Chris: そうです。
Naomi: え~?お店の名前が ”Teriyaki”?
Chris: それを見ますと、「あ、日本食だ」って分かりますよね、アメリカ人。
Naomi: あぁ、そうなんですか。逆にね、日本だと「テリヤキ」っていう名前のレストランは見ないですけどね。
Chris: ないですよね。
Naomi: おもしろいですね。
Chris: えぇ、おもしろいですね。
Chris: このレシピは本物ですか?
Naomi: 本物 lol. はい。本物です。このレシピで作れると思いますよ、
Chris: So this recipe is a real recipe!
Naomi: ネットで見つけて、私はこのレシピでは作ったことがないので、美味しいかどうかはわかりませんけど。
Chris: You found this recipe on the net, but haven't tried it yet, so you're not sure if it's any good... 直美先生・・・無責任ですね。(笑)
Naomi: ええ?
Chris: You're so irresponsible!... I'm just kidding.
Naomi: じゃ、クリスさんがつくって、味見したら?っていうか、クリスさん、料理するんです?
Chris: う~ん、たまにはしますね。簡単なものしか…。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 最初の単語はなんですか?
Naomi: 沸騰
Chris: boiling
Naomi: 動詞 verb は 「沸騰する」です。
Chris: ふっとうする is "to boil" or "to come to the boil".
Naomi: スープが沸騰している。
Chris: The soup is boiling.
Naomi: 英語だと、Water boils って言いますね。でも、日本語だと「水が沸騰する」じゃなくて、普通は「お湯が沸騰する」 hot water boilsというんですよ。
Chris: 面白いですよね。In English we say "water boils", but in Japanese, it's usually literally "hot water boils".
Naomi: そう、気をつけたほうがいいポイントですね。
Chris: でもこれはどうしてですかね。
Naomi: さあ。。。わかりません(笑)
でも、日本語で 水 の意味は「冷たい水」ですからね。水がお湯になって、それから沸騰するから、[お湯が沸騰する」というんですよ、多分。「冷たい水は沸騰しませんからね」意味わかりますかね?
Chris: Ah I see. So when you say mizu - water - in Japanese it means cold water. But cold water doesn't boil, right? I mean mizu - cold water - becomes oyu - hot water - and -then- comes to the boil. I think it makes sense... I think!
Chris: OK. What are we looking at next?
Naomi: 次は、調味料を勉強しましょう。
Chris: So we'll be looking at words for flavoring.
Naomi: まず、「砂糖」
Chris: Sugar
Naomi: 「酢」
Chris: vinegar
Naomi: 「しょうゆ」
Chris: soy sauce
Naomi: soy sauceなんですよね。私、最初soy sauce と聞いたとき、「ショーユソース」と言っていると思っていました。
Chris: 確かに、少し似ていますよね。Soy sauce と しょうゆsauce.(笑)
Naomi: あとは、「塩」覚えていますか?
Chris: Listeners, do you remember the word shio?。。。which means salt.
How do you say pepper?
Naomi: こしょう or ペッパー
Chris: Ketchup?
Naomi: ケチャップ
Chris: mustard?
Naomi: マスタード
Chris: mayonnaise
Naomi: マヨネーズ
これだけ知っていれば大丈夫ですか?他にありますか。
Chris: Yeah, no, I think we're good.
Naomi: じゃ、文法を勉強しましょう。

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn how to say "begin -ing", "keep -ing" and "finish -ing" in Japanese.
Naomi: "To begin" は 「始める」"to keep" は 「続ける」"to finish"は「終わる」
Chris: Please note that those three words はじめる・つづける・おわる follows masu stem of a verb.
Naomi: はい。作り始める "Begin making" 作り続ける "keep making" 作り終わる "finish making"
Chris: Let us show you some examples.
How do you say "to make"?
Naomi: 作る
Chris: the masu form is?
Naomi: つくります
Chris: Drop masu to get masu stem.
Naomi: つくり
Chris: To that attach はじめる
Naomi: 作り始める
Chris: "to begin making"
If you replace 始める with 続ける?
Naomi: つくり続ける
Chris: This means "to keep making." And if you replace with 終わる?
Naomi: つくり終わる
Chris: "to finish making"
OK. Listeners, listen and repeat after Naomi. "I'll start making dinner."
Naomi: 私は夕食を作り始める
Naomi: (pause)では例文です。私は夕食を6時に作り始めて、9時に作り終わりました。
Chris: I started cooking dinner at 6 and finished cooking at 9.
じゃ、3時間も料理し続けたんですね。So this means this person kept cooking for a good 3 hours.
Let's do a few more. How do you say "to write"?
Naomi: 書く
Chris: The masu stem is?
Naomi: 書き
Chris: So "to begin writing" is
Naomi: 書き始める
Chris: "To keep writing" is?
Naomi: 書き続ける
Chris: "To finish writing" is?
Naomi: 書き終わる
Chris: If you started writing an essay at 8 in the morning and finished it at 8 in the evening, how would you say that in Japanese?
Naomi: 朝、八時からエッセイを書き始めて、夜8時に書き終わりました。
Chris: Or you could probably say
You have to keep reading until the end.
Naomi: リスナーの皆さんはどうですか?是非、始める・続ける・終わる を使って例文を作って、コメントで教えてください。
