Lesson Focus

The focus of this lesson is Reviewing Modifying Clauses
彼はうちの近所に住んでいる那須実。
Kare wa uchi no kinjo ni sunde iru Nasu Minoru.
He's Minoru Nasu, and he lives near us.

In this lesson, you’ll review modifying clauses and particles that come after amounts.

Modifying Clauses

The most important thing to remember is that Japanese modifying clauses work backwards from English. First, let's take a look at a modifying clause in English:

Noun Modifying Clause
The bread that I bought
The person who is wearing a jacket

We call the phrase "that I bought" the modifying clause; it modifies and gives us more information about the noun (in this case the bread). In English, this modifying clause always follows the noun.

Now let's look at the same phrase in Japanese:

Modifying Clause Noun

かった
watashi ga katta

パン
pan

かった
watashi no katta

パン
pan

Here are some important rules to remember for Japanese modifying clauses:

  • The modifying clause comes before the noun.
  • The subject in the clause has to be marked by ga or no. Wa should be reserved for marking the topic of the whole sentence.
  • The phrase modifies a noun has to be informal form.

In intermediate level Japanese, it is very important to get used to hearing and using modifying clauses. This is because as your level of Japanese gets higher, the modifying clauses you come across will become longer, and you will even come across complex sentences where a modifying clause are embedded inside another modifying clause. In a long sentence, it’s important to identify where the modifying clause starts and ends to get the correct meaning.

  • パン
    pan
    "bread"
  • 私が買ったパン
    watashi ga katta pan
    "the bread that I bought"
  • 私が買ったパンを食べたネズミ
watashi ga katta pan o tabeta nezumi
"the mouse that ate the bread that I bought"
  • ネコは、私が買ったパンを食べたネズミをつかまえた。
Neko wa watashi ga katta pan o tabeta nezumi o tsukamaeta.
"The cat caught the mouse that ate the bread that I bought."
  • 父が買ってくれたかばん
    Chichi ga kattekureta kaban
"the bag my father bought for me "
  • 20年前に父が買ってくれたかばん
20-nen mae ni chichi ga katte kureta kaban
"The bag that my father bought for me 20 years ago"
  • 私は20年前に父が買ってくれたかばんをまだ使っている
Watashi wa 20-nen mae ni chichi ga katte kureta kaban o mada tsukatte iru.
"I still use the bag that my father bought for me 20 years ago."

Examples From This Lesson's Dialogue

  1. (私は)田畑高校に通っている高校二年生(です)。
(Watashi wa)Tabata kōkō ni kayotteiru kōkō ni-nensei (desu).
"I'm a second-year high school student at Tabata High School."
  2. 彼はうちの近所に住んでいる那須実(です)。
Kare wa uchi no kinjo ni sundeiru Nasu Minoru (desu).
"He's Minoru Nasu, and he lives near us."
  3. 実の弾くピアノはすごい
Minoru no hiku piano wa sugoi.
"Minoru is great at playing the piano."

Hon o jussatsu yonde, repōto o hyaku-mai kaku shukudai .
"The homework was to read ten books and write a one-hundred page report."

[amount]mo

も (mo) emphasizes the amount or the extent of something. It corresponds to "as many as" or "as much as."

■  Examples

  1. 日本から南アフリカまで18時間かかります。
Nihon kara Minami Afurika made 18-jikan mo kakarimasu.
"It takes a good eighteen hours (as long as eighteen hours) to get to South Africa from Japan."
  2. ケイトは漢字を5000個知っている。
Keito wa kanji o gosen-ko mo shitte iru.
"Kate knows as many as five thousand kanji."

Please note that this [amount ]+mo is used when the speaker thinks the amount is a lot. When the speaker thinks the amount is low, shika---nai meaning “only” is used.

  1. 日本から韓国まで2時間半しかかかりません
Nihon kara Kankoku made ni-jikan han shika kakarimasen.
"It takes only two hours and a half to get to South Korea from Japan."
  2. ケイトは漢字を5こしか知らない
Keito wa kanji o go-ko shika shiranai.
    "Kate knows only five kanji."

When mo follows “nan+counter” it means "any number of …" or "many..."

  • この本は面白かったので、何回読みました。
Kono hon wa omoshirokatta node, nan-kai mo yomimashita.
“Since this book is interesting, I read it many times.”
  • 日本から南アフリカまで何時間かかります。

Cultural Insights

若者言葉 (わかものことば)-young people’s language
In very casual conversation between young people, the "-ai" or "-oi" ending in adjectives becomes an elongated "ē" sound.

■  Example

  • やばい [ yabai ] “uh-oh, no good” → やべえ [ yabē ]
  • すごい [sugoi] “awesome, great” → すげえ [sugē]

Please note that this usage has an extremely casual or rough connotation and is not appropriate in formal situations.

野沢菜味: うーん。え?8時?
Kat: Uhh. Huh? Eight o' clock?
: もう!お母さん、何で起こしてくれなかったの?
Kat: Gah! Mum, why didn't you wake me up?
お母さん: 何回も起こしたわよ。
Kat: I woke you up countless times.
野沢菜味: 行ってきます!
Kat: I'm going!
野沢菜味: 私の名前は野沢菜味。田畑高校に通っている高校二年生。
Kat: My name is Nami Nozawa. I'm a second-year high school student at Tabata High School.
那須実: おっす、ノザワナ。
Kat: 'sup, Nozawana.
野沢菜味: やめてよ。
Kat: Stop it.
「野沢」か、「菜味」って呼んでって何度も言っているでしょう。
I've told you many times to either call me "Nozawa" or "Nami", haven't I?
那須実: 急げ、遅刻するぞ。
Kat: Hurry it up - we're gonna be late.
野沢菜味: 彼はうちの近所に住んでいる那須実。同じ田畑高校二年生。
Kat: He's Minoru Nasu, and he lives near us. He's also a second-year at Tabata High School.
: 口も頭も悪いけど、実の弾くピアノはすごい。
Kat: He has a foul mouth and he's not that smart, but he's great at playing the piano.
: 実のお母さんは、ピアノの先生で家にピアノが三台もある。
Kat: Minoru's mother is a piano teacher, and they have THREE pianos at his house.
野沢菜味: ねぇ、実、冬休みの前に出た宿題、終わった?
Kat: Hey, Minoru, did you finish the homework we got before winter break?
那須実: へ?
Kat: Huh?
野沢菜味: 本を十冊読んで、レポートを百枚書く宿題。
Kat: The homework was to read ten books and write a one-hundred-page report.
那須実: やべえ。
Kat: Uh-oh.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Naomi: やべえ(笑)
Chris: え?直美先生はそういう言葉使うんですか?
Naomi: 使わないです。あの、「やばい」を使いますけど。
Chris: 男がよく使いますね。
Naomi: クリスさんは、使いますか? やべぇ とか、すげえ とか。
Chris: そうですね。使ったりはしますね、たまに、友達中でとか。
Naomi: やべぇ とか。
Chris: そうですね、たぶん。So, Naomi and I were talking about so-called 若者言葉, young people's language. Naomi said she never say やべえ and I said...
なすみのるさん は rough に話していますね。Minoru is speaking kind of roughly.
「おっす」とか「いぞげ」とか 「遅刻するぞ」とか。男っぽいですね。Very masculine.
Naomi: 多分、Namiさんと仲がいいからだと思いますよ。
Chris: So you think it's because Nami and Minoru are good friends that he speaks in that way. They are friends, right? Not a boyfriend and girlfriend.
Naomi: そうですね、違いますね。ただの友達です。菜味さんは、「彼はうちの近所に住んでいる那須実」と言いましたが、この「彼」はただのheという意味ですね、boyfriendという意味じゃないです。
Chris: なるほど。
Naomi: では、単語の勉強しましょう。
VOCAB LIST
Chris: Let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson. The first word we shall see is:
Naomi: 何で [natural native speed]

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Chris: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Naomi: ここでは、カウンターを3つ紹介しましょう。
Chris: So we're going to introduce 3 counter suffixes? Sounds good. What's the first counter suffix we'll look at?
Naomi: 冊
Chris: Counter for books. Now watch out for the sound change before 冊.
Naomi: そうでね、特に一冊、(one book/volume), 八冊(eight books/volumes), 10冊(10 books/volumes) に気をつけてください。
Chris: So watch out for the numbers 1, 8, and 10 when used before 冊. There's a stop sound, or small "tsu", before satsu. What's the next counter suffix?
Naomi: 枚
Chris: Counter for thin, flat objects.
Naomi: そうです。例えば 「チケット」「切符」「切手」「紙」「CD」とかですね。
Chris: For example tickets, train tickets, stamps, sheets of paper, CDs and so on. じゃ、例文お願いします。
Naomi: 映画のチケットを2枚もらいました。
Chris: I got two tickets for a movie. Lastly, we have?
Naomi: 台
Chris: Counter for machines or vehicles... Is a piano a machine?...I don't know. Maybe using 台 to count pianos is an exception to that rule!
Naomi: そうですね。普通、台は車とか、コンピューターとかを数えます。ピアノも数えることが出来ます、
Chris: You can count cars, computers, pianos.... and so on.
Chris: 枚 and 台 are comparatively easy counters to use, aren't they.
Naomi: ああ、そうですね。Sound change がないですね。一台二台、三台・・・。
Chris: 例文お願いします。
Naomi: ケンは車を一台持っている。
Chris: Ken has a car. It's not 車一台をもっている
Naomi: そう、そう、わかりますけどね。でも、「車を一台」の方が自然です。
Chris: So 車を一台持っている sounds more natural.
Naomi: そうですね。
あ、あと、Number plus counterの後ろに 「も」を入れると英語だと as many as という意味になります。
Chris: Let us show you an example.
Naomi: そうですね。車を二台、持っている
Chris: This means "I have two cars."If you add も after the counter and said
Naomi: 車を二台も持っている
Chris: I have as many as two cars. [amount ] + も (mo) is used when the speaker thinks the amount is a lot.
OK. On to this lesson's grammar.

Lesson focus

Chris: In this lesson, you’ll review the usage of modifying clauses.
Naomi: そうですね。今から私が文を言います。皆さん、意味がわかりますか?
Chris: Naomi is going to read a sentence. Every time she reads a sentence, she's going to add information. See if you can figure out the meaning.
Naomi: カレーはおいしい。
Chris: Curry is tasty.
Naomi: 父が作るカレーはおいしい。
Chris: The curry my father makes is tasty.
It's not so bad, is it? You just need to remember 3 rules about Japanese relative claus皆さん、First, the modifying clause comes before the noun. Number 2, the subject in the clause has to be marked by ga or no. Number 3, the phrase that modifies a noun has to be in the informal form. Let's do some more.
Naomi: これはねこ。
Chris: This is a cat.
Naomi: これはネズミを捕まえた猫。
Chris: This is a cat which caught a mouse.
Naomi: これはパンを食べたネズミを捕まえた猫。
Chris: This is a cat which caught a mouse which ate some bread.
Naomi: これは私が買ったパンを食べたネズミを捕まえた猫。
Chris: This is a cat which caught a mouse which ate some bread that I bought.
Whew!(笑)
Naomi: 大変!(笑)でも、初級から、中級になるためには、Modifying clause は絶対必要なんです。
Chris: I agree. As your level of Japanese gets higher, the modifying clauses you come across will become longer, and you will even come across complex sentences where a modifying clause are embedded inside another modifying clause just like this one.
Naomi: もう少し練習をしましょう。今度は英語から日本語にしてみましょう。
Chris: Good idea. I'll say some English sentences, and your job is to translate the sentences into Japanese. Here we go.
Marco makes pasta.
Naomi: マルコはパスタを作る。
Chris: Next. The pasta Marco makes.
Naomi: マルコの作るパスタ
Chris: The pasta Marco makes is tasty.
Naomi: マルコの作るパスタはおいしい。
Chris: How did you do? Naomi-sensei, 質問があります。ダイアログに「 本を十冊読んで、レポートを百枚書く宿題」という文章がありますね。
これは、「レポートを100個書く」という意味ですか?それとも、「100ページのレポートを書く」と言う意味ですか?
Naomi: あああ、「100ページのレポートを書く」と言う意味です。
Chris: So "レポートを百枚書く"means "to write a one-hundred page essay". Not "to write 100 essays".
Naomi: そうですね。枚 (mai) is a counter of sheets of paper so 100枚はエッセイのページの数です。
Chris: I see. So this まい refers to the number of pages.
Naomi: はい。
Chris: ちょっと気になりました。でも、100ページのレポートは大変ですね~。
Naomi: そうですね。日本の学校だと、レポートはページの数を言われることもあります。
Chris: アメリカだと、words を言われますね。例えば、「2000語のレポートを書きなさい」"Please write a 2000-word essay."
Naomi: ずいぶん違いますよね。ところで、Chrisさんはどんな宿題がいやでした?
Chris: 僕は数学の宿題がいやでしたね。
Naomi: 数学の宿題でどんな宿題ですか。
Chris: そうですね、問題を特宿題がすごくいやでしたね。
Naomi: 数学の問題を特に。。。
Chris: そうですね。エッセイとしたら、結構楽で書きました。
Naomi: そうなんですか。リスナーの皆さんはどんな宿題がいやでしたか?是非コメント欄で教えてください。もちろん、modifying clausesを使ってくださいね。
Chris: So listeners, what kind of homework didn't, or don't, you like? Please let us know in the comment section.

Outro

Naomi: ではまた。
Chris: See you!
