Naomi: 誰が話をしていますか?
Yuichi: 祐二、ジェニー、ペーターです。
Jessi: In the conversation, Yuji, Jenny, and Peter are talking. They are co workers, so they will be speaking formally.
Naomi: なおこはいないんですね。
Yuichi: はい、残念ながら最後にはなおこさんは、ちょっと出てないですね。
Naomi: あー、そうですか。今回の文法は?
Yuichi: Lesson 14と15 の復習、それから「~と思う」「と言う」の「と」の使い方を復習します。
Jessi: In this lesson, we will review the Embedded Questions we learned in Lesson 14 and 15. We also review the usage of the quotation marker 'to'.

ジェニー:直子さんは間に合うかどうか分からないって言っていましたよ。
ペーター:そうか、じゃあ先に乾杯しようか。

ペーター:いやいや。家具がほとんどまだないからね。
English: Oh no. It just looks big since most of the furniture hasn’t arrived yet.
祐二:家賃いくらですか。
English: How much is the rent?
ペーター:いくらか知らない。妻に任せているから。
English: I don’t know how much it is. I leave that up to my wife.

English: I don’t think it's that expensive though.
祐二:このテレビすごいでかいですね!
English: This TV is gigantic!
ペーター:まだ、どこに置くか決めていないんだよね。

POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: お酒の種類はたくさん出てきました。今日ダイアローグに出てきたのは、ビール、チューハイ(サワー)、ワインでした。
Jessi: There are a lot of kinds of alcohol. In the dialog we saw beer, chuhai, and wine.
Naomi: ジェシーさんは、カリフォルニア出身ですが、ワインとかは好きですか?
Jessi: はい、実は私あまり飲まないですね。
Naomi: 確かに有名ですね、ナパとかですね。
Jessi: そうですね。はい。
Naomi: お酒も飲まないんですか?
Jessi: いやー、あの、カクテルと梅酒なら好きです。やっぱり甘いのが好きですね。
Naomi: 甘いもの好きですもんね、ジェシーさん。
Jessi: はい。
Naomi: チョコレートとかね。どうですか、祐一さんは?
Yuichi: 僕はチューハイが好きですね。あと、ビールも飲みます。
Naomi: あ、缶チューハイねー。ジェシーさん、チューハイって何かわかりますか。
Jessi: うーんチューハイ知っていますけど具体的に何かよく分かりませんね。
Naomi: 確かにそういうことってありますよね。ほんとは何だかわからない。飲んだことはあるけどみたいな。
Jessi: そうですね。
Naomi: チューハイというのは、日本のアルコールの飲み物なんですね。。本当の名前は 「焼酎ハイボール」 です 焼酎distilled spirit の「ちゅう」と「ハイボール」highball のハイを合わせて、チューハイになったみたいですね。ま、flavorはソーダーあじだったり、フルーツ味なんかのものもありますね。
Jessi: So Chuhai is an alcoholic drink that originated in Japan. The name is derived from "shōchū highball" and is usually flavored with fruit or soda.
Yuichi: 僕はあのチューハイはチューハイでも、あのー、缶チューハイをよく飲みます。缶っていうのは、canですね。canned チューハイ。だから缶チューハイをよく飲みます。あの、お店で飲むより、缶チューハイをコンビニとかで、買うと安いです。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。缶チューハイ which is just チューハイ in the can, right? It’s cheaper than チューハイ found at restaurant the stuff.
Naomi: お勧めのフレーバーはありますか。ブランドとか。
Yuichi: うーん、ほんとに、たくさんの種類があるので、難しいですね。だけど、カシスの味が僕は好きですね。
Jessi: あー、おいしそう。(笑)
Yuichi: 今日のダイアログで、最後「乾杯!」ってありましたね。
Naomi: 使いますよね、よくね。
Jessi: そうですね。
Yuichi: この漢字って、面白いんですけど、漢字わかりますか。
Naomi: おー、確かに面白い!
Yuichi: 最初の漢字は、「乾かす」という意味です。
Jessi: The first kanji means to dry up
Naomi: で、二つ目の漢字は、「さかずき」って読むんですけどグラスのことですよね。グラスを乾かす。だから、グラスの一番下がが乾くまで飲む。最後まで飲む。という意味みたいですね。
Jessi: あー、なるほど。The second character means the glass. So these two combined 乾杯 mean to drink one's glass dry.
Yuichi: 英語の表現で、Bottoms upってありますよね。
Jessi: ありますね。
Yuichi: そんな感じですかね。
Jessi: そうですね。はい。

Naomi: でかい [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Naomi: でかい [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jessi: The first word we'll look at is...
Yuichi: でかい
Jessi: big, huge (and this word is slang)
Yuichi: 大きいという言葉は、みな知ってると思いますが、この「でかい」という単語は意味です。この単語は、男性が使います。で、とてもinformalな言葉です。だから女性は使わないほうがいいですね。
Naomi: 時々、あのー、中学生とか、高校生とか、若い子が使ってたりしますよね。
Yuichi: うーん、そうですね。
Naomi: でも、基本的には女性は使わない方が良いと思います。
Jessi: So this word is really sluggy and used by male speakers, and top of that it's very casual. So it's better to avoid using it in informal situations.
Naomi: 祐一さんは、友達と話している時には、「でかい」って使ってもオッケーですけど、私やジェシーは、上品な人たちなので、使わない方が良いという事ですね。(笑)
Yuichi: ど、どういう意味ですか?
Jessi: The next word is...
Naomi: 家具
Jessi: furniture
Naomi: そうですね。辞書を引きながらね。
Jessi: そうですね。So listeners - what furniture do you have in your room? Try to say them in Japanese. It'd be a good Japanese exercise. If you're not sure of some answers, we actually had a nice furniture vocab video a while back that you can check out!
Naomi: 次は?
Yuichi: 家賃
Jessi: rent
Yuichi: 家賃は、家を借りている人が払うお金のことです。家賃は、毎月払います。
Naomi: 漢字を見ましょう。Let’s look at the 漢字.最初の漢字は、簡単ですね。家 です。
Jessi: The first kanji means house.
Naomi: 二番目の漢字は、賃。賃というのは、何かを使ったときに、払うお金なんですね。
Jessi: The second 漢字 refers to money that you pay after using something
Yuichi: 家を使っているから、家賃を払うということですね。
Naomi: 家のお金という意味ですよね。
Yuichi: じゃあ、バスとか電車を使ったときには、
Naomi: 運賃
Jessi: fare
Yuichi: 運賃を払います。最初の漢字、運は、運ぶという意味です。運転 driving の運と同じですね。
Jessi: The first kanji of 運賃, 運 means to carry.
Naomi: 運んでもらうときに、払うお金。運転してもらう時に、払うお金。だから、運賃って言うんですね。
Jessi: So 運賃 means "money you pay for transportation".
Yuichi: 次の単語は?
Naomi: 妻
Jessi: wife
Naomi: 奥さんという意味ですね。
Yuichi: そういえば、この前のレッスンでは、Jennyが「奥さん」と言っていましたね。
Naomi: 奥さんと妻は同じ意味です。でも、my wife というときには「妻」とか「家内」と言う言葉がふつうです。あと、最近は「嫁」なんていう人もいるかもしれないですね。
Yuichi: 最近、「うちの奥さん」って言う人がいるんですが、これって、どうですか?
Naomi: 聞きますよね~。
Jessi: 聞きますね。
Naomi: でも、ちょっと、私にはねー、これ間違って聞こえるんですね。なんか。
Yuichi: そうですね。だから、「うちの奥さん」と言わないで、「うちの妻が・・・」と言ったほうがいいと思いますよ。

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we'll review some previous grammar points.
Yuichi: このレッスンでは、復習をします。練習をたくさんして行きましょう。
Jessi: Since it's a review lesson, we'd like to spend more time on practicing.
Jessi: The first grammar point we're reviewing is embedded Wh-questions, which we learned in Lesson 14. Can we have a sample sentence, please?
Naomi:どこに行くか決めましたか。
Jessi: Did you decide where to go?
Yuichi:こういう風に使います。それでは、練習です。まく、英語で文を言います。そして、ポーズの後、それを日本語で言ってください。
Jessi: I'll say a sentence in English, and please say it in Japanese after the pause. Here we go.
Jessi(英語):Did you decide what to buy?
Naomi(日本語):何を買うか決めましたか?
Yuichi: 今度は、もう少し、難しい問題です。
Jessi: I don't know when my wife will come back.
Yuichi: 妻がいつ帰るかわからない。
Naomi: かわいそう・・・祐一さん。(笑)
Yuichi: 妻いませんから。
Jessi: OK, next, let's review embedded Yes/No questions. Can we have a sample sentence, please?
Naomi: 晴れるかどうか分からない。
Jessi: I'm not sure whether or not it'll be sunny.
Yuichi:では、練習です。英語の後に、日本語で言ってください。
Jessi: So please try and say it in Japanese after the English.
Jessi: I'm not sure whether I can do it or not.
Naomi: できるかわからない。
Yuichi: Or you can say できるかどうかわからない。 .
Jessi:次はちょっと、難しいです。Here we go. I forgot whether or not I locked the door.
Yuichi:ドアをロックしたかどうか忘れた。
Jessi: All right How did you do? OK.On to the next grammar point we're reviewing, 「と」.
The quotation marker 「と」 is used to report what someone else said, as in と言っていました, or talk about what you think, as in と思う。First let's review ーと思う
Naomi: "I think that such and such”と言うのは、日本語だと [such and such] と思うですね。
Jessi: Can we hear a sample sentence please?
Yuichi: 直美先生はすごいと思う。
Jessi: I think Naomi-sensei is great.
Naomi: ..Are you feeling okay, Yuichi?(笑)
Yuichi: なおみ先生はすごいと思いますよね、ジェシーさん。
Jessi: ね、すごいですね。はい。
Naomi: はいはい。
Jessi: 賛成です。
Yuichi: では、練習をしましょう。英語の後に、日本語で言ってください。
Jessi: I think Yuichi has a favor to ask.
Naomi: 祐一さんはお願いがあると思う。あー、なるほど。Yeah I agree.
Jessi: そう言えば、祐一さんは休みが欲しいと言っていましたよね。Yuichi said that he wanted to have a day-off.
Naomi: あー、休みが欲しいんですね、ゆうちゃん。
Yuichi: はい、そうです。(笑)
Naomi: あの、今のセンテンス「言っていました」は、「言いました」でも良いんですけど、「言いました」だと、1回だけしか言わなかった感じがしますね。「言っていました」だと、1回だか言ったことにも、何かも何回言ったことにも使えて、こっちの方が便利な感じがします。
Jessi: So remember that when we want to say someone said something and Japanese usually say 言っていました if you use 言いました it sounds like they only said it once. But if you use 言っていました it can mean they said once or multiple times. But usually we use 言っていました.
Yuichi: それじゃ、みなさんしっかり復習してください。
Jessi: See you next time!
Naomi: それじゃ、また。
Yuichi: さようなら。
