| John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking indirect questions. |
| PATTERN |
| John: For example, |
| John: "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?" |
| Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) |
| Risa: [slow] スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) |
| John: The pattern for asking indirect questions has three elements. First, a sentence in informal form, which refers to the question, in this case "where the Sky Tree is." |
| Risa: スカイツリーがどこにある (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru) |
| John: Second, the particle to make embedded questions. |
| Risa: か (ka) |
| John: Third, a phrase meaning "do you know?". |
| Risa: 知っていますか (shitte imasu ka). |
| John: Altogether, we have... "Do you know where the Sky Tree is?" |
| Risa: スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) [slow] スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) [normal] スカイツリーがどこにあるか、知っていますか。 (Sukaitsurī ga doko ni aru ka, shitte imasu ka.) |
| John: The sentence pattern to say "Do you know...?" in Japanese, is a sentence in informal form which refers to the question, followed by the particle to make the sentence into an embedded question, plus a phrase meaning "Do you know?" |

| John: So remember, to ask indirect questions, you say the question sentence in informal form followed by... |

| John: and finally… |
| Risa: 知っていますか (shitte imasu ka) |
| John: Here is another example meaning, "Do you know who that person is?" First, a sentence in informal form, meaning "who that person is." |
| Risa: あの人は誰 (Ano hito wa dare) |
| John: Second, a particle to make embedded questions. |
| Risa: か (ka) |
| John: Third, a phrase meaning "do you know?". |
| Risa: 知っていますか (shitte imasu ka) |
| John: Altogether we have... |
