Chris: Chris here, You're Just About to Learn More Japanese!
Chris: このレッスンでは何を勉強しますか。
Naomi: 「ところ」という言葉の使い方を勉強します。
Chris: By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to say sentences like "I'm just about to do something," "I'm just now doing something" and "I've just done something." in Japanese.
Naomi: 今回の会話では。店員さんと店長が話しています。
Chris: In the dialogue, we have a store clerk and a store manager.
Naomi: 店員さんは丁寧に、店長はカジュアルに話しています。二人はピザについて話しているみたいです。
Chris: The store clerk is speaking formally but the store manager is speaking informally. It seems like they're talking about pizza.
Naomi: どんなお店なのでしょうね。では、聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Please listen to the conversation and find out what kind of store it is.

Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
野沢奈味: 20分位前に、ペパロニピザを3枚注文した野沢ですけど...まだですか。
Chris: This is Nozawa. Twenty minutes ago I ordered three pepperoni pizzas... are they ready yet?
店員: 申し訳ございません。今作っているところなので、もう少しお待ちください。
Chris: I'm very sorry. We're in the middle of making them, so please wait a little while longer.
Chris: Manager, are the pizzas ready?
店員: 店長、ピザできましたか?
Chris: I've just read the recipe.
店長: 今、レシピ本を読んだところなんだ。
Chris: I'm just about to make the dough now, so it'll still take a while.
: 今から生地を作るところだから、もう少し時間がかかるなぁ。
Chris: Alright, so...mix together three hundred grams of flour and two hundred cubic centimeters (cc) of water...
: さてと、小麦粉300gとお湯200ccを混ぜて・・・。
Chris: By the way, Manager, what's pepperoni?
店員: ところで、店長、ペパロ二って何ですか。
Chris: Something related to macaroni, I think.
店長: マカロニの親戚だろ。
Chris: Manager, I'm impressed! But...this is the first time we've gotten a pizza order, isn't it.
店員: さすが店長。でも、初めてピザの注文が来ましたね。
Chris: Yeah, you're right... Well, we ARE originally a soba shop, so...
店長: そうだな、そもそも、うちはそば屋だからな。
Chris: Yes, hello? Oh, I'm sorry. They've just left the shop. Please wait a little while longer.
店員: あ、もしもし?あ、すみません。今、お店を出たところなんです。もう少しお待ちください。
Chris: Manager, please hurry!
店員: 店長、急いでください。
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: あ・・・、このお店はピザ屋じゃなくて、蕎麦屋ですね。
Naomi: ナミさんが間違えて、お蕎麦屋さんに、ピザを注文しちゃったんですね。
Chris: So Nami called a soba-ya or buckwheat noodle place to order pizza. ただの間違い電話なのに・・・。わざわざ作ってあげてやさしいですね。間違い電話 is "calling a wrong number by mistake"
Naomi: お客さんがいなくて暇だったんですかね~。
Chris: そうかもしれないですね。
Naomi: ところで、Chrisさんはよくピザを頼みますか。
Chris: え~、そんな頼まないかもしれないですね。日本では結構高いので。
Naomi: あー、高いですね。
Chris: たまにしか頼まないですね。ナオミ先生、あの、日本人がよく、ピザのトッピングとして、マヨネーズとかツナとかコーンを使ったりしますよね。Japanese often have like tuna and mayonnaise and corn as toppings.
Naomi: I like it!
Chris: You like it?!
Naomi: 好きです。大好きです。
Chris: アメリカ人にはちょっと分からないかもしれない。
Naomi: そうですよね~。
Chris: It’s hard for Americans to deal with that kind of toppings.
Naomi: そう。コーンとか、変だって言いますよね、みんなね。
Chris: うーん、そうですね。
Naomi: リスナーの皆さん は、どんなピザが好きですか。ぜひ教えてください。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. では、単語やフレーズを勉強しましょう。最初はなんですか?
Naomi: そもそも
Chris: in the first place, to begin with, original
Naomi: 「もともと」 は知っていますか?
Chris: Do you know the expression もともと meaning "originally"?
Naomi: 「そもそも」は「もともと」とほとんど同じですね。
Chris: So can we use somosomo and motomoto interchangeably? 例文お願いします。
Naomi: そもそも、うちはそば屋だからな。
Chris: "trans."
日本語はこういう言葉多いですね。「もともと」とか「山々」とか「人々」とか「ときどき」とか・・・。
Naomi: そうですね。英語だとなんていうんですか?「Reduplication」って言うんですかね?
Chris: Sure, reduplication would be the grammatical term. (any other ways to say it?)
Naomi: 繰りかえす言葉が多いですね。
Chris: 音がかわいいから覚えやすいですね。
次はなんですか?What are we looking at next?
Naomi: 「屋」 例えば、肉屋、魚屋、パン屋 の「屋」 Suffix ですね。
Chris: Right. 屋 is a suffix meaning "store", "shop" or "merchant".
So 肉屋 is a butcher, 魚屋 is a fish shop, and パン屋 is a bakery.
Naomi: この「屋」を使って、人の性格を言うことも出来ます。
Chris: We can also use 屋 to describe a person's nature or characteristics.
Naomi: 例えば、気分 is
Chris: mood or temper
Naomi: 気分屋
Chris: moody person, temperamental person
Naomi: 照れ is
Chris: bashfulness
Naomi: So 照れ屋 is
Chris: Someone who is bashful or shy 例文お願いします。
Naomi: 僕の姉は、気分屋だ。
Chris: My sister is a moody person.
Naomi: 気分屋は、まあ、いい意味では使われないですね~。悪い意味です。
Chris: 英語の moodyと同じですね。でも、日本語だと、ムーディー って、いい意味ですよね。
Naomi: ああ、日本語英語ですね~。日本語のムーディーは人には使わないで、音楽とか場所に使います。「雰囲気がいい」という意味ですね
「ムーディーなお店」 というと、雰囲気がいいお店。
Chris: So if you say ムーディーなお店 it doesn't mean the staff at that shop are moody or anything. It just means the shop has a nice ambiance.
Naomi: ちょっと、明かりが暗くて、カップルがおおい。ロマンチックなお店・・・というイメージですね。
Chris: なるほど。So this Japanese-English word ムーディー has a bit of a romantic connotation.

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn Three Different Ways to Use ところ
Naomi: 今から3つ文を読みます。違いがわかりますか?
Chris: Naomi is going to read three sentences. See if you can tell the difference. OK. The first sentence, please.
Naomi: お昼ごはんを作るところ。
Chris: The second sentence, please.
Naomi: お昼ごはんを作っているところ。
Chris: The third sentence is?
Naomi: お昼ごはんを作ったところ。
Chris: How was it? Were you able to tell the difference? If not, stay tuned, you'll be able to tell the difference by the end of this lesson.
Naomi: 動詞の形だけが違いますよね。
Chris: Right. If you compare those three sentences, the only difference is the verb form right before ところ. OK. Naomi-sensei, can you read the first sentence, again?
Naomi: お昼ごはんを作るところ。
Chris: "I'm about to make lunch."
Naomi: つくる ・ところ
Chris: Right. Dictionary form of a verb plus tokoro.
This is translated as "to be just about to..."
Naomi: そうですね。まだ、作っていません。じゃ、例えば、「お昼ごはんを食べるところ」は?
Chris: "I'm about to eat lunch"
Chris: Let's look at the second sentence.
Naomi: お昼ごはんを作っているところ。
Chris: "I'm just (now) making lunch."
Naomi: つくっている・ところ
Chris: Present progressive form of a verb plus ところ。
This is translated as "be in the middle of..."
Naomi: 「今作っています。」という意味です。 じゃ、「お昼ご飯を食べているところ」は?
Chris: "I'm just now eating lunch."
Chris: How about the third sentence?
Naomi: お昼ごはんを作ったところです。
Chris: "I've just made lunch."
Naomi: つくった・ところ
Chris: Informal past form or ta-form of a verb plus ところ means "have just done..."
Naomi: 「もう作りました」という意味です。じゃ、「お昼ご飯を食べたところ」は?
Chris: "I've just had lunch."
Chris: OK. Let's recap with a quiz. I'm going to give you a situation. Your job is to create an appropriate sentence to fit the situation. Are you ready?
Here's a situation. Your phone rings when you're about to get on an airplane. It's from your boss, so you should answer - but at the same time, you don't want to miss the flight.
Chris: Naomi-sensei, how would you explain the situation to your boss? What would you say?
Naomi: 「もしもし、すみません。今から飛行機に乗るところなんです。また、あとで電話します。」
Chris: "Hello? I'm sorry, I'm just about to get on the plane. I will call you back later."
Chris: Here's the next situation. You got a phone call from your friend when you're in the middle of frying tempura. You want to tell your friend you'll call him or her back.
Chris: Naomi-sensei, what would you say if you were in this situation?
Naomi: 「もしもし、ごめん。今、料理を作っているところなんだ。また、後で電話するね。」
Chris: "Hello? Sorry, I'm in the middle of cooking right now. I'll call you back later, okay?"
Can we say てんぷらを作っているところ?
Naomi: そうですね。わかると思います。でも、「てんぷらを揚げているところ」の方がいいですね。
Chris: てんぷらを揚げている ところ? なるほど~ あげている is from the verb あげる "to fry", right?
Naomi: そうですね。
Chris: Speaking of tempura... てんぷら食べたいですね。レコーディングの後に行きませんか?
Naomi: いいですね。でも、私、ダイエットしているところなので・・・ごめんなさい。
Chris: ダイエット中ですか・・・。明日からにしませんか?
Naomi: そうですね~。そうしようかな。じゃ、行きます。クリスさんと、てんぷらを食べに行くので、このレッスンはこの辺で。
Chris: Great! Thanks for listening, everyone! See you in the next lesson.
Naomi: じゃ、また。
