Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
テレビ司会:「安いのにおいしい、B級グルメ」を今日も、皆さんに紹介していきたいと思います。
Jessi: Today I'd like to introduce you all to cheap but good B-level gourmet food!
: 今日紹介する、B級グルメは「焼きそば」。そう!秋田県、横手の ご当地グルメです。
Jessi: The B-level gourmet food we're going to introduce today is yakisoba—fried noodles! That's right! This is the local specialty of Yokote, in the Akita prefecture.
: では、レポートを見てみましょう。
Jessi: Now then, let's take a look at the report.
グルメタレント:わたしは今、「じゅうじゅう、ごくり、焼きそばの街」横手 にきていまーす。
Jessi: I am now in the city of Yokote, known as the city of sizzling good yakisoba.
: では、早速お店に入ってみます。
Jessi: Without further ado, let's head into the restaurant!
グルメタレント:うわー。平日なのに、満席ですね。
Jessi: Wow! Even though it's a weekday, it's packed!!
: あのぉ、焼きそばください。
Jessi: Excuse me, I'll take some yakisoba, please.
店主:あいよ。
Jessi: You got it!
: はい、これが、本場の横手やきそば。うまいよ。
Jessi: Here you go, the real Yokote yakisoba. It's great!
グルメタレント:うーん。ソースがいいにおい!焼きそばの上に、目玉焼きが載っているんですね。
Jessi: Mmm... the sauce smells wonderful! And there's a fried egg on top of the yakisoba.
店主:そう。それが、横手焼きそばの特徴。
Jessi: That's right. That's the signature characteristic of Yokote yakisoba.
: 冷める前に食べてよ。
Jessi: Eat up before it gets cold!
グルメタレント:はい。いただきまーす。うーん。辛いのに、優しい味。
Jessi: Okay! Let's eat! Mmm! Even though it's spicy, it's got a nice, gentle flavor.
: あ、これは、半熟卵のおかげですね。
Jessi: Ah, this is because of the half-done egg, I see.
店主:そう。それだけの量があるのに、たった500円だよ。
Jessi: Right. Even though you get this much, it's a mere five hundred yen!
グルメタレント:本当ですね。
Jessi: You're right.
: こんなにおいしくて、すごいボリュームがあるのに、この値段!
Jessi: Even though it's so delicious and you get so much of it...what a price!
: まさに、B級グルメの王様ですね!
Jessi: This is definitely the king of B-level gourmet food!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。今日はB級グルメの話でした。B級グルメって何だか分かりますか。
Naomi: こういうカタカナの言葉って訳すの難しいですよね。
Jessi: 難しいですね。
Jessi: First, let's start with the word グルメ. This comes from the word "gourmet" and refers to "gourmet food". And then there's the word B級。 This 級 is the one that means "level". So it roughly means "B Level gourmet dishes", so they're a notch below A level, which would be the highest level. So... what kind of food is B級グルメ?
Yuichi: 基本的には、安くて、量が多くて、味も悪くない。というところですかね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Jessi: So large volume, taste and reasonable price make up B級 グルメ.
Yuichi: あと、ご当地グルメもいい単語ですねこれ。
Naomi: いい単語かな。まあ、よく聞く単語ですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: その地域で愛されている料理のことですね。
Jessi: So ご当地グルメ refers to food loved by people in a certain area, kind of like a local specialty.
Naomi: あ、そうそうそう。
Yuichi: はい。で、今日のダイアログで出てきたB級ご当地グルメは、ご当地グルメとB級グルメを合わせた単語です。まさに、この横手やきそばがB級ご当地グルメですね。
Naomi: なんか、おいしそうですね。やきそば。
Jessi: おいしそうですね。
Yuichi: はい、食べたいですね。ちなみに、この横手焼きそばは去年、B級ご当地グルメの一位になったんです。
Naomi: 横手っていうのは地名ですよね。
Yuichi: あ、はい、そうですよ。
Naomi: ふーん。誰がきめたの?
Yuichi: これはですね、B-1グランプリという大会で決まったんです。四年前から、始まったみたいですよ。
Jessi: So there's a contest called the B-1 グランプリ that judges the different types of local B級グルメ, and it started just four years ago.
Yuichi: ホームページがあるのでぜひ、見てください。すごいおいしそうな料理がたくさんのってますよ。
Jessi: You can check out the webpage, which includes a lot of delicious B級グルメ. Ah~ I get hungry just thinking about it!
Naomi: ね~!
Yuichi: はい。実際に横手に行ってみたいですね。「じゅうじゅう、ごくり、焼きそばの街」と言っていましたからね。
Naomi: うん。「じゅうじゅう」と「ごくり」両方とも擬音語、擬態語、onomatopoeiaですね!
Yuichi: はい、そうですね!この「じゅうじゅう」は、鉄板の上でお肉とかが焼ける音です。で、まあ、ここでは、焼きそばが料理されるときの音ですね。
Jessi: 「ごくり」の意味は何ですか。
Yuichi: 何か液体を飲んだときに、のどが鳴る音ですね。
Jessi: Hmm, so the sound when you swallow something. So, its literal translation would be something like "gulp."
Yuichi: あ、そうですね。はい。たとえば、ビールを飲むときとかに、「ごくりごくり」って音がしますね。
Naomi: うん、でもビールだけじゃなくて他の飲み物でも出ますよね。
Yuichi: はい、じゃあたとえば僕これやってみましょうか。
Naomi: はぁ?
Yuichi: 実際に僕があのー、水を今飲みます。で、「ごくり」という音を出しますね。
Jessi: はい。
・・・・ごくり・・・・・
Naomi: こんな音ですね。「ごくり」
Jessi: でも、「ジュウジュウゴクリ」のゴクリはちょっと違いますよね。
Naomi: そうですね。何かおいしいものを見ると、唾が出ますよね。それを飲み込む音です。「おいしそう。ごくり。」みたいな。
Jessi: Ah, so it's more like the sound of the gulp you make when your mouth waters after seeing some good-looking food.
Naomi: はい。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is... 冷める。
Jessi: to cool down, to get cold
Yuichi: 熱いものが冷たくなるという意味ですね。例文をお願いします。
Naomi: スープが冷めた。 (The soup got cold.)
Naomi: お風呂が冷めた。 (The bath got cold.)
Yuichi: 他の使い方もありますよね。たとえば、気持ちが冷める。例文をお願いします。
Naomi: 彼への気持ちが冷めた。(My feelings for him cooled off.)
Yuichi: たとえば、ある人をとっても大好きだったのですが、今はもう好きじゃないという意味です。
Yuichi: じゃあ、次の単語に行きましょう。
Naomi: 半熟卵 (soft-boiled egg).
Yuichi: ジェシーさんは、半熟卵好きですか?
Jessi: 正直あんまり好きじゃないんですね。
Naomi: じゃあ、生卵は?
Jessi: Do I like raw eggs? う~ん、ちょっと。。
Yuichi: じゃあ、固ゆで卵は?
Jessi: かたゆでたまご?
Naomi: かたい、ゆでたまご のことですね。
Jessi: Ah, hard boiled eggs? Now those I like. Love, even.
Naomi: 今、ジェシーさんに聞いた卵料理の種類を確認しましょう。
Yuichi: 生卵
Jessi: raw egg
Yuichi: ゆで卵
Jessi: boiled egg
Yuichi: 固ゆで卵
Jessi: hard-boiled egg
Yuichi: 半熟卵
Jessi: soft-boiled egg
Naomi: 半熟たまごは普通、soft boiled eggですが、横手やきそばの「半熟卵」は、「半熟の目玉焼き」のことをいっていると思いますよ。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: 半熟の目玉焼きは...なんですかね。 Half-cooked sunny side up egg?
Jessi: Yeah, I would say that's about right. So 半熟たまご usually refers to a soft-boiled egg. But 半熟 means half-cooked or half-done, so 半熟たまご sometimes means half-done egg yolk.
Yuichi: そうですね。次の単語は?
Naomi: それだけ
Jessi: that much. それだけ can also mean "only that", right? It's often used together with しか, so それだけしか means "only that".
Naomi: たとえば、 それだけしか食べないで、お腹減らない?
Jessi: "You're eating only that? Aren't you going to get hungry?" But, here we're going to introduce another meaning, "that much". That's how it was used in the dialog.
Yuichi: それだけの量があるのに、たった500円だよ。
Naomi: それだけの量は、多いという意味で使われていますね。他にも、「あれだけ」(that much), 「これだけ」 (this much).というように使います。例文をお願いします。
Yuichi: あれだけ優しい直美さんが怒った。
Jessi: Naomi, who is always so kind, got angry.
Yuichi: これだけ食べたのに、お腹がいっぱいにならない。
Jessi: Even though I ate this much, I'm not full.

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we're going to focus on the のに conjunction that means "despite--", "in spite of the fact that ---", or "although." It expresses that the expectation in the first sentence goes against that in the second sentence. The sentence after the のに construction, often expresses feelings of surprise or dissatisfaction with the unexpected result. Could you give us an example?
Yuichi: 昨日徹夜したのに、全然眠くないです。
Jessi: Even though I stayed up all night yesterday, I'm not sleepy at all. Let's break down this sentence, and check out the formation.
Naomi: 昨日
Jessi: yesterday
Naomi: 徹夜した
Jessi: I stayed up all night. Then, attach のに, which means "even though"
Naomi: 徹夜したのに
Jessi: Even though I stayed up all night
Naomi: 全然眠くないです。
Jessi: I'm not sleepy at all.
Jessi: So, for verbs and i-adjectives, you just attach のに to the informal form. For example, 悲しい meaning sad becomes,
Yuichi: 悲しいのに
Jessi: Even though one is sad.
Jessi: And for na-adjectives and nouns, you attach なのに to them.
Naomi: For example 元気
Jessi: Fine
Naomi: becomes 元気なのに
Jessi: Even though I'm fine
Naomi: 本
Jessi: a book
Naomi: 本なのに
Jessi: Even though it's a book
Yuichi: はい!ではちょっと、ここで練習のためになぞなぞをしてみましょう!So, let's do a riddle. じゃ、リスナーの皆さんとなおみさんとジェシーさん二人とも、一緒に考えてください。
Naomi&Jessi: はい!
Yuichi: 街があるのに、人がいないものなーに?
Jessi: Even though there are many towns, there are no people. What is it?
Naomi: 町があるのに・・・・・・人がいない?
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: ん~わかんないです。
Naomi: 全然わかんない。
Yuichi: 答えは、地図です!Map!
Jessi: あ~!なるほど!分かりました。
Naomi: (苦笑)
Yuichi: 街はたくさんあるのに、人はいないですよね。
Naomi: ...ほぅ。
Yuichi: じゃ、次で最後の問題です!
Naomi: はい!
Yuichi: あ、嬉しそうですね。
Naomi: はい!
Yuichi: はい。昼は短いのに、夕方は長くなるもの、なーに?
Jessi: Even though it is short at noon, it becomes long in the evening. What is it?
Naomi: あ!かげ?
Jessi: あ、私もそう思いました。
Yuichi: 正解です。かげ、shadow、が答えです。
Yuichi: では、ここで、のにconjunctionに少し慣れたと思うので、練習をしましょう!So let's practice. 2つ文を言うので、のにを使って、一つの文にしてください。
Jessi: Okay, so now let's practice using のにa little bit. You will be given two sentences, so please practice combining them using のに.
Yuichi: 彼は、有名です。謙虚です。
Jessi: The first one is "he's famous", and the second one is "he's humble". So how would you combine those two using のに?
[pause]
Jessi: And the answer is?
Naomi: 彼は、有名なのに、謙虚です。
Jessi: Even though he's famous, he's humble. And the next question?
Yuichi: 日本語を勉強しました。試験ができませんでした。
[pause]
Jessi: And the answer is?
Yuichi: 日本語を勉強したのに、試験ができませんでした。
Jessi: Even though I studied Japanese, I couldn't do well on the test.
Yuichi: かわいそうですね~。はい。でも、たま~に、「全然勉強しなかったよ~」って言っているのに、100点取る人いませんでした?
Naomi: いたいた。でも、全然勉強してないのに、100点取れるわけがないですよね。
Jessi: そうですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。で、日本語もおなじで、勉強していないのに、ペラペラ話せるようにはならないですよね。だから、みなさんもがんばって勉強してください。では、今回のレッスンはこのへんで。

Outro

Jessi: And that's all the time we have left for this lesson! See you next time!
Naomi: じゃまた!
Yuichi: さよなら!
