Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
野沢菜味: いいなぁ。やっぱり、犬、欲しいなぁ。
Chris: Lucky... I definitely want a dog.
: 体重は1キロ位?
Chris: What does he weigh, about one kilogram?
大葉桜子: うん。今、800グラム位かな。
Chris: Yeah. He's about eight hundred grams at the moment.
那須実: 何才?
Chris: How old is he?
大葉桜子: 何才かわからないの。捨て犬だったんだ。
Chris: I don't know how old he is. He was abandoned.
: 寒がっていたし、かわいそうだから、拾って来たんだ。
Chris: He looked cold and I felt sorry for him, so I picked him up and brought him home.
那須実: この犬・・・足、どうしたの?痛そう。
Chris: This dog...what's wrong with his leg? It looks sore.
大葉桜子: 痛がっているんだよね。明日、獣医さんに連れて行くんだ。
Chris: He looks like he's in pain, doesn't he? I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow.
野沢菜味: 犬を捨てる無責任な人がいるんだ…。許せない。
Chris: There are irresponsible people out there who would abandon a dog. It's unforgivable.
: あ、外に出たがってる。
Chris: Oh, he wants to go outside.
那須実: 違うよ。えさを欲しがっているんだよ。
Chris: No, he wants some food.
桜子の母: みなさん、いらっしゃい。
Chris: Everyone, welcome.
菜味: お邪魔しています。
Chris: Please excuse us.
桜子の母: はい、紅茶とケーキ。
Chris: Here you are, tea and cake.
那須実: どうぞ、お構いなく。(グー)あ・・・。
Chris: Please don't trouble yourself. (stomach rumbling) Ah...
桜子の母: 遠慮しないでいいのよ。若いんだから。
Chris: Go on, you don't have to be polite. You're young!
那須実: すみません。じゃ、遠慮なくいただきます。
Chris: Thank you. Alright, I'll help myself.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: かわいそうですよね。この犬は、「捨て犬」なんですよね。
Chris: 捨て犬。Abandoned dog. でも、日本はそんなに捨て犬とか捨て猫とか、見ないですよね。
Naomi: 東京だと、確かに見ないですね。でも、実は結構いるんですよね。
Chris: あー、そうですか。
Naomi: で、ボランティアで世話をする人もいます。捨て犬とかね、捨て猫とかを。アメリカはどうですか。
Chris: アメリカは、まぁ、街によると思うんですけど、やっぱり大きい街だと結構いると思いますね。結構見ます。
Naomi:あぁ、そうですか。
Chris: Yeah, you see a lot more abandoned animals I think in a big city than you would see in smaller towns.
Naomi: ね、ちょっと悲しいですよね。
Chris: そうですね。
Naomi: ところで、会話の中で「犬の体重1キロ」って言ってましたよね。1キロって何ポンドになるんですか。
Chris: How many pounds is 1 kilo? Well, 1 pound is 450 grams. So, it’s a little more than 2 pounds.
Naomi: あー、じゃあ2ポンドぐらいの犬、ってことですね。
Chris: そうですね。
Naomi: クリスさんは、「グラム」とか「センチ」とか「度」とか、日本の単位っていうのはもちろん分かりますよね?
Chris: My familiar used units in Japan is like “gram”, “centimeters” and “centigrade.” うーん、分かりますけども、やっぱりまだちょっと考えなきゃすぐ分からないことが多いですね。
Naomi: そうですよね。例えば、私も英語を話してると「フィート」とか「ポンド」とか言われると、なんかちょっと考えないと分からないんですよね。
Chris: そうですよね。You have to make a translation in your head for “feet” and these kinds of things.
Naomi: そう、それから ”Fahrenheit” と “Celsius”。
Chris: そうですね。The difference between “Fahrenheit” and “Celsius.” うーん、難しいですね。
Naomi: 「今日は100度ぐらいです」って言われても、「何度だ?暑いのか、寒いのか?」みたいな。
Chris: そうですね。燃えちゃいそうです。
Naomi: ああ、そうですね。“Celsius”だと、燃えちゃいますね。
Chris: そうですね。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: 友達のうちに行くときに便利なフレーズを2つ勉強しましょう。
Chris: Let's take a look at some useful expressions for visiting someone’s house
最初のフレーズお願いします。
Naomi: 遠慮しないで。
Chris: Please don't hesitate. Don't hold back. 遠慮する means “to hesitate”, so this phrase えんりょしないで or えんりょしないでください is used by the host to tell their guest not to hesitate.
Naomi: コーヒーとか、紅茶とかを出すときによく言います。「遠慮しないでくださいね~」
Chris: Right, [遠慮しないで」is used usually when offering something to eat or drink. Hmmm, I think it might be a bit similar to "Please, help yourself" in English.
Naomi: そうですか。
Chris: And when you're about to eat or drink what is offered you say...
Naomi: じゃ、遠慮なくいただきます。
Chris: Enryo naku means “without reserve.”いただきます means "I'm going to receive." So literally means "I'm going to receive this without reserve."
Naomi: 例えば、こんな感じです。私はオフィスでチョコレートを配っています。
Chris: Here's a situation. Naomi is giving everyone chocolate.
Naomi: クリスさん、チョコレートいかがですか?甘いもの好きですよね。
Chris: あ・・・でも、最後の一個ですね・・・。
Naomi: 大丈夫、遠慮しないで。まだあるから。
Chris: そうですか?じゃ、遠慮なくいただきます。
Chris: Did you get the meaning? Naomi said...
Naomi: クリスさん、チョコレートいかがですか?"Chris, would you like some chocolate?"甘いもの好きですよね。"I know you love sweets."
Chris: But I said...
Naomi: でも、最後の一個ですね・・・"But, it's the last one."
Chris: And Naomi said
Naomi: 大丈夫、遠慮しないで。"It's OK.Don't hesitate. "まだあるから。"I have more."
Chris: So I said
Naomi: そうですか?"Is that right?" じゃ、遠慮なくいただきます。"In that case, I'll take it."
Chris: 日本人の人はよく遠慮しますよね。
Naomi: そうですね。多分それがマナーでもあると思います。
Chirs: So you'd consider it a way of showing respect/being polite...?
Naomi: はい。あ、人にも場合にもよりますけどね。
Chris: Of course it depends on the person and situation.

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to say“he feels cold” or “she feels sad" using –garu in Japanese. Naomi-sensei, how do you say "I feel cold."
Naomi: 私は寒い
Chris: "Tom feels cold"
Naomi: トムは寒がる
Chris: How about "I feel scared"
Naomi: 私はこわい
Chris: "Tom feels scared" is?
Naomi: トムは怖がる
Chris: Did you notice that がる is used in the second examples where we talk about someone else? In Japanese, when talking about someone's psychological and physiological feeling or condition, we use garu meaning "show signs of". How do we use this?
Naomi: For i adjectives, drop the final "i" and add がる.
Chris: Let's give an example. How do we say "painful"?
Naomi: 痛い
Chris: Drop the final "i"
Naomi: いた
Chris: Add がる to it
Naomi: 痛がる
Chris: "To show signs of pain." Sample sentence, please.
Naomi: 父は歯を痛がっている。
Chris: "My father has a toothache."
There are two things you have to keep in mind. First, when talking about current situations, がる is usually in its present progressive form, which is がっている.
Naomi: Right. Not 痛がる but 痛がっている
Chris: Secondly, the particle ga was replaced with the particle o in sentences that describe a third person’s feelings.
Naomi: Right, for example, I have a toothache is 私は歯がいたい。
Chris: Here は tooth is marked by the particle が
Naomi: But my father has a toothache is 父は歯を痛がっている。
Chris: In this sentence, は is marked by the particle を
OK. Listen and repeat after Naomi. "My father has a toothache."
Naomi: (pause)父は歯を痛がっている。
Chris: OK. Listeners, it's your turn. How do you say "My mother has a headache."?
(Pause) Here's a hint. "To have a headache" is
Naomi: 頭が痛い
Chris: Since the subject is "My mother" you have to replace が with を....So,
Naomi: 母は頭を痛がっている。
Chris: Literally, "My mother is showing signs of a headache" or "My mother has a headache."
Chris: Let's do one more. Naomi-sensei, do you have anything that you want?
何か今欲しいものがありますか?
Naomi: 私は新しい車が欲しい。
Chris: OK. So you want a new car. Listeners, say, "Naomi wants a new car."
Chris: Were you able to say that? That should be 直美先生は新しい車を欲しがっている or 直美先生は新しい車を欲しがっています。
Naomi: クリスさんはどうですか。欲しいものありますか?
Chris: うーん。僕はヨーロッパの旅行のチケットが欲しいですね。
Naomi: じゃ、皆さん、今の文章を言ってください。クリスさんは。。。
Chris: If you said,
Naomi: クリスさんはヨーロッパの旅行のチケットを欲しがっている.
Chris: you're correct.
Naomi: 皆さんのお友達、ご家族、パートナーは何を欲しがっていますか?是非教えてください。
Chris: What do your friends, family members or partner want? Let us know in the comments.
