: 普通、スズメはネコに食べられてしまいますよね。
Chris: Normally, the sparrows would be eaten up by the cat, wouldn't they?
: でもすぐそこにスズメがいるのに、ネコはスズメを食べないで眠っていますね。
Chris: But even though the sparrows are right beside it, the cat doesn't eat them but sleeps on.
: これは「平和な世界が徳川幕府によって作られた」という意味だと言われています。

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: クリスさんは、日本の歴史に興味がありますか。
Chris: Am I interested in Japanese history?...
Chris: うん、そうですね。最近はあんまり…何も勉強してないんですけれども、高校生の時はすごく好きでした。
Naomi: あ~、そうですか!
Chris: えぇ。時代劇とか。特に、江戸時代の話がすごく好きでしたね。
Naomi: あぁ、なるほど。へ~、すごい。じゃあ、今日のダイアログに出てきた日光は、どうですか。行ったことありますか。
Chris: そうですね。日光は多分二回ぐらい行ったことがあると思うんですけれども。
Naomi: そうなんですね。
Chris: えぇ、結構昔なんですけども。
Naomi: はい。やっぱり、東照宮とか行ったんですか。
Chris: そうですね。行きました!えぇ。あの、すごく時代を感じる場所なので、素敵でしたね。
Naomi: 猫を見たかどうかは、覚えてないですか。
Chris: 見た記憶があります。
Chris: あの・・・有名なフレーズがありますよね。
日光 ナントカ 結構 ナントカ。(笑)Nikkou something Kekkou something.(笑)
Naomi: (笑)あああ、「日光を見るまで結構と言うな?」
Chris: Yes, that's it! 日光を・・・(笑)なんでしたっけ?
Naomi: あ、もちろん 他のバージョンはたくさんありますけど、一番わかりやすいのは、「日光を見るまで、結構というな」
Chris: 日光を見るまで Until you see Nikkou, 結構というな Don't say kekkou.
Naomi: 結構は 「fine, enough」という意味ですね。
Chris: Right. If I translated it as "Don't say "that's enough" until you see Nikkou.", I'd lose the rhyme, though.
Naomi: あ、そうですね。このフレーズの意味は・・・「そのくらい日光は結構だよ」「そのくらい日光はいいよ」という意味です。
Chris: So this phrase indicates that Nikkou is really a wonderful place to see.
Naomi: 英語でも、こういうフレーズありますか?
Chris: 使わないと思いますけど。
Naomi: もともとは英語じゃないですけど、「ナポリを見てから死ね」と言うのもありますよね?
Chris: See Napoli and then die?
Chris: I had not heard of it, but I can guess and try to say it, maybe. Like “see Napolis before you die.” Like “before you die you must experience the beauty of Napolis.”
Naomi: その通りです。ナポリはとても美しいところだから、死ぬまでに、っていうか、生きている間に見ておきなさい。っていう、そういう意味なんですね。
Chris: おもしろいですね。

Naomi: だれか、素敵な人に会ったんでしょうかね。
Chris: So you think this person met someone special?
Naomi: かな。じゃ、裏と表 を使ったこんな文はどうでしょう?あの人は裏表がある。
Chris: Literally "That person is two-sided" or "That person has two sides." In English we say "two-faced".
Naomi: たとえば、嘘をついたり、人によって態度を変えたりする人ですね。
Chris: でも、There is a flip side to everything. 「何にでも、表と裏がある」 とおもいませんか?
Naomi: あ~。確かにそうですね。

Chris: Let's have a lunch break.
Chris: 三つ目の単語は?
Naomi: 完成
Chris: "completion." じゃ "to complete" は?
Naomi: 完成する
Chris: 例文お願いします。
Naomi: これは1636年に徳川家光によって完成されました。
Chris: "This was completed in 1636 by Tokugawa Iemitsu." And that is actually this lesson's target expression. Now on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Chris: The focus of this lesson is passive sentences.
Naomi: Passive は 日本語で受身です。受身 はビギナーで勉強しましたね。
Chris: We're sure you're already familiar with passive sentences, but let's review the basic usage of passive sentences. 例文お願いします。
Naomi: 私は、妻に だまされた。
Chris: "I was deceived by my wife."
Naomi: 結婚する前は、料理と掃除が大好きだっていっていたのに・・・(笑)
Chris: Even though before we got married, she said that she loved cooking and cleaning....(笑)
Let's break this sentence down.
Naomi: 私は("I" plus topic marker wa) 妻に(by my wife。。。here particle ni marks the doer of the action.Tsuma-ni, by my wife) だまされた (was /were deceived)
Naomi: 私は妻にだまされた
Chris: I was deceived by my wife. In Japanese passive sentences, the subject is usually animate.
Naomi: そうですね。でも、歴史とか客観的な事実(objective reality)について話すときは、主語が人じゃなくてもいいです。
Chris: However, when the speaker depicts objective reality, inanimate subject is used. In that case, the doer is marked by によって. 例文お願いします。
Naomi: これは、徳川家光によって完成されました。
Chris: "This was completed by Tokugawa Iemitsu." Let's break this down.
Naomi: これは(this plus topic marker wa) 徳川家光によって(by Tokugawa Iemitsu or Iemitsu Tokugawa.)完成されました(was completed)
Naomi: これは、徳川家光によって、完成されました。
Chris: "This was completed by Tokugawa Iemitsu."
Chris: Let's say "Hamlet was written by Shakespeare."
By the way, how do you say "to write"?
Naomi: かく
Chris: The passive form is?
Naomi: 書かれる
Chris: Change that into past tense.
Naomi: 書かれた。
Chris: かかれた・・・ OK. Then make a sentence
First state the topic with a topic marker.
Naomi: ハムレットは
Chris: Then add the doer. Remenber the doer is marked by によって because Hamlet is not a person but the title of the book.
Naomi: ハムレットは、 シェイクスピアによって
Chris: Then add "was written."
Naomi: ハムレットは シェイクスピアによって かかれた。
Chris: "Hamlet was written by Shakespeare."
OK. Listener, listen and repeat.
Naomi: ハムレットは シェイクスピアによって かかれた。
Chris: (pause)
How do you say "This novel was written by Yukio Mishima"?
Novel is 小説 so...
Naomi: この小説は三島由紀夫によって書かれた。
Chris: Listeners, listen and repeat.
Naomi: この小説は三島由紀夫によって書かれた。
Chris: (pause) 日本語のかくは "to draw" の意味もありますね。
Naomi: そうですね。ですから、「これはピカソによってかかれた」も言えます。
Chris: "This was drawn by Picasso." マンガも「かく」ですよね。
Naomi: そうですね。英語だとdraw何ですか、漫画が。
Chris: そうですね。
Naomi: 日本語は「かく」です。例えば、「ドラゴンボールは鳥山明によってかかれた」とか、
Chris: I see.
Naomi: クリスさんは、好きな本や、マンガはありますか?
Chris: そうですね。あの、「ルパン三世」が結構昔から好きでしたけど。
Naomi: あー。誰によって描かれたんですか。
Chris: えーっと、モンキーパンチっていう変な名前の漫画家なんですけども。はい。ちょっと変な漫画ですけど、楽しかったですね。
Naomi: 皆さんは、好きな本やマンガはありますか?それは誰によって書かれましたか?
Chris: Do you have a favorite book or manga? If so, who was it written by?
Naomi: コメントで教えてください。じゃ、また。
Chris: See you in the next lesson.
