| Naomi: Payterっていう名前は？ |

| Naomi: あ、そうですか。じゃあ、imaginary nameみたいな感じですね。 |
| Yuichi: そうですね。 |
| Jessi: This conversation takes place the day before Payter’s party. |
| Naomi: 誰が話していますか。 |
| Yuichi: 直子、祐二、ジェニーの3人です。 |
| Jessi: In the conversation, Naoko, Yuji, and Jenny are talking. They are co workers, so they will be speaking formally. |
| Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは、この前の続きですよね。 |
| Yuichi: はい、そうです。Yes No quesion followed by ～か。 as in 本当か分からない。 |
| Jessi: I don't know whether it's true or not. In this lesson, you will learn about Yes/No Embedded Questions. What embedded questions are is all explained in Lesson 14. |

| 祐二:引越し祝いに、食器はどうですか。 |
| ジェニー:うーん。ペーターさん、毎日外食していますよね。 |
| : だから食器を使うかどうか、わかりませんよね。 |
| 直子:じゃあ、表札はどう？ |
| 祐二:え？表札（笑）？表札って...家の入り口にある、表札ですか？ |
| ジェニー:ペーターさんが気に入るかどうか微妙ですね。 |
| 祐二:あと、英語で書くか、日本語で書くかわからないですね。 |
| 直子:そっか・・・。表札はだめか。 |
| : ねぇ、ぺーターが何が好きか分かる？ |
| ジェニー:仕事？ |
| 祐二:会社？ |

| English: What about tableware as a moving gift? |
| ジェニー:うーん。ペーターさん、毎日外食していますよね。 |
| English: Hmm…but Payter eats out every day, right? |
| : だから食器を使うかどうか、わかりませんよね。 |
| English: We can’t even be sure if he’d use tableware can we? |
| 直子:じゃあ、表札はどう？ |
| English: Well, how about a nameplate? |
| 祐二:え？表札（笑）？表札って...家の入り口にある、表札ですか？ |
| English: Huh? A nameplate? Haha. Like the ones at the entrance of a house? |
| ジェニー:ペーターさんが気に入るかどうか微妙ですね。 |
| English: I think it's doubtful Payter would like that. |
| 祐二:あと、英語で書くか、日本語で書くかわからないですね。 |
| English: And, we can’t even be sure if we should write it in English or in Japanese. |

| English: Oh yeah…I guess a nameplate is out then. |
| : ねぇ、ぺーターが何が好きか分かる？ |
| English: Hey, does either of you know what Payter likes? |
| ジェニー:仕事？ |

| 祐二:会社？ |

| ジェニー:奥さん？ |

| English: But we can’t give him any of those things, can we! |
| 祐二:あ、ペーターさん、今一カレーのカレーライス大好きですよ。 |
| English: Oh, he does really love the curry rice at Imaichi curry restaurant. |
| : 週一で通っているみたいですよ。 |
| English: It sounds like he goes there once a week. |
| 直子:今一カレーには、ギフトセットがあるか分かる？ |
| English: Do you know if they have a curry gift set? |
| 祐二:はい、ギフト用レトルトカレーがあります。 |
| English: Yes, they have a boil-in-the-bag gift curry. |
| : これで、ぺーターさんはオフィスで大好きなカレーが食べられますね。 |
| English: Payter would be able to eat the curry he loves right at the office. |
| ジェニー:賛成です！ |
| English: Agreed! |
| 直子:決定！ |
| English: Then I guess it's settled! |

| Yuichi: Jessiさん。 |
| Jessi: はい。 |
| Yuichi: 表札って分かりますか。 |
| Jessi: はい、分かります。家のドアとか門についているものですよね。 |
| Yuichi: はい、そうそうそうそう。そうです。表札は、家のドアとか門に張ってあって、誰の家か教えてくれます。 |
| Jessi: でも、日本の表札とアメリカの表札は違いますよ。アメリカだと、住所が書いてあるんですね。 |
| Naomi: 住所だけなんですか？名前は書いてない？ |
| Jessi: うーん、名前も書いてある表札もあると思うんですけど、ほとんどがhouse numberとstreet nameが書いてあると思います。Nameplates in the US, at least, usually will have the house number and street name written on it, or often times just the house number. |
| Yuichi: 日本では、苗字last nameが書いてあるので、違いますね。 |
| Jessi: あー、そうですね。 |
| Naomi: アパートとかだとね、最近は、表札というものを出さないという人もいるみたいですね。私の友達も、アパートに住んでいる人は出してないみたいですけどね。 |
| Yuichi: それどうしてですかね。 |
| Naomi: 日本の表札には「苗字」family name が書いてあるので、防犯上とか、プライバシーとか、いろいろな理由があるみたいですね。 |
| Jessi: なるほど。So some people, especially people who live in apartments don't hang name plates on the door for security reasons. |
| Yuichi: なおみ先生は、あのー、表札出していますか？ |
| Naomi: あっ、あれ、うちー、アパートじゃないですけどー、出してない。（笑） |
| Yuichi: それはどうしてですか？防犯上とか、プライバシーですか？ |
| Naomi: いや、あのー、面倒くさいから（笑） |
| Jessi: Not worth the trouble.（一同笑） |
| Naomi: そう、多分、面倒くさいから出してないんだと思います。 |
| Yuichi: そうですね。僕の友達も、あのー、面倒くさいから、表札を出さないんだと思いますね。 |

| Yuichi: はい。あの、うなずくことです。 |
| Naomi: あ、なるほど。 |
| Yuichi: To nod.例えば、「２０１６年、東京オリンピック、賛成！(In favor of the Tokyo Olympics in 2016)」 |
| Naomi: 大賛成ですけどね、私は。 |
| Jessi: じゃ、disagreementは何ですか？ |
| Yuichi: 「反対」といいます。「２０１６年、東京オリンピック、反対！(Against the Tokyo Olympics in 2016)」 賛成と反対を、セットで覚えると良いと思います。 |
| Jessi: Yeah, it's good to remember these words as a set, because they're opposites. In Japanese, opposite is 反対, so an opposite word, or antonym, is 反対語. |
| Yuichi: だから、賛成の反対語は、反対ですね。 |
| Jessi: The antonym of 賛成 is 反対. |
| Naomi: する をつけて、「賛成する」なら、動詞です。to agreeという意味ですね。 賛成する。祐一さんは、東京オリンピックに賛成しますか、反対しますか。 |
| Yuichi: 賛成します。はい。 |
| Naomi: 何で？ |
| Yuichi: 何でですか。反対しないです。だから賛成です。 |
| Naomi: あー、反対する理由がないって言うことですね。 |
| Yuichi: そうですね。 |
| Naomi: なるほどね。じゃ、次の単語にいきましょう。 |
| Yuichi: 外食する |

| Naomi: 漢字を見ると簡単ですね。If you look at the Kanji, the meaning is quite obvious. 外 outside で食べるto eat なので、外食するは"to eat out"とか、 "to dine out"の意味ですね。自分のうちhomeではなくて、お店とかレストランとかで食べるということです。 |
| Jessi: じゃあ、友達の家で食べることは外食ですか？ What about eating at your friend's house? Is that 外食 too? |
| Naomi: おー、すごい。良い質問ですね。 |
| Yuichi: 言い質問ですね。 |
| Naomi: 友達のうちが、レストランでなければ、外食ではないと思います。If your friends house is not a restaurant, you can not say 外食 |
| Yuichi: そうですね。外食はお店restaurantで食べることを言います。 Jessiさんは、よく、外食をしますか。 |
| Jessi: 時々します。 |
| Yuichi: どこで外食しますか？ |
| Jessi: 私は、イタリア料理が好きなのでイタリアンレストランに行きますね。直美さんと祐一さんは。 |
| Yuichi: 僕は、外食するときは、ラーメン屋に行きます。 I often go to a ramen shop when I dine out. |
| Naomi: 日本、ラーメン美味しいですからね。 |
| Jessi: あー、美味しいですね。 |
| Naomi: 私も、ジェシーさんと一緒で、週末に外食をしますね。イタリアンだったり、日本食、和食だったり。 |
| Jessi: それから、外食するの反対語は何ですか。What's the opposite word of 外食? |
| Yuichi: 家でご飯を作ると言う事ですね。なので「自炊」と言います。 |
| Naomi: 漢字は、自分の自に、ご飯を炊くという漢字をつけて、自炊なんですね。炊くというのはto cook rice と言う意味なんですけど、自分でご飯を作る。と言うことを 自炊 動詞は「自炊する」です。 |

| Yuichi: 「引越し」は moving 住む場所を変えることです。 |
| Jessi: 「引越し」 means moving to a new place. |
| Yuichi: 祝いは 祝うことですよね。celebration。ですが、この場合はcelebrationじゃなくて、 |

| Yuichi: そう、プレゼント。贈り物 という意味ですね。 |
| Naomi: 周りの人が、「よかったね～」って言う風に 祝うTo celebrateするために 贈り物 present/gift を渡すからですかね。「～祝い」で「～プレゼント」という意味で使われること多いですね。 |

| Jessi: I don't know whether Naomi is coming or not. |
| In embedded WH-questions, you add か after the question part. However for the Yes/ No questions, you can add かor かどうか instead. |
| Naomi: 「かどうか」is like "whether or not" in English. ブレイクダウンしましょう。 |
| Naomi&Jessi: くる to come かどうか whether or not わかりませんI don't know.なので、 |
| Yuichi: 直美さんが来るかどうかわかりません。 |
| Jessi: I don't know whether Naomi is coming or not. |
| Naomi: ちょっと、練習していきましょう。Let's practice. 雨が降る は、 |

| Naomi: 「かどうか」の「どうか」をとっても良いですよね。 You can take out どうか. So |

| Naomi: どちらでもいいですよね。 |
| Yuichi: そうですね。話し代わりますけど、 夏休みに、旅行に行こうかどうか迷っているんです。 |
| Jessi: So Yuichi is debating whether or not to go on a trip for summer vacation. |
| 迷う is "to wonder, to waver, to hesitate." |
| Naomi: いいですねー。どこに行きたいの？ |
| Yuichi: 海外に行きたいです。 |
| Jessi: overseas 良いですね。 |
| Naomi: お金持ちですね。（笑） |
| Yuichi: でも、飛行機の席があるかどうか分からないんですよね。 |
