Chris: You'll learn the phrases like "to make someone smile" and "to make someone cry". この会話は誰と誰の会話ですか?
Naomi: 3人の高校生が学校で話しています。野沢奈味、大葉桜子、那須実 ですね。
Chris: This conversation is between three high school students
Naomi: 友達なので、もちろんカジュアルに話しています。
Chris: Since it's a conversation among friends, they're speaking casually.
Naomi: では聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Please listen in.

Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
野沢菜味: どうして泣いてるの?桜子。
Chris: Why are you crying, Sakurako?
大葉桜子: だって…実君が…。
Chris: Because... Minoru, he...
野沢菜味: こら、実。女の子を泣かせるな。何したのよ。
Chris: Hey, Minoru. Don't make girls cry! What did you do?
那須実: 泣かせたつもりはないんだけど。
Chris: I didn't mean to make her cry.
大葉桜子: 違う、違う…。菜味、心配させてごめん。でも、実君が笑わせるから…。
Chris: No, no... Nami, I'm sorry I made you worry. It's just that Minoru makes me laugh...
那須実: 笑わせたつもりもないんだけど。
Chris: I didn't mean to make her laugh, either.
野沢菜味: なんだ、笑ってたの?驚かせないでよ。
Chris: What, so you were laughing? Don't surprise me like that.
: …実、その頭どうしたの?
Chris... Minoru, what's with that hair?
那須実: 昨日、兄貴の床屋に髪を切りに行ったんだ。
Chris: Well, I went to get my haircut at my older brother's barbershop yesterday.
野沢菜味: ああ、お兄さん、床屋さんだよね。
Chris: Oh, your older brother's a barber, isn't he.
那須実: 最初は楽しく話していたんだけど、野球の話を始めて、怒らせちゃったんだ。
Chris: At first we were having a fun conversation, but then we started talking about baseball, and I made him angry.
: ほら、俺はジャイアンツファンだけど、兄貴はタイガースファンだから。
Chris: Because I'm a Giants fan, you know, but my older brother's a Tigers fan.
野沢菜味: 今年、ジャイアンツ調子いいけど、タイガースは調子悪いからね。
Chris: This year the Giants are in good form, but the Tigers aren't doing so well, are they?
那須実: ああ。で、丸刈りにされて、眉毛もそられた。
Chris: Yeah. So then he went and gave me a buzz cut and shaved my eyebrows off too.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Chris: 直美先生、やっぱり、日本で一番人気のあるスポーツは野球ですか?
Naomi: 多分そうだと思います。でも、今の子供達は、サッカーの方がすきかもしれません。
Chris: You think baseball is the most popular sport in Japan overall, but soccer might be more popular among kids?
Naomi: で、自分の好きなチームが勝つとうれしいですが、負けると、怒るファンはいます。これは、アメリカもいっしょでしょ?
Chris: アメリカだけじゃなくて、イギリスもオーストラリアも、スペインも、イタリアも そういうファンはいると思います(笑) I think that's not just limited to the US - there are fans who get angry in the UK, Australia, Spain, Italy...
Naomi: 実さんのお兄さんが、そのタイプだったんですね。
Chris: So, unfortunately, it seems Minoru's brother was one of those types of people.
Naomi: 丸刈りはかっこいいですけど。。。眉毛をそられるのは困りますね。
Chris: Yeah, a buzz-cut may be cool, but shaved eyebrows doesn't sound good at all. 実さんのおにいさんの床屋には行きたくないですね。(笑)
Naomi: お兄さんはタイガースファンだから、タイガースがかったときに言った方がいいですね。
Chris: そうですね。

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: The first word/phrase we’ll look at is....
Naomi: では単語を勉強しましょう。
Chris: 最初の単語は?What's the first word we'll look at?
Naomi: 床屋
Chris: barber. Tokoya means a barber or a barber shop. There's another word for a hair salon, right?
Naomi: そうですね。美容院。クリスさんは、床屋に行きますか?それとも美容院にいきますか?
Chris: そうですね。友達は美容師なので、美容院へ行きますね。 I have a friend that works at a beauty salon, so I go and have her cut my hair. びよういんやびようしつとは、beauty salon とか hair salon ですね?
Naomi: そうですね。美容院、美容室、両方も使いますね。
Chris: What's the next word?
Naomi: 丸刈り
Chris: buzz cut
Naomi: マルガリータ みたいですよね。 ほら、ピッザマルガリーター。とか カクテルのマルガリータとか。違う?
Chris: (笑)Huh? You're saying it sounds almost like the pizza Margherita, or the cocktail margarita?... well...I don't know about that... Good try though.
Naomi: 覚えやすいでしょ。
Chris: Yeah, that might be a good mnemonic.
So "marugari" is a short-cropped hairstyle, or a buzz cut.
Naomi: 坊主 も buzz cut です。
Chris: The word 坊主meaning 'Buddhist priest' is used to mean buzz-cut too. That's interesting!
あと、bald は「はげ」ですね。
Naomi: そう。「はげ」と「丸刈り」は違いますけどね。
Chris: Yeah, of course, bald and buzz cut are different, but I thought they were related, so it was a good chance to introduce the word はげ, bald!

Lesson focus

Chris: The Focus of This Lesson Is Causative Sentences.
Naomi: Causative は日本語で「使役」です。
じゃ、まず、動詞の使役の形を復習しましょう。
Chris: Good idea. Let's start off by reviewing how to make the causative forms of verbs. Conjugating class 2 and 3 verbs isn't so difficult, so why don't we review only class 1 verbs?
Naomi: はい。いいと思います。クリスさん、 class 1の、ルールお願いします。
Chris: For Class 1 Verbs, add -seru to the -nai form stem. For example, "to laugh" is?
Naomi: 笑う
Chris: The -nai form is?
Naomi: 笑わない
Chris: Drop -nai
Naomi: わらわ
Chris: To that, attach せる
Naomi: わらわ・せる
Chris: わらわせる to make someone smile
Let's do more. "to cry" is?
Naomi: 泣く
Chris: The nai form is?
Naomi: 泣かない
Chris: Dropない and add せる
Naomi: なか・せる
Chris: なかせる "to make someone cry"
How about "to get angry"?
Naomi: 怒る
Chris: -nai form?
Naomi: 怒らない
Chris: Drop -nai
Naomi: おこら
Chris: And add せる
Naomi: おこら・せる
Chris: おこらせる "to make someone angry"
Naomi: そうです。笑う "to laugh" becomes 笑わせる "to make someone laugh"
泣く "to cry" becomes 泣かせる "to make someone cry" 怒る "to get angry" becomes 怒らせる "to make someone angry"
次に文の作り方を勉強しましょう。
Chris: Next, you'll learn how to compose sentences like "I made my brother angry" or "Don't make girls cry." in Japanese.
Naomi: はい。例えば、「私は兄を怒らせる。」
Chris: "I make my brother angry".
Naomi: 兄「を」 怒らせる
Chirs: Did you notice that the brother was marked by particle を? When the verb relates to human emotion, the person who experiences the emotion is marked by the particle を.
Naomi: そうです。じゃ、「私は、兄を泣かせる」は?
Chris: 私は"I"; 兄を "my brother plus particle を"; なかせる "to make someone cry" so..."I make my brother cry"
Naomi: 私はみんなを笑わせる なら?
Chris: 私は "I"; みんなを "everyone plus particle を"; 笑わせる "to make someone laugh". So... I make everyone laugh.
Naomi: そうですね。
Chris: OK. Listeners, listen and repeat. "I always make my brother angry".
Naomi: 私はいつも兄を怒らせる。
Chris: Say "I always make my brother angry" in Japanese.
Naomi: 私はいつも兄を怒らせる
このレッスンのダイアログでは 実君はお兄さんを怒らせましたね。
Chris: Right. In this lesson's dialogue, みのるはお兄さんを怒らせました Minoru made his brother angry.
Naomi: それから、実君は桜子さんを泣かせました。
Chris: And Minoru made Sakurako cry...? Really? He didn't make her cry. He made her laugh.
Naomi: そうですね。泣いていなくて、笑っていました。じゃ、それを日本語で言ってください。
Chris: OK. Listeners, say "Minoru made Sakurako laugh."
Chris: Naomi-sensei, the answer is?
Naomi: 実君は桜子さんを笑わせました
Chris: "Minoru made Sakurako laugh."
Naomi: ところで、クリスさんは、最近誰かを、泣かせたこと、怒らせたことありますか?
Chris: ええー? Have I recently made anyone cry or angry? ないとおもいますね。
Naomi: 本当?
Chris: もしかして、僕は、直美先生を怒らせたり、いらいらさせたりしたことありますか?
Naomi: たぶん・・・ない・・と思います。多分。
Chris: え・・・。多分?
Naomi: うそうそ。(笑)全然ないです。
Chris: よかったです。(笑)
