi: 私のタイプですか。えっと、私のタイプは、マサトです。(Watashi no taipu desu ka. Etto, watashi no taipu wa, Masato desu.)
Peter: マサトですか。(Masato desu ka.)
Naomi: はい、マサトは、(Hai, Masato wa,) K-1 fighter.
Peter: That guy?
Naomi: はい。(Hai.)
Peter: He is a criminal.
Naomi: うそ。うそうそうそ?(Uso. Uso uso uso?)
Peter: I don’t know but, そうですか (sō desu ka).
Naomi: ピーターさんのタイプはどんな人ですか。(Pītā-san no taipu wa donna hito desu ka.)
Peter: 奥さんです。(Okusan desu.)
Naomi: あ、そうですか。ごちそうさまです。(A, sō desu ka. Gochisō-sama desu.)
Peter: My wife. ごちそうさまです?(Gochisō-sama desu?) Eh what does that mean?
Naomi: ごちそうさま (gochisō-sama) is the expression we use after we finish eating.
Peter: Yeah, I know I got that one but what does this mean in this case?
Naomi: When someone is talking about one’s girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband and that the person is saying that they are having a really good relationship, in that case, we say oh okay, ごちそうさまでした (gochisō-sama deshita).
Peter: So it’s used when the speaker finishes telling you about someone who they are really close with in a romantic way.
Naomi: はい。そうですね。(Hai. Sō desu ne.)
Peter: So Naomi-sensei, if you came to me and you told me about….
Naomi: My boyfriend is wonderful, he is so handsome and he is so nice to me and... っていうときに、ああ、ごちそうさまでした。(Tte iu toki ni, ā, gochisō-sama deshita.)
Peter: That’s what I would say. ああ、ごちそうさまでした (ā, gochisō-sama deshita), like thank you for sharing your happiness with me and allowing me to enjoy your happiness.
Naomi: So, Thank you for showing off your happiness っていう感じ (tte iu kanji).
Peter: Ah wow!
Naomi: It’s a compliment.
Peter: Thank you for showing off your happiness but related to something romantic.
Naomi: そうそう、そうです。(Sō sō, sō desu.)
Peter: ごちそうさまでした。(Gochisō-sama deshita.)
Naomi: そう、ごちそうさまでした。(Sō, gochisō-sama deshita.)
Peter: Wow! You know, that’s the first time I heard this.
Naomi: Really?
Peter: I guess my friends are just miserable. Well or they don’t like to hear me talk about my happiness because yeah my initial reaction is like ah! Jealous. You have to not have any jealousy to say this or be in a really good situation yourself, ごちそうさまでした (gochisō-sama deshita).
Naomi: もっと「ごちそうさまでした」は (Motto “gochisō-sama deshita” wa), not really a bad word at all. 難しいね。(Muzukashii ne.)
Peter: Ha ha ha! That is some very advanced Japanese we just tried to cover there.

Lesson focus

Peter: Okay, on to today’s grammar point. Now Naomi-sensei, today we are going to be going over adjectives and nouns. So let’s go back to where this appeared in the conversation. Can you tell us where we had an adjective? Can you give us an example of where an adjective appeared?
Naomi: これはおいしいです。(Kore wa oishii desu.)
Peter: This is delicious. Again the standard A topic, topic marking particle, adjective followed by the polite form of the copula です (desu). Then we had the adjective actually precede the noun in this sentence.
Naomi: これは、おいしいお茶です。(Kore wa, oishii o-cha desu.)
Peter: This is delicious tea. Now let’s take a look here at the components of this sentence. First we have
Naomi: これ (kore)
Peter: This.
Naomi: は (wa)
Peter: Topic marking particle.
Naomi: おいしい (oishii)
Peter: Delicious.
Naomi: お茶 (o-cha)
Peter: Tea.
Naomi: です (desu)
Peter: Is. This delicious tea is. This is delicious tea. Let’s take a look at a na-adjective. Next we have
Naomi: ファブリツィオさんはにぎやかです。(Faburitsio-san wa nigiyaka desu.)
Peter: Fabrizio is lively.
Naomi: ファブリツィオさんはにぎやかな人です。(Faburitsio-san wa nigiyaka na hito desu.)
Peter: Fabrizio is a lively person. Now the first sentence, one more time.
Naomi: ファブリツィオさんはにぎやかです。(Faburitsio-san wa nigiyaka desu.)
Peter: Fabrizio にぎやか (nigiyaka) lively is. He is lively. In the second sentence, we have
Naomi: ファブリツィオさんはにぎやかな人です。(Faburitsio-san wa nigiyaka na hito desu.)
Peter: The first part.
Naomi: ファブリツィオ (Faburitsio)
Peter: Fabrizio.
Naomi: は (wa)
Peter: Topic marking particle same as the previous sentence. Then we have
Naomi: にぎやかな、にぎやか (nigiyaka na, nigiyaka)
Peter: Lively followed by
Naomi: な (na)
Peter: This indicates that this na-adjective is preceding a noun and that noun is
Naomi: 人 (hito)
Peter: So we have na-adjective, preceding noun. So we need that な (na) in between there. That sandwich adjective な (na) noun, にぎやかな人 (nigiyaka na hito). So the adjective is modifying that noun. Fabrizio lively person is. Fabrizio is a lively person.
Naomi: ファブリツィオはにぎやかな人です。(Faburitsio wa nigiyaka na hito desu.)

Outro

Peter: All right. That’s going to do it for today.
Naomi: じゃあ、また。(Jā, mata.)

ファブリツィオ (Faburitsio) : とても 元気な人です。オフィスは いつも にぎやかです。(Totemo genki na hito desu. Ofisu wa itsumo nigiyaka desu.)
