INTRODUCTION
Eric: Must-Know Japanese Social Media Phrases Season 1. Lesson 24 - At Christmas.
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to post and leave comments in Japanese about Christmas greetings. 葉月 (Hazuki) celebrates Christmas with her family, posts an image of it, and leaves this comment:
Risa: メリークリスマス!旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Merī Kurisumasu! Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.)
Eric: Meaning - "Merry Christmas! Off to see some illuminations with my husband." Listen to a reading of the post and the comments that follow.

POST
Eric: Listen again to 葉月 (Hazuki)'s post.
Risa: メリークリスマス!旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Merī Kurisumasu! Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.)
Eric: "Merry Christmas! Off to see some illuminations with my husband."
Risa: (SLOW) メリークリスマス!旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Merī Kurisumasu! Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.) (Regular) メリークリスマス!旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Merī Kurisumasu! Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.)
Eric: Let's break this down. First is an expression meaning "Merry Christmas!"
Risa: メリークリスマス! (Merī Kurisumasu! )
Eric: Since not so many people in Japan are Christians, Christmas is not celebrated as it is in western countries, but we do give greetings, decorate our houses so that they’re a bit christmassy, exchange gifts, and so on. It's also more common to celebrate it on Christmas Eve than Christmas Day in Japan. And we don't have any Christmas holidays! Listen again- "Merry Christmas! " is...
Risa: (SLOW) メリークリスマス! (Merī Kurisumasu! ) (REGULAR) メリークリスマス! (Merī Kurisumasu! )
Eric: Then comes the phrase - "Off to see some illuminations with my husband."
Risa: 旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.)
Eric: Compared to western countries, it is rare to find someone who thinks of Christmas as a family event in Japan. Christmas in Japan is more of a romantic event for couples or a day to get your child a gift rather than to spend time with your family. For couples, going to see light displays is a popular thing to do on Christmas, as it gives a romantic mood. Listen again- "Off to see some illuminations with my husband." is...
Risa: (SLOW) 旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.) (REGULAR) 旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.)
Eric: All together, "Merry Christmas! Off to see some illuminations with my husband."
Risa: メリークリスマス!旦那とイルミネーションを見に行ってきます。 (Merī Kurisumasu! Danna to iruminēshon o mi ni itte kimasu.)
