INTRODUCTION
Naomi: ナオミです。
Chris: Chris here, Are There Monster Parents at This Japanese School?
Chris: 直美先生、このレッスンでは何を勉強しますか。
Naomi: 「使役」という文法を勉強します。
Chris: In this lesson, we're going to introduce a part of grammar called a causative.
Naomi: 例えば、「行かせる」とか「させる」とか。
Chris: Yes. You'll learn how to say "to let/make someone go somewhere" or "to let/make someone do something" in Japanese.
Naomi: 今回の会話は、那須実君のお母さんと桃屋先生が学校で話しています。
Chris: じゃ、お母さんと先生の会話なので、丁寧な会話ですね。
Naomi: そのとおりです。
Chris: So this conversation is between Minoru's mother and Mr. Momoya. Since it's a conversation between a student's mother and a teacher, you'll hear formal Japanese.
Naomi: では聞いてみましょう。
Chris: Let's listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Naomi: 今度は英語の訳と一緒に聞いてみましょう。
お母さん: 那須実の母です。先生、質問があるのですが。
Chris: I'm Minoru Nasu's mother. Teacher, I have a question.
桃屋先生: あ、はい。
Chris: Um, yes?
: (モンスターペアレントか?)
Chris: Could she be a "monster parent?"
お母さん: この学校では生徒に掃除させているんですか。
Chris: At this school, do you make the students do the cleaning?
桃屋先生: ええ、そうですよ。教室やトイレ、庭を掃除させます。
Chris: Yes, we do. We make them clean the classrooms, the toilets, and the garden.
お母さん: 生徒達にたくさん本を読ませるそうですね。
Chris: It seems as if you make the students read a lot of books.
桃屋先生: はい。その後で、感想文も書かせます。
Chris: Yes. Afterward, we get them to write book reports.
お母さん: 生徒に君が代を歌わせると聞きましたが、それは本当ですか。
Chris: I heard that you make the students sing (the Japanese national anthem) "Kimi ga Yo;" is that true?
桃屋先生: ええ。立たせて国歌を歌わせますよ。生徒に国歌を覚えさせるためです。…
Chris: Yes. We make them stand up and sing the national anthem. It's to get them to remember the national anthem...
: お母さん、うちの学校は私立ですからね。もし嫌だったら、公立に行かせてください。
Chris: Madam, our school is a private school. If you don't like it, please send your child to a public school.
お母さん: いえいえ。気に入りました。今後もうちの息子をよろしくお願いします。
Chris: No, no. I like it. Please keep teaching our child!
桃屋先生: はあ…。
Chris: All right...
お母さん: 先生、これ、つまらないものですが、どうぞ。
Chris: Teacher, this is just a little thing, but please accept it.
: じゃ、失礼します。
Chris: Alright, if you'll excuse me.
桃屋先生: 何なんだ?
Chris: What on earth?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: ねえ、クリスさん。モンスターペアレント。。。って英語ですか?Monster parent?
Chris: 違うと思いますね。聞いたことないですね。モンスターペアレントって何ですか。
Naomi: モンスターペアレントは 学校に 自己中心的で 理不尽な 要求をする 親 のことです。
Chris: じこちゅうしんてき で りふじん な ようきゅう・・・むずかしい単語が、たくさんですね・・・(笑)
Naomi: まず、自己中心的 (self-centered) 理不尽な(unreasonable) 要求(request)
Chris: So monster parents means the parent describe a parent who pays excessive care to their child and keeps making self-centered unreasonable requests and/or demands to educational institutions.
Naomi: そうです。
Chris: なるほど。でも、このダイアログのお母さんは、モンスターペアレントじゃないですよね。
Naomi: そうですね。ただ、質問しているだけですもんね~。そういえば、アメリカにはヘリコプターペアレントって言う言葉があると聞きましたけど・・・。
Chris: そうですね、最近の流行り言葉らしいですね、helicopter parents. Apparently it’s a phrase that’s being used these days in English.
Naomi: なるほどね。この「モンスターペアレント」もそう何ですけど、日本にはこういう和製英語 “Japanese English” っておおいですよね~。
Chris: そうですね、例えば「アフターサービス」”customer service,” 「ガソリンスタンド」 “gas station,” 「ゲームセンター、ゲーセン」 “arcade, amusement arcade”...
Chris: たくさんありますよね。
Naomi: Chrisさんは、こういう「和製英語」を聞いた時っていうのはちょっと戸惑いますか。
Chris: そうですね。特にちょっと意味が違う時は「あっ」と思いますね。例えば、”free” はサービスでよく言いますよね。
Naomi:
So, it can be confusing for native English speakers to come to Japan and hear this Japanese-English that sometimes means quite different from original English.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usuge for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. 単語を勉強しましょう。まず最初の単語はなんですか?
Naomi: 生徒
Chris: student. Now, you may have memorized student as 学生. However technically speaking different words for students are used depending on the type of educational establishment to which a student belongs.
Naomi: 生徒は中学校や高校に行きます。学生は大学にいきます。
Chris: So students in junior high school, high school or technical college are called 生徒. How about students in elementary school?
Naomi: 児童
Student は、児童・生徒・学生 です。でも、普通は「学生」で大丈夫だと思います。
Chris: Student is translated in three different ways, but usually 学生 is fine in most situations.
Chris: じゃ、次の単語は何ですか?OK. What do you have next?
Naomi: 私立
Chris: Private, as in "privately-run" or "private school". It's used to describe privately-run, as opposed to public, establishments.
Naomi: そうです。例えば、私立高校
Chris: Private high school.
Naomi: 私立大学
Chris: Private university.
OK. Let's check the opposite word. How do you say "public" as in "public school" or "publicly-run".
Naomi: 公立
Chris: "run by the government", "publicly-run"
Naomi: 例えば、公立高校
Chris: Public high school.
As you may have noticed, both 私立 and 公立 have the same ending 'ritsu' which means "to stand".
Naomi: くりすさんの高校は、私立ですか?公立ですか?
Chris: (Answer in Japanese with English translation)
Naomi: 私は、小学校、中学校 は 公立で、高校・大学は私立でした。

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you'll learn how to say "to make/let someone do something" in Japanese.
Naomi: そうです。「使役」causative を勉強します。
Chris: Causative sentences express the idea that someone makes or allows someone to do something. It corresponds to "make" as in "My parents always make me do my homework", "have" as in "I'll have him call you later", or "let", as in "I'll let you win the game this time" in English.
Naomi: 日本語では、make や have や let はありません。動詞の形を変えます。
Chris: Right. Unlike English, there are no special causative verbs in Japanese equivalent to "make", "have" and "let". Instead, you have to conjugate verbs into their causative forms.
Naomi: じゃ、まず 「動詞の使役の形」の作り方を勉強しましょう。
Chris: Good idea! First of all, let's learn how to make the causative forms of verbs.
For Class 1 Verbs, add -seru to the -nai form stem.
Let us show you some examples. Naomi-sensei, how do you say "to buy"?
Naomi: 買う
Chris: The nai form is?
Naomi: 買わない
Chris: Drop -nai to get the -nai form stem.
Naomi: 買わ
Chris: To that, attach せる
Naomi: かわ・せる 買わせる
Chris: "To make" or "let someone buy". Let's do one more.
How do you say "to read"?
Naomi: 読む
Chris: The -nai form is?
Naomi: よまない
Chris: The -nai form stem is?
Naomi: よま
Chris: To that, attach せる
Naomi: よま・せる 読ませる
Chris: To make or let someone read.
Next, let's learn how to form the causative form of class 2 verbs.
Naomi: Class 2 は 簡単です。最後の「る」を 「させる」 に変えます。
Chris: Right. All you have to do is replace the final る with させる. So 食べる "to eat" becomes
Naomi: 食べさせる
Chris: "To make" or "let someone eat". 寝る, "to sleep" becomes
Naomi: ねさせる
Chris: To make someone sleep.
Lastly, class 3 verb. They are irregular. So you have to memorize these. する "to do" becomes
Naomi: させる
Chris: くる "to come" becomes
Naomi: こさせる
Chris: Next, let's learn how to form causative sentences. Can you give us a sample sentence?
Naomi: 先生は生徒に本を読ませる。
Chris: The teacher makes the students read a book.
Did you notice something? 生徒 was marked by the particle 「に」, wasn't it?
Naomi: 先生は生徒「に」本を読ませる。
Chris: When the verb has an object, the cause, or the person who is performing the action is marked by particle ni. OK. Listen and repeat after Naomi. "The teacher makes the students read a book."
Naomi: 先生は生徒に本を読ませる。
(pause)
Chris: OK. Listeners, it's your turn. I'm going to say a sentence in English. Your job is to translate it into Japanese. Are you ready?
"The mother makes her child eat vegetables."
Naomi: (pause) ヒントです。Mother は お母さん child は こども vegetable は やさい make someone eat は 食べさせる です。
(pause)
Chris: Naomi-sensei, how do you say "The mother makes her child eat vegetables"?
Naomi: お母さんはこどもに野菜をたべさせる。
Chris: Don't forget to mark こども(child) with particle に, since the child is the causee in this sentence.
Naomi: 私の母も、私の弟や私に野菜をたくさん食べさせましたね~。あと、魚も。
Chris: So your mother made you and your brother eat vegetables and fish?
Naomi: そう。体にいいからって。でも、私は、野菜が嫌いだったので、弟に食べさせました。(笑)
Chris: What? And you made your brother eat your vegetables? That's terrible!
Naomi: ですよね~。今は野菜は好きですけど。 クリスさんは兄弟はいますか?
Chris: 兄が一人いますね。
Naomi: お兄さんに、何かさせたことはありますか。
Chris: 逆に僕は兄に、食べさせられたんですね。あの、彼の嫌いなものとか。
Naomi: あー、なるほど。
Chris: はい。Yeah, because I was the younger brother, I was made to eat vegetables by my brother.
Naomi: あー、「食べさせられた」難しい文法ですね。これは後のレッスンで出てくる文法ポイントです。
Chris: We’ll cover ”食べさせられた” in a later lesson.
