INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Risa: And I'm Risa.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Japanese Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 13. Proposing something.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for proposing something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "Shall I help you?"
Risa: 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
Risa: [slow] 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
Eric: The pattern for proposing something has 3 elements. First, the masu-stem of the verb "to help".
Risa: 手伝い (Tetsudai-).
Eric: Second, the volitional verb ending.
Risa: ましょう (mashō).
Eric: Third, the question marker.
Risa: か (ka).
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "Shall I help you?"
Risa: 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.) [slow] 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.) [normal] 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
Eric: In the last lesson, you learned how to make a suggestion. To make a proposal, all we have to do is add the question marker
Risa: か (ka)
Eric: to the end of the suggestion. To ask “Shall I do [something]?” in Japanese, you can just say a verb or verb phrase with the mashō ending and add a question marker ka at the end of the phrase.
Risa: 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
Eric: So remember that to propose something, just say the verb or verb phrase with the masu-stem of the verb, connected with mashō and then add the question marker ka at the end.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Shall we go?" First, the masu-stem of the verb "to go".
Risa: 行き (Iki-).
Eric: Second, the volitional verb ending.
Risa: ましょう (mashō).
Eric: Third, the question marker.
Risa: か (ka).
Eric: Altogether we have..
Risa: 行きましょうか。 (Ikimashō ka.) [slow] 行きましょうか。 (Ikimashō ka.) [normal] 行きましょうか。 (Ikimashō ka.)
Eric: "Shall we go?"
[pause]
Risa: 行きましょうか。 (Ikimashō ka.)
Eric: How do you say - "Where shall we go?" To give you a hint, "where" is..
Risa: どこ (doko). [slow] どこ (doko). [normal] どこ (doko).
Eric: "Where shall we go?"
[pause]
Risa: どこに行きましょうか。 (Doko ni ikimashō ka.) [slow] どこに行きましょうか。 (Doko ni ikimashō ka.) [normal] どこに行きましょうか。 (Doko ni ikimashō ka.)
[pause]
Risa: どこに行きましょうか。 (Doko ni ikimashō ka.)
REVIEW
Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Japanese. Here we go.
Eric: "Shall I help you?"
[pause]
Risa: 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
[pause]
Risa: 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
Eric: "Shall we go?"
[pause]
Risa: 行きましょうか。 (Ikimashō ka.)
[pause]
Risa: 行きましょうか。 (Ikimashō ka.)
Eric: "Where shall we go?"
[pause]
Risa: どこに行きましょうか。 (Doko ni ikimashō ka.)
[pause]
Risa: どこに行きましょうか。 (Doko ni ikimashō ka.)

Outro

Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for proposing something, as in..
Risa: 手伝いましょうか。 (Tetsudaimashō ka.)
Eric: meaning "Shall I help you?"
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on JapanesePod101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time!
