INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 8. Talking About Things You Do Often.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for Talking About Things You Do Often.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I often exercise."
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Risa: [slow] 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: The pattern for Talking About Things You Do Often has 3 elements. First, "I" + topic marking particle.
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa ).
Eric: Second, an adverb meaning "often".
Risa: よく (yoku).
Eric: Third, a verb in the masu form meaning "to exercise."
Risa: 運動します (undō shimasu).
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "I often exercise."
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.) [slow] 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.) [normal] 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: To say “[Person] often do/does [something].” in Japanese, person, in this case “I,” plus the topic marking particle
Risa: 私は (watashi wa)
Eric: comes first; and the frequency adverb
Risa: よく (yoku)
Eric: then a verb or verb phrase in the non-past tense or masu form meaning "do something", in this case,
Risa: 運動します (undō shimasu).
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: So remember that to talk about something you do often, say [Person], the topic marking particle
Risa: は (wa)
Eric: the frequency adverb
Risa: よく (yoku)
Eric: and a verb or verb phrase in the non-past tense or masu form at the end.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I often go to a sushi place." First, "I" + topic marking particle.
Risa: 私は (Watashi wa )
Eric: Second, an adverb meaning "often".
Risa: よく (yoku)
Eric: Third, a verb phrase meaning "to go to a sushi place" - broken down into these parts. First,
Risa: 寿司屋(Sushi-ya)
Eric: followed by a direction marking particle,
Risa: に (ni)
Eric: and the masu form of a verb meaning "to go".
Risa: 行きます (ikimasu)
Risa: 寿司屋に行きます (sushi-ya ni ikimasu).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Risa: 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.) [slow] 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.) [normal] 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.)
Eric: "I often go to a sushi place."
[pause]
Risa: 私はよく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.)
Eric: How do you say - "Japanese people often eat fish"? To give you a hint, "fish" is..
Risa: 魚 (sakana). [slow] 魚 (sakana). [normal] 魚 (sakana).
Eric: "Japanese people often eat fish."
[pause]
Risa: 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. ) [slow] 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. ) [normal] 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. )
[pause]
Risa: 日本人は、よく魚を食べます。 (NIhon-jin wa, yoku sakana o tabemasu. )
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
Eric: "I often exercise."
[pause]
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: 私は、よく運動します。 (Watashi wa, yoku undō shimasu.)
Eric: "I often go to a sushi place."
[pause]
Risa: 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: 私は、よく寿司屋に行きます。 (Watashi wa, yoku sushi-ya ni ikimasu.)

Tinaさん、こんにちは。

コメントありがとうございます!

「毎日日本語をよく勉強しています。」の「よく」はoften ではなく well の意味になりますが、

どちらの文も、よく書けていますよ。

>Hayleyさん、こんにちは。

ショッピングは楽しいですよね!

私もよくショッピングをしますよ。

>Han Weiさん、こんにちは。

あまり牛肉を食べませんか。

私もあまり食べません。

毎朝聖書を読みますか。すごいですね!

The sentences are good!

Please just be careful that you type "わたしは” for "watashi wa",

The particle "wa" is written as "は.”

> アンジ シンクレイアさん、

こんにちは!

I'm very sorry for the late reply!

And I'm very sorry for the confusion by our team member's comment!! ?

What Ethan wrote (読みます) is totally fine and correct. What Piers gave (読んでいます) is also correct,

but the meaning and connotation are slightly different. If you simply state you read book(s) everyday,

it's 読みます because you're stating your habit. If you're saying about recent activity, 読んでいます would be

more appropriate. Hope this clarifies the question! ;)

Lastly, please check the corrected version of what you wrote and ask us questions if any!

ちょっと 書いてみます。

私と 私のかれし(ボーイフレンド)は あまり 散歩をしません。でも。。。散歩をしたいです!

私達は よく 映画 を みます。

私の猫は いつも、いつも 寝ます。

ボーイフレンドは 毎日 ギターを ひきます。

> Dexterさん、

こんにちは!

I'm very sorry for the late reply!

All correct! Well done!! ?

Regarding the sentences for 2, both are actually correct. It's a matter of what you want to say or

what the focus of the sentence is. I mean, the sentence

a. 私は日本語を毎日勉強します。

sounds like you're expressing 'everyday' more strongly than other information. And,

b. 私は毎日日本語を勉強します。

sounds like a simple statement of what you do everyday.

So, if the conversation was about studying and you need to say how often you study Japanese,

you'd say the sentence a. If the conversation is about what you do everyday, you can say

the sentence b.

Hope this helps! ;)

> Alexanderさん、

Oops, you didn't end the second sentence...maybe because you wanted us to guess 'yes' or 'no'?? ??

私は、ときどき雑誌を読みます。OR 私は、ときどき雑誌を読みません。

Please note ぜんぜん should be coupled with negative expression:

私は、ぜんぜんスペイン語を勉強しませんでした。
