INTRODUCTION
Naomi: ナオミです。
Chris: Chris here, Improve Your Formal Japanese Writing. このレッスンでは何を勉強しますか。
Naomi: 書き言葉
Chris: “written language”
Naomi: を勉強します。特にcopula の「である」を勉強します。
Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn the usage of the "de aru" form, which is often used in formal writing.
Naomi: このレッスンのダイアログでは先生と生徒が話しています。
Chris: This conversation is between Mr. Momoya and his students.
Naomi: 国語の授業中みたいです。
Chris: So this conversation takes place during Japanese lessons.
Naomi: では聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
桃屋先生: 質問ありますか。
Chris: Are there any questions?
大葉桜子: はい。常用漢字って最近増えましたよね。
Chris: Yes. Recently, the number of standard-use kanji has increased, right?
: 増えた漢字は覚えなくちゃいけないんですか。
Chris: Do we have to learn the new kanji?
那須実: 先生、常用漢字って何ですか?
Chris: Teacher, what are standard-use kanji?
桃屋先生: 自分で辞書を調べなさい。
Chris: Look it up yourself in the dictionary, please.
那須実: …はい。
Chris: ... All right.
: 「常用漢字とは、日常生活に必要な2136字の漢字である。
Chris: "The standard-use kanji are the 2136 characters necessary for everyday life.
: 新聞や雑誌等で使う漢字の目安になっている。」
Chris: They are the characters deemed suitable for use in newspapers, magazines, etc."
桃屋先生: そう。新聞や雑誌では、常用漢字じゃない漢字にふりがなをつけるのがルールなんだ。
Chris: That's right. There's a rule that characters which are not standard-use kanji must have their phonetic readings printed above them in newspapers and magazines and things.
大葉桜子: どうして常用漢字が増えたんですか?
Chris: Why did the number of standard-use kanji increase?
桃屋先生: みんなは、パソコンや携帯を使うだろう?
Chris: Everyone uses computers and mobile phones and things, right?
: ボタンを押すと、漢字を選ぶことができるね。
Chris: Press a button and you can choose the kanji, can't you?
: だから、難しい漢字も日常生活の中で使われるようになったんだ。
Chris: So even difficult kanji have begun to be used in everyday life.
: 「常用漢字すべてを書ける必要はない」と言われている。
Chris: It's said that you don't have to be able to write all of the standard-use kanji.
: でも、読めなくちゃだめだよ。
Chris: But you have to be able to read them!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: 常用漢字って2136もあるんですね。僕が勉強したときは1900くらいでしたけど。Naomi
Chris: So about 200 kanji were added to the official list of standard-use kanji in 2010.
Naomi: 常用漢字は英語でいうとなに?Standard-use Kanji?
Chris: Yeah, or sometimes it's translated as 'kanji for common use'.
常用 という 言葉は難しいですね。
Naomi: あ~そうですね。常用は「いつも使う」と言う意味です。
Chris: Jōyō means "habitual use" or "daily use" and kanji of course means "kanji" or "Chinese characters".
Naomi:
Naomi: あー、じゃぁコンピューターでチェックして。
Chris: コンピューターでチェックして。しないとちょっとひどいですね。
Naomi: は~、なるほどね。コンピューターは便利なんですけどね。だんだんね、razy になっていきますね。
Chris: できなくなっちゃいますね。
Naomi: では、単語を勉強して行きましょう。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 最初の単語は何ですか?What's the first word we'll be looking at?
Naomi: 押す
Chris: "to press", "to push"
Naomi: 例えば、ドアを押す。
Chris: "to push open the door"
Naomi: 押す の 反対の言葉は、「引く」です。
Chris: The opposite word is "hiku" meaning "to pull".
あの・・・dating strategy で、何でしたっけ・・・「押してもだめだったら引いて・・・」とかありませんか?
Naomi: ああ、「押してもだめなら引いてみろ」If push doesn't work then pull. ですかね?
Chris: あ~そうです。
Naomi: 例えば、くりすさんが、誰かのことを好きで、『好きだ』『好きだ』といつも言っています、でもその人は、あまりクリスさんに興味がない。
Chris: それは悲しい。
Naomi: そう。でも、そういうときには、もう「好きだ」といわないで、興味がないフリをしたほうがいいですよ。・・・と言うアドバイスです。英語に似た言葉はないですか?
Chris: "You sometimes have to play it cool", or something like that, maybe?
Chris: 次の単語はなんですか。
Naomi: 日常生活
Chris: Daily life
Nichijō is "ordinary", "regular", or "usual" and seikatsu is "life" or "livelihood".
Naomi: 毎日の生活 とか、普通の生活 と言う意味ですね。
Chris: This word にちじょうせいかつ can be rephrased as "mainichi no seikatsu", "everyday life", or "futsū no seikatsu", "normal life" in easier Japanese.
Naomi: 日常"everyday life"の後ろに会話 "conversation"をつければ、日常会話
Chris: "Daily conversation"
Naomi: 日常会話ではあまり使いませんが、書き言葉でよく使う「ーである」 を勉強しましょう。
Chris: On to the grammar section!

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn the usage of the "de aru" form which is often used in formal writing.
Naomi: 「である」 は copula です。書くときに使います。
Chris: Right. In essays or reports, such as research papers or theses, for example, the copula "de aru" is often used. This copula carries conviction, and sounds expository and sometimes authoritative.
Naomi: 今から3つ文を読みます。どれも同じ意味です。ニュアンスの違いがわかりますか。
Chris: Naomi is going to read three sentences which carry the same meaning but which are slightly different in nuance. Can you tell the difference?
Naomi: 1) 小原さんは日本人です。
2)小原さんは日本人だ。
3)小原さんは日本人である。
Chris: Now all of these sentences mean "Mr./Ms. Ohara is Japanese." You can probably tell the difference between
Naomi: 小原さんは日本人です
Chris: and
Naomi: 小原さんは日本だ。
です の 方が丁寧ですね。
Chris: Right. Generally speaking, -desu sentences are used in formal conversations or letters, emails or memos addressing someone whom you should respect.
Naomi: だ の方がカジュアルです。
Chris: -Da sentences generally appear in informal conversations among friends or family members.
Naomi: じゃあ、小原さんは日本人である は?
Chris: Now, -de aru sentences are typically used in formal writing such as essays, thesis, newspaper articles, novels and so on.
Naomi: でも、「である」はあまり日常会話では使いませんね。
Chris: Right. We don't recommend that you use this form in everyday e-mail or letters. You should stick to using the copulas -desu and -da in normal conversations.
Naomi: 「である」は 書くときだけに使います。じゃ、今から私が文を言います。皆さんは「である」を使って言い直してください。
Chris: Naomi's going to say a -da or -desu sentence. Your job is to rephrase that sentence using "-de aru".
Naomi: 1ガロンは4リットルだ。
Chris: "One gallon is four litres." Now listeners, replace だ with である.
(Pause) Listeners, if you said...
Naomi: 1ガロンは4リットルである。
Chris: Then, you were right. Let's do one more. If you're talking to someone politely, you would say...
Naomi: カーナビは便利です
Chris: "Car navigation systems are useful." However, if you're writing an essay or novel, you'd write...
Naomi: カーナビは便利である.
Chris: じゃ、ダイアログの文章を読んでください。
Naomi: 常用漢字とは、日常生活に必要な2136字の漢字である。
Chris: "The standard-use kanji are the 2146 characters necessary for everyday life."
This "to wa" here means "the thing called ---, is..." or "what --- means, is...". This marks the word or phrase is going to be defined. Let's break this sentence down.
Naomi: 常用漢字とは "What 'standard-use kanji' means is" 日常生活に "for daily life"必要な"necessary" 2136字の漢字2146 kanji characters である copula.
Chris: So this literally means "What 'standard-use kanji' means is the 2146 kanji characters necessary for daily life."
Naomi: 「である」を知らなくても、会話は出来ます。でも、エッセイを書いたり読んだりするときには必要です.特にJLPTを受ける人は絶対に知っておいた方がいいです。
Chris: So even if you don't know the 'de aru' copula, of course you can still have conversations, but you'll need it for when you read or write essays in Japanese. Those who are planning to take the JLPT in particular should definitely study -de aru.
Naomi: 頑張ってください。
Chris: はい。That's all the time we have for this lesson. Don't forget to read the detailed write up in the lesson notes. Go to JapanesePod101.com to download the lesson notes for this lesson now.
Naomi: じゃ、また!
Chris: See you.
