INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: 祐一です。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. I hear it’s not just for Japanese men anymore!
Naomi: はい。では、今回のストーリーについて祐一さん教えてください。
Yuichi: 今回のストーリーも、テレビのニュース番組です。
Jessi: So this conversation is also in this program.
Yuichi: ニュースキャスターと二人のゲストの会話です。ゲストは男性と女性一人づついます。
Jessi: In the conversation, we have a news anchor and two guest speakers. They will be speaking formally.
Naomi: 今回は、復習のレッスンなんよですね。
Yuichi: はい、二つの「そうだ」を復習します。
Jessi: One of them is
Yuichi: 雨が降りそうだ。
Jessi: "It looks like it will rain." This is conjecture, or a guess based on what the speaker sees or feels. Another one is
Yuichi: 雨が降るそうだ。
Jessi: I heard that it will rain. This one is a hearsay.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
(television news program)
ニュースキャスター: 以前、この番組で「弁当男子」について特集しました。
English: We previously ran a feature segment on "Bento Men."
: 最近は、「水筒男子」が流行っているそうです。
English: Recently, it looks like the trend of "Thermos Bottle Men" is catching on.
: ゲストのお二人は知っていますか。
English: To our two guests - do you know of this trend?
森千晴: 会社に自分の飲み物を水筒に入れて、持ってくる人ですよね。
English: It refers to men who bring their own Thermos bottle to the office, right?
江藤さとる: 聞いた事ないですな。日本の男性も変わりましたな。
English: I've never heard of that. Japanese men sure have changed.
ニュースキャスター: アンケートの調査結果を見てみましょう。
English: Let's take a look at the results of this questionnaire.
: なんと、20代男性の会社員の約半数が、マイドリンクを持って来ているそうです。
English: Apparently, around half of all male office workers in their twenties take their own drink with them.
江藤さとる: へー。半分も。
English: Wow, half of them!
ニュースキャスター: 理由は、「節約のため」が一番多かったそうです。
English: "Saving money" was the most common reason cited.
森千晴: 毎日ペットボトルの飲み物を買わないでいいですから、一ヶ月3000円くらい節約できそうですね。
English: You don't have to buy a drink in a plastic bottle every day, so apparently you can save three thousand a month this way.
: 不景気ですからねー。
English: After all, we ARE in a recession, so.
江藤さとる: 私は、水筒を持っていくのはできないな。恥ずかしい。
Jessi: I wouldn't be able to carry a Thermos bottle with me. That's embarrassing.
ニュースキャスター: また、環境のために持ってきている人もいるそうです。
English: It seems that some people also carry them as a way to help the environment.
森千晴: 節約とエコで、一石二鳥ですね。
English: You can save money and it's eco-friendly so it's like killing two birds with one stone.
: そういえば、「弁当女子」「水筒女子」とは言わないのは、何でなんでしょうね。
English: Speaking of which, I wonder why we don't say "Bento Women" or "Thermos Bottle Women" too?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: 今回も、この前の弁当男子と似た話でしたね。
Naomi: そうですね。水筒男子。水筒を会社に持ってくる男の人ということですね。
Yuichi: はい、水筒男子もJapanesePod101のオフィスにはいますよね。
Naomi: あー、いますね。水筒の中には、何を入れているんですかね。
Jessi: There are some men who bring their own water bottle to the office, our office and Naomi is curious as to what they bring.
Yuichi: 水とかですかね。
Jessi: お茶とか、コーヒーとかもありそうですね。
Naomi: そうですね。大学にはいますか?
Yuichi: あー、あんまりいないかもしれませんね。やっぱり、僕はペットボトルを、自動販売機で買います。
Jessi: Yuichi always buys a bottled drink.
Yuichi: なるほど。
Jessi: 面白いですね。 Naomi thinks the reason why the words 弁当女子 or 水筒女子 don't exist is that bringing a lunch or water bottle to work or school is not that unusual for women at least in Japan. But this is growing new trend among younger men - and so these words 弁当男子 and 水筒男子 were created to describe the new trend.
Yuichi: あと、弁当男子、水筒男子の他にも、~男子と言うのはありますよね。
Jessi: There are other such and such 男子.
Naomi: ほんと?たとえば?
Yuichi: メガネ男子。
Naomi: へー、なに、メガネかけてる人のこと?
Jessi: Guys who wear glasses.
Yuichi: はい。女の子がメガネをかけた男性がいいっていう、そういうことですよね。
Naomi: へー、例えばなに、私メガネ男子が好きなんだよねとか言うの。
Yuichi: はい、そうです。もうメガネをかけてる男子だったら
Naomi: 誰でもいい(笑)
Yuichi: ま、ちょっとそれはわかんないですけど。(笑)
Naomi: あとは?
Yuichi: あとは、スイーツ男子
Jessi: スイーツ男子は何ですか?
Yuichi: スイーツは、甘い食べ物のことです。ケーキとか、クッキー、デザートのことですね。そういう甘いものが好きな男の人を、スイーツ男子と言います。
Jessi: So スイーツ男子 is a man who likes sweets.
Naomi: 祐一さん、スイーツ男子でしょ、じゃあ。
Yuichi: はい、そうですね。僕、実は、甘いもの好きなので、僕はスイーツ男子です。ここもやっぱり、男の人は、甘い物はあまり食べないんじゃないのかなあっていう風に思う人も、多いと思うんですね。だけど、甘い物が好きな男の人もいるということで、スイーツ男子という言葉が作られた、ということですね。
Naomi: なるほど。
Yuichi: では、このダイアローグの最後に、一つちょっと面白い言葉があったので、紹介したいと思います。この言葉は、これ、他のレッスンでも紹介されたと思うんですけれども、「一石二鳥」。
Jessi: killing two birds with one stone
Naomi: 一石二鳥は、四字熟語ですよね。Japanesepod101.comでは四字熟語のレッスンもありますので、是非チェックしてください。
Jessi: You can listen to yojijukugo lessons at JapanesePod101.com, if you have a basic or premium subscription. So check them out, they're really interesting. Yojijukugo lessons are suitable for those who are at the lower or Upper intermediate level.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 特集する
Jessi: to feature
Yuichi: 「特集」の、漢字の意味を見てみましょう。特という漢字は、どういう意味でしょう。
Naomi: 特別 Specialという意味ですよね。
Yuichi: 集はどういう意味ですか。
Naomi: 集める
Jessi: to collect, to gather
Yuichi: なので、「特集する」は「特別に集める」という意味で、英語だと(feature)になります。
Jessi: So 特集する literally means to collect special information. Could you give us a sample sentence?
Naomi: この雑誌では、おいしいラーメン屋を、特集している。
Jessi: This magazine features good ramen shops.
Yuichi: はい、それでは次に行きましょう。The next word is 不景気
Jessi: Recession
Naomi: 景気がよくない、景気が悪い とも言いますね。
Yuichi: 景気(business condition)。で、不をつけます。この不は、notという意味です。だから、(not good business conditions)ま、そういう意味になりますね。
Naomi: じゃ、例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: 最近は、不景気で高級レストランの客が減っている。
Jessi: These days, fewer people are going to expensive restaurants because of the recession.
Naomi: 次の単語は
Yuichi: エコ
Jessi: eco-friendly
Yuichi: 地球に優しいという意味ですかね。
Naomi: エコって言うのは、これは元々は英語の単語なんですよね。
Jessi: That’s right. We usually use the phrase eco-friendly in English.
Yuichi: ちょっとこれ発音が違いますよね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: ECOがエコになるということですね。
Naomi: エの発音になるんですね。
Yuichi: このエコという単語は、最近、日本でよく使われていると思いませんか。
Jessi: そうですね。よく聞きますね。
Naomi: 使われ過ぎてる感じはしますよね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: で、このエコっていうのを使って、エコポイントって言うのを知っていますかね。
Jessi: ニュースで見たことあります。
Naomi: あの電化製品、家電とかを買うと、エコポイントをもらえて、そのポイントを集めると商品券とと交換してもらえるっていうことですよね。
Jessi: Right. When you buy a certain eco-friendly electric appliance, you can get eco points that you can exchange for gift cards and so on. いいですね。
Naomi: エコの為に何かしていることってあります?二人は。
Jessi: そうですね。私はスーパーに行くときに、あのー、マイバックを持っていきますね。
Naomi: おー。すごい!日本語っぽい(笑)マイバックって英語じゃ、絶対言わないでしょ。
Jessi: そうですね。何だろう? I bring my own bagって言いますかもしれませんね。
Naomi: あー、なるほどね。日本語だとエコバックとか、マイバックっていう風に言うんですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 祐一さんは何かしてる?
Yuichi: 僕は、車に乗らないようにしています。
Naomi: だって、どういうこと?運転しないってこと?
Yuichi: 僕は運転できませんから(笑)
Naomi: そうですよね。ドライバーズライセンス持ってないですよね。
Yuicih: はい。なので、電車をね、東京はとっても電車が便利なので、はい。
Naomi: では、文法です。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll review the two kinds of そうだ which we covered in the previous lessons. One indicates hearsay from someone, and the other indicates conjecture made by the speaker based on what they hear or see.
Naomi: このレッスンでは、二つの「そうだ」を、復習をします。まずは、前回の文章から復習しましょう。
Yuichi: この流行はこれからも続きそうだ。
Jessi: It looks like this trend will continue on in the future.
Naomi: 続きそうだ。conjecture ですよね
Jessi: That’s right. This sou da is conjecture. The speaker's guess. We have the Masu stem plus Sou da.
Naomi: じゃ、祐一さん、もう一つの使い方hearsayのそうだをお願いします。
Yuichi: この流行はこれからも続くそうだ。
Jessi: I heard that this trend is going to continue.
Naomi: 続くそうだ informal speech plus soudaなのでこれはhearsayです。では、いろいろなシチュエーションで使って行きましょう。
Jessi: Now, we're going to have a short conversation using そうだ.
Yuichi: ジェシーさんて、声がきれいだし、歌がじょうずそうですよね。
Jessi: え?そうですか。You think so?
Naomi: あ、ジェシーさんは歌が上手だそうですよ。紘子さんが言っていました。
Jessi: So, Yuichi said that I seem like I'd be a good singer because I have a nice voice. Thanks Yuichi. And Naomi said that she heard that I'm a good singer.. Because I guess Hiroko was talking about it.
Naomi: 歌が上手そうmeans someone seems good at singing and 歌が上手だそう means I've heard that someone is a good singer.
Yuichi: 形に気をつけてください。
Jessi: Now, let's try practicing! We'll give you a situation, and we want you to make a sentence that matches the situation. Here’s the first one.
Naomi: ゴールドで、ダイヤがたくさん入った時計があります。その時計は。。。
Jessi: Picture a watch with lots of diamonds on it. What can you say about the watch?(5 sec.)
Yuichi: 高そうです
Jessi: It seems expensive or looks expensive. Let’s have a next situation. This time a little bit more challenging please.
Naomi: 難しいのを祐一さんお願いします。
Yuichi: はい。今日は、とても寒かったです。でも、外にTシャツと半ズボンだけで、一日中いました。なので、今はくしゃみと咳が出ています。
Jessi: I was outside in the cold all day today in only a t-shirt and shorts, and now I'm starting to sneeze and cough. What can we say about this situation?(5 sec.)
Yuichi: 風邪を引きそうです。
Jessi: It seems like I'm about to catch a cold.
Jessi: Now let's move on to そうだ which expresses hearsay. Can we have a sample sentence, please?
Naomi: うなぎと梅干しを一緒に食べると、お腹が痛くなるそうです。
Jessi: I heard that if you eat eel and pickled plum together, your stomach gets upset. 痛くなる which is in informal form, which precedes so da.
Yuichi: これは本当ですかね? Is this true?
Naomi: 本当ではないそうです。 インターネットの情報によると、これは、嘘、迷信だそうです。According to the information on the Internet, it is only a superstition.
Yuichi: へー。面白いですね。
Naomi: 聞いたことあります?これって。
Jessi: ないです。初耳です。
Naomi: お婆ちゃんがよく言ってました。
Yuichi: これ、ま、本当かどうかちょっと分からない文っていうのを、今から言いますので、リスナーのみなさん、今から言う文が本当なのか、嘘なのか、考えて聞いてください。
Jessi: Oh, that sounds a good idea. We'll give you a questionable statement. Please listen to the sentence and think about whether it's True or False. Here's the first one
Naomi: チョコレートを食べ過ぎると、にきびができるそうです。
Jessi: If you eat too much chocolate, you'll get pimples.
Naomi: これよく聞きますよね。
Jessi: 良く聞きますね。
Naomi: 祐一さん、これ答えは?
Yuichi: ブブー、ウソです。
Naomi: ウソなんだあ。
Yuichi: はい。なので、これもインターネットの情報によると、本当ではないそうです。
Naomi: よかったですね、祐一さん。チョコレート好きだから。
Yuichi: そうですね。僕、スイーツ男子ですから(笑)スイーツ男子には、嬉しい情報ですね。
Jessi: Next sentence, please.
Yuichi: ひらがなの「あ」を速くたくさん書くと、「お」になるそうです。
Jessi: If you write the hiragana for あ as fast as you can over and over, it'll eventually become a hiragana お.
Naomi: えっ、ならないでしょ、これ。
Yuichi: 実際にやってみるしかないですね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: 答えは?
Yuichi: 本当です。
Naomi: あっ、そうなの。
Jessi: 本当です。私もやってみました。
Naomi: 本当!
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: ほんとに、あをたくさん書くと、おになるの?
Yuichi: はい。ほんとにすごい速く、とにかく速く速く速く、書いてみるんです。そうすると、おになってしまうという。
Naomi: へー。
Yuichi: はい。是非リスナーのみなさん、やってみてください!
Naomi: ヒマだった、やってみてください。(笑)
Jessi: So listeners, please try that and let us know how it went.
Yuichi: じゃ、また。
Naomi: さようなら。
