| John: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing your hope for something. |
| PATTERN |
| John: For example, |
| John: "I hope it will be sunny tomorrow." |
| Risa: 明日晴れるといいですね。 (Ashita hareru to ii desu ne.) |
| Risa: [slow] 明日晴れるといいですね。 (Ashita hareru to ii desu ne.) |
| John: The pattern for expressing your hope for something has four elements. First, an informal sentence that expresses what you hope, meaning "It will be sunny tomorrow." |
| Risa: 明日晴れる (Ashita hareru). |
| John: Second, a quotation marker, |
| Risa: と (to). |
| John: Third, the adjective meaning "good" followed by a linking verb, |
| Risa: いいです (ii desu). |
| John: And last, a sentence-ending particle, acting as a tag question, for example "~right?". |
| Risa: ね (ne). |
| John: Altogether, we have... "I hope it will be sunny tomorrow." |
| Risa: 明日晴れるといいですね。 (Ashita hareru to ii desu ne.) [slow] 明日晴れるといいですね。 (Ashita hareru to ii desu ne.) [normal] 明日晴れるといいですね。 (Ashita hareru to ii desu ne.) |
| John: The sentence pattern for saying "I hope that..." in Japanese is a sentence that expresses what you hope in the informal non-past tense plus the quotation marker |
| Risa: と (to), |
| John: followed by the adjective meaning "good" and a linking verb |
| Risa: いいです (ii desu). |
| John: And finally, a sentence-ending particle, acting as a tag question (as in, "~right?"). |
| Risa: ね (ne). |
| John: So "I hope it will be sunny tomorrow." would be |
| Risa: 明日晴れるといいですね。 (Ashita hareru to ii desu ne.) |
| John: So, to express hope for something, remember to first say what you hope, in an informal non-past sentence, plus |
| Risa: と (to), |
| John: and at the end |
| Risa: いいですね (ii desune). |
| John: Here is another example meaning, "I hope it goes well." First, an informal sentence, meaning "It goes well." |
| Risa: うまくいく (Umaku iku). |
| John: Second, a quotation marker, |
| Risa: と (to). |
| John: Third, the adjective meaning "good" plus a linking verb, |
| Risa: いいです (ii desu). |
| John: And last, a sentence-ending particle, acting as a tag question. |
| Risa: ね (ne). |
