DIALOGUE

English: Sir, please allow me to marry Maho!
父: 結婚して、イギリスに行くのか?外国には真帆を行かせないぞ。
English: Are you gonna get married and move to England? I'm not letting Maho move to a foreign country.
: 真帆は一人娘だから、今まで、自由にさせた。
English: She's my only daughter, so up until now I've let her do whatever she wanted.
: お金も自由に使わせたじゃないか。何が不満なんだ、真帆。
English: Maho, I even let you use my money however you wanted. Is there something you're not satisfied with?
真帆: 不満はないの。ただジェームズと結婚したいのよ、パパ。
English: No, it's not that. I just want to get married to James, Dad.
ジェームズ: どうして、結婚させてくれないんですか。僕が外国人だからですか。
English: Why won't you let me marry her? Is it because I'm a foreigner?
父: ちがうよ。・・・君が外国に住んでいるからだ。娘が...心配なんだよ。
English: No, that's not it. It's because you live in a foreign country. I'm…worried about my daughter.
: 娘は英語も全然できないし、体も弱いんだぞ。
English: She can't speak any English, and she's in delicate health.
真帆: お父さん、大丈夫よ。最近、体の調子も良いし、ジェームズが英語の学校に通わせてくれるって。
English: Dad, I'll be fine. I've been in good health lately, and James says he'll let me go to school to learn English.
ジェームズ: はい。ロンドンにはとても良い英語の学校がたくさんあります。良い病院もあります。
English: Yes. There are many great schools for learning English in London. There are good hospitals as well.
真帆: 日本にも一年に1回は帰らせてくれるって。
English: He also said he'll let me come back to Japan once a year.
ジェームズ: はい。年、1度ぜったい、帰国させます。・・・
English: Yes, I'll make sure that she comes back to Japan once a year.
: お父さん、一言、言わせてください。・・・僕は、真帆さんを絶対幸せにします。
English: Please let me say just one thing, sir. I promise to make Maho happy.
父: んーーー。
English: Hmm…
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 国際結婚がテーマでした。今、日本人の約5パーセントは国際結婚だそうですよ。結構最近、増えているみたいですね。
Naomi: へー。多いですね5%ってね。
Jessi: そうですね。So apparently 5% of marriage is in Japan or international marriages and percentage continues to grow.
Yuichi: そう言えば、ジェシーさんのご両親は、国際結婚ですよね?
Jessi: そうです!父はアメリカ人で、母はメキシコ人なので国際結婚です。
Naomi: あっ、そっか、そっか。そうですね。
Yuichi: ダイアログであったんですけれども、結婚するときに、相手の両親に会いに行くっていうのは、すごい緊張しますよね。
Naomi: 緊張しますよねって、やったことあるの?
Yuichi: ま、ないですけど。絶対緊張しますよね。
Naomi: そうですね。今回みたいに、こんな頑固なお父さんだったら、すごい怖いですよね。
Yuichi: リスナーの皆さんの中にも、国際結婚をしている人がいると思うんですけれども、是非、おしえてください、みなさん
Naomi: 聞きたいですね。
Jessi: そうですね。So there are any listeners out there who maybe in international marriage would be interesting to hear what was like to meet the parents of that person.
Yuichi: そういえば、ジェームズは、真帆のお父さんのことを何と呼んでいますか?
Naomi: お父さん。
Yuichi: はい。別に、ジェームズのお父さんではないですよね。
Naomi: そう、面白いですよね。
Yuichi: でも、あの、「おとうさん」と呼んでいますね。英語だと、結婚する相手のお父さんは、何て呼びますか?
Jessi: そうですね。 It’s actually different from Japanese. In English would be normal to use Mr. and then last name.
Naomi: あ、じゃ、ジョーンとか呼ばないんだ。
Jessi: Not the first at least.(laughs)
Naomi: そうなんですね。
Jessi: Definitely not in first if you want to make a good impression.
Naomi: なるほどね。日本だったら、もし、フィアンセになっているなら、お父さんお母さんで絶対大丈夫だと思います。ただ、日本語で、相手の両親を、「田中さん」とか、例えば「祐一さん」って言う風に読んだら、失礼になるので気をつけた方がいいですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: ま、普通は「お父さん」「お母さん」で大丈夫かなあっと思いますけど、もし心配なら、相手を呼ばないようにすることもできますよね。
Yuichi: 逆にそれが一番安全だと思いますね。
Jessi: Okay. So ???(00: 08: 09) briefly. The topic is what should you call the parents of your spouse or fiancee. In Japanese, it’s actually not appropriate to call them by the first or last name.Instead it’s OK to refer to them Otosan and Okasan especially you are already engaged. But if you want to be completely ???(00: 08: 27) you can chose to avoid current name anyone name particular.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: 最初の単語は、「不満」
Jessi: dissatisfaction
Naomi: 満足 が "satisfaction" ですが、不はnot という意味なので、不満は「満足していない」と言いう気持ちのことです。
Yuichi: 例えば、
Naomi: 仕事に不満がある。
Jessi: I'm not satisfied with my job.
Naomi: 「~に不満がある」という形で、よく使うと思います。
二人は、何かに不満はありますか?
Yuichi: 今の生活に不満はありませんよ。I don't have any problems with my life now.
Jessi: 本当?
Yuichi: うそです(笑) どうですか、ジェシーさんは。
Jessi: うーん、そうですね。しいて言えば。。朝のラッシュかな? If I had to name one, I guess it would be the morning rush on the train.Because no one likes beings squished in a small train car笑
Naomi: それは、まあまあ東京で生活すると、でてくる不満ですよね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: それはわかりますね。じゃ、次の単語は、
Naomi: 帰国する
Jessi: to return to one's country
Naomi: 国に帰る、国へ帰る、「自分の国へ帰る」といういみですね。最初の漢字は、「帰る」で、次の漢字が「国」ですからわかりやすいと思います。
Yuichi: ジェシーさんは、今日本に住んでいますけど、アメリカに帰国する予定はありますか。Do you have plans to return to the U.S?
Jessi: 今のところは、ないです!しばらく日本にいます。 No plans to permanently return yet - I plan to be in Japan for awhile.
Naomi: あーよかった。(笑)
Yuichi: そいう言えば、よく学校で聞く言葉があるんですけれども、日本でね。「帰国生」って、知ってますか。
Jessi: Ah, like a returnee?
Yuichi: そうです。ある人が小さいときに長い間海外に住んでいて、日本に帰って来たら、その人たちは、帰国生と呼ばれます。
Jessi: 帰国生 refers to a person who has spent their childhood in a foreign country.
Naomi: そうですね。帰国生の生は、生徒(student)の生ですね。最後の単語は、
Yuichi: 一言
Jessi: one word.
Yuichi: この単語、どういう風に使いますかね。 じゃ、例文を教えてもらっていいですか。
Naomi: 一言言ってもいいですか。
Jessi: Can I say something?
Yuichi: ちょっと言ってもいいですか。と似ていますね。「一言」って言うのは、「本当に少しだけ」という意味です。
Naomi: そうですね。後は、余計な事という意味で、「一言多い。」なんていうことも言いますね。
Jessi: one word too many
Naomi: 例えば、祐一さんって、いつも一言多いよね。
Jessi: Yuichi always says more than he needs to.(laughs)
Yuichi: そんなことないです。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we're going to look at the second usage of the causative, known as the "permissive causative", which means "to let someone do something." Whether a sentence expresses the "permissive causative" or "coercive causative" that we learned in the last lesson is determined by the context or the situation. Now let's learn how to decide which usage the sentence indicates. Could you give us an example from the dialog?
Yuichi: お金も自由に使わせたじゃないか。
Jessi: "I even let you use my money however she wanted."
Naomi: Now you might think "How do we know it's the permissive causative or coercive causative?" ジェシーさん、お願いします
Jessi: はい! In this case, you can tell by context. We have the word "freely", as in "to use money freely", so it isn't hard to see that this is the permissive causative. It's actually hard to imagine it as the coercive causative. To interpret the sentence as "Making someone use money freely" doesn't make sense in this context, right?
Yuichi: うん。
Jessi: The person who was allowed to spend money freely, that is, the one performing the action, is missing in the sentence. So let's add it in the sentence.
Naomi: あなたに
Jessi: The person performing the action is followed by ni, which is the same as the case of coercive causative. So, the original sentence was
Yuichi: あなたにお金も自由に使わせたじゃないか。
Jessi: But, the one performing the action is often omitted when it is obvious that everyone knows the person whom you are talking about.
Jessi: Let's check another example from the informal conversation between Yuichi and Naomi.
Naomi: 祐一さん、ジェシーの誕生日のケーキどうする?
Yuichi: ジェシーは何が好きかな?
Naomi: チーズケーキ?チョコレートケーキ?どっちでしょうね。あ、そうだ。両方買って、ジェシーに好きなケーキを決めさせようよ。
Yuichi: 賛成!
Jessi: So from the context, it's obvious that I wasn't going to be -forced to choose a cake. They were going to let me choose my favorite cake.
Yuichi: Are there any other ways to tell permissive causative from the coercive causative?
Jessi: Yes, there are! Aside from context, we can also tell from the sentence structure. There are two sentence structures that use the permissive causative. The first is the combination of the causative form and -てください, and the second is when the causative form is followed by the helping verb くれる. The helping verb くれる is going to be explained in the last lesson of this series in more detail, so for now just check the PDF to learn how to use it. Here, we'll take a closer look at the usage of the causative form and てください, which means you are asking for permission to do something. Sample sentence, please.
Yuichi: 眠いので、寝させてください。
Jessi: I'm sleepy, so please let me sleep.
Naomi: そういえば、ジェシーはカラオケ好きですよね?
Jessi: はい、そうですけど。
Yuichi: おねが~い!もっと歌わせて~。(ちょっとバカにしたように言った方がいいかも)Please let me sing more. とかいいそうですよね
Jessi: 言わないです!(怒)
Naomi: 失礼だな。
Yuichi: 直美さんは、お酒が好きなので、お酒をもっと飲ませて~。Please let me drink more! とか言いますよね?
Naomi: 言わないですよ!ちょっと、ひどーい!失礼じゃない。
Yuichi: はい、2人を怒らせました。I made both of them angry now. ごめんなさい。実は、「2人を怒らせました」が来週の文法ポイントなんです。
Jessi: Oh, really? So, that's the grammar point we'll cover in the next lesson. じゃあ、許します。
Naomi: じゃあ、祐一さんは、わざと私たちを怒らせたんですね。
Yuichi: はい、そうです。許してもらえたみたいです。
Yuichi: では、また次のレッスンで
Naomi: じゃ、また。
Jessi: See you next time.

ジェームズ: お父さん、真帆さんと結婚させてください!!
父: 結婚して、イギリスに行くのか?外国には真帆を行かせないぞ。
