INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 22. Expressing Opinions.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing an opinion.
PATTERN
Eric: For example, "I think that it's difficult."
Risa: それはむずかしいと思います。 (Sore wa muzukashii to omoimasu.)
Risa: [slow] それはむずかしいと思います。 (Sore wa muzukashii to omoimasu.)
Eric: The pattern for expressing opinions has 3 elements. First, a sentence in informal form meaning "it's difficult."
Risa: それはむずかしい (Sore wa muzukashii).
Eric: Second, quotation marker.
Risa: と (to).
Eric: And last, verb meaning "to think."
Risa: 思います (omoimasu).
Eric: Altogether, we have, "I think that it's difficult."
Risa: それはむずかしいと思います。 (Sore wa muzukashii to omoimasu.) [slow] それはむずかしいと思います。 (Sore wa muzukashii to omoimasu.) [normal] それはむずかしいと思います。 (Sore wa muzukashii to omoimasu.)
Eric: To say “I think that ~” in Japanese, first state your opinion or thought in the informal form,
Risa: それはむずかしい (sore wa muzukashii)
Eric: then add the quotation particle,
Risa: と (to)
Eric: plus
Risa: 思います (omoimasu).
Risa: それはむずかしいと思います。 (Sore wa muzukashii to omoimasu.)
Eric: So remember to say "I think that~", first say a statement in the informal form, then add
Risa: と思います(to omoimasu).
Eric: Here’s another example meaning, "I think it's good." First, a shortened version of an informal sentence meaning "it's good."
Risa: それはいい (Ii) (Sore wa ii).
Eric: Second, quotation marker.
Risa: と (to).
Eric: Third, verb meaning "to think."
Risa: 思います (omoimasu).
Eric: Altogether, we have...
Risa: それはいいと思います。 (Sore wa ii to omoimasu.) [slow] それはいいと思います。 (Sore wa ii to omoimasu.) [normal] それはいいと思います。 (Sore wa ii to omoimasu.)
Eric: It’s also good to remember that people often omit the subject part and just say
Risa:いいと思います。(Ii to omoimasu.)
Eric: "I think it's good."
[pause]
Risa: いいと思います。 (Ii to omoimasu.)
Eric: How do you say, "I think it's going to rain tomorrow?" To give you a hint, "it's going to rain" is...
Risa: 雨が降る (ame ga furu). [slow] 雨が降る (ame ga furu). [normal] 雨が降る (ame ga furu).
Eric: "I think it's going to rain tomorrow."
[pause]
Risa: 明日は雨が降ると思います。 (Ashita wa ame ga furu to omoimasu.) [slow] 明日は雨が降ると思います。 (Ashita wa ame ga furu to omoimasu.) [normal] 明日は雨が降ると思います。 (Ashita wa ame ga furu to omoimasu.)
[pause]
Risa: 明日は雨が降ると思います。 (Ashita wa ame ga furu to omoimasu.)

Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I’ll give you the English equivalent of the phrase, and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
