INTRODUCTION
John: Hi everyone, I'm John.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
John: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 35 - Expressing Certainty.
John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing certainty.
PATTERN
John: For example,
John: "I'm sure I can make it."
Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
Risa: [slow] きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
John: The pattern for expressing certainty has four elements. First, an adverb meaning "surely,"
Risa: きっと (Kitto).
John: Second, an informal sentence meaning "I can make it." .
Risa: 間に合う (ma ni au).
John: Third, a quotation marker,
Risa: と (to).
John: And last, a verb meaning "to think,"
Risa: 思います (omoimasu).
John: Altogether, we have... "I'm sure I can make it."
Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) [slow] きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.) [normal] きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
John: The sentence pattern to say "I'm sure that..." in Japanese starts with an adverb meaning "surely,"
Risa: きっと (Kitto)
John: plus an informal sentence expressing what you have confidence in, plus the quotation marker,
Risa: と (to).
John: And finally, a verb meaning "to think,"
Risa: 思います (omoimasu).
John: So, "I'm sure I can make it." would be
Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
John: So, to express certainty, remember to first say
Risa: きっと (Kitto)
John: then what you are sure of in an informal sentence. At the end, add
Risa: と思います (to omoimasu).
John: Here is another example meaning, "I'm sure it'll be alright." First, the adverb meaning "surely,"
Risa: きっと (Kitto).
John: Second, an informal sentence meaning "It'll be alright." .
Risa: 大丈夫だ (daijōbu da).
John: Third, a quotation marker,
Risa: と (to).
John: And last, a verb meaning "to think,"
Risa: 思います (omoimasu).
John: Altogether we have...
Risa: きっと大丈夫だと思います。 (Kitto daijōbu da to omoimasu.) [slow] きっと大丈夫だと思います。 (Kitto daijōbu da to omoimasu.) [normal] きっと大丈夫だと思います。 (Kitto daijōbu da to omoimasu.)
John: "I'm sure it'll be alright."
[pause]
Risa: きっと大丈夫だと思います。 (Kitto daijōbu da to omoimasu.)
John: How do you say, "I'm sure we will win this game." To give you a hint, "to win this game" is...
Risa: この試合に勝つ (kono shiai ni katsu). [slow] この試合に勝つ (kono shiai ni katsu). [normal] この試合に勝つ (kono shiai ni katsu).
John: "I'm sure we will win this game."
[pause]
Risa: きっとこの試合に勝つと思います。 (Kitto kono shiai ni katsu to omoimasu.) [slow] きっとこの試合に勝つと思います。 (Kitto kono shiai ni katsu to omoimasu.) [normal] きっとこの試合に勝つと思います。 (Kitto kono shiai ni katsu to omoimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: きっとこの試合に勝つと思います。 (Kitto kono shiai ni katsu to omoimasu.)
REVIEW
John: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
John: "I'm sure I can make it."
[pause]
Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
John: "I'm sure it'll be alright."
[pause]
Risa: きっと大丈夫だと思います。 (Kitto daijōbu da to omoimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: きっと大丈夫だと思います。 (Kitto daijōbu da to omoimasu.)

Outro

John: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for expressing certainty, as in...
Risa: きっと間に合うと思います。 (Kitto ma ni au to omoimasu.)
John: meaning "I'm sure I can make it."
John: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on JapanesePod101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
