| John: The pattern for apologizing for doing something has two elements. First, the -te form of the verb meaning "to be late" . |

| John: Second, a phrase meaning "I'm sorry.” |
| Risa: すみません (sumimasen). |
| John: Altogether, we have... "I'm sorry for being late." |
