INTRODUCTION
Yuichi: ゆういちです。
Naomi: なおみです。
Jessi: Jessi here. If You're Smart, You'll Follow My Japanese Advice.
Naomi: では、ゆういちさん、今回のストーリーについて教えてください。
Yuichi: はい。今回は、居酒屋での話です。
Jessi: This story takes place at an izakaya, or Japanese style bar.
Yuichi: 秀太、康平、恵理子の三人が出てきます。三人は、友達なので、カジュアルな日本語を話しています。
Jessi: In the conversation, we have three people, Shuta, Kohei, and Eriko. Since they’re friends, they’ll be speaking informally.
Naomi: 今回の文法のポイントは?
Yuichi: 「なら」を勉強します。
Jessi: We're going to learn the conditional nara conjunction.
Yuichi: それでは聞いてみましょう。
DIALOGUE
Yuichi: 今度は英語が入ります。
店員:ご注文を伺います。
Jessi: Can I take your order?
秀太:とりあえずビールで。
Jessi: For the time being, I'll have a beer.
康平:おれも。
Jessi: Me too.
恵理子:私は、キウイサワー。
Jessi: I'll have a kiwi sour.
店員:かしこまりました。
Jessi: Thank you.
秀太:あれ、康平。お前、今日車で来たんじゃなかったっけ?
Jessi: Hey, Kōhei, didn't you come by car today?
康平:ああ、そうだよ。
Jessi: Yeah, I did.
秀太:飲酒運転はだめだぞ。
Jessi: You can't drink and drive.
康平:ちょっと飲むだけなら、大丈夫だよ。
Jessi: If it's just a little alcohol, there's no problem.
恵理子:最近、取り締まり厳しいし、罰金高いんだから。
Jessi: Recently there's been a crackdown as well as an expensive fine.
康平:おれが通る道なら、警察いないはずだから、捕まらないよ。
Jessi: On the roads I take, there shouldn't be any police, so I won't get caught.
秀太:捕まらないなら、良いってことじゃないんだよ。
Jessi: It's not a case of "it's fine as long as you don't get caught."
: お酒が入っていると、判断も鈍くなるんだぞ。
Jessi: When you drink, your sense of judgment gets slower.
: もし、交通事故を起こしたら、どうするんだよ。一生を棒に振るぞ。
Jessi: What would you do if you had an accident? You'd be throwing away your life.
康平:分かったよ。
Jessi: All right, all right.
: すみませーん、ウーロン茶お願いします。
Jessi: Excuse me, I'll have an oolong tea, please.
康平:じゃあ、お疲れー。またねー。
Jessi: It was fun, guys. See ya.
(車のドアを開けて、閉める音。そして、エンジンをかけ、出発する)
(Sound of car door opening, then closing. Sound of the engine and driving off)
康平:あれ、検問か。
Jessi: A breathalyzer check, huh?
警察官:はい、止まってください。
Jessi: Please stop the car.
: 『飲んだら乗るな。乗るなら飲むな。』飲酒運転の取締りを強化しています。
Jessi: "If you drink, don't drive. If you're driving, don't drink." We are cracking down on drunken driving.
: はい、息をはいてください。
Jessi: Please breathe out.
: はい、大丈夫ですねー。どうぞ。
Jessi: Okay, you're fine. Thank you.
康平:ああ、良かったー。
Jessi: Ah, thank goodness.
: 『飲んだら乗るな。乗るなら飲むな。』ね。
Jessi: "If you drink, don't drive. If you're driving, don't drink!"
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Yuichi: はい。まず、最初に、居酒屋について話しましょうか。居酒屋は、英語で、Japanese barですかね。
Jessi: Hmm. I think that's probably pretty close. Izakaya are places that are kind of like a mix between a bar and restaurant. They have sit down tables like you'd find at a restaurant, but people mostly go there for the same reasons they go to a bar - to hang out and drink alcohol. You can also order food there. The idea is that everyone shares the food, which is different from a restaurant where everyone gets their own thing.
Yuichi: ちなみに、ジェシーさんは、居酒屋好きですか。
Jessi: はい、大好きです。
Yuichi: ほぅ。
Naomi: 何を飲むんですか?居酒屋で。
Jessi: そうですね。いつもカクテルか梅酒, plum wine, を飲みます。
Naomi: あ、おいしいですよね、梅酒。祐一さんは?
Yuichi: えっと、僕は、ビールですかね。あの、ダイアローグで「とりあえずビールで。」ってありましたよね。この「とりあえずビール」っていうのは、「Just a beer for now」という意味で、言いますね。まあ、あの、日本の居酒屋には、たくさん、色々な種類のお酒があるんですけども、最初はビールというふうに、まあ、とりあえずビールで、と言います。
Jessi: うん。So, at an izakaya, a lot of people just order beer first instead of trying to choose something from the really long list of drinks.
Naomi: 居酒屋に入って、「とりあえず、ビール」とか「とりあえず、生」とか言う人はおおいですよね。生 は 生ビール draft beer のことです。
Yuichi: あと、これも面白いと思ったんですけども、居酒屋のマナーっていうやつですかね。ビールをビンとかピッチャーで頼んだときに、自分ではつがないで、人のをついであげますよね。
Naomi: あ!誰かと一緒に行った場合ね。
Yuichi: あ、はい。一人のときは自分でつぎますけどね。はい、もちろん。
Jessi: Right. So, I think it's part of, like, the etiquette, when you go to a restaurant or some place in Japan and you're drinking beer. When you order a bottle of beer, you don't pour your own glass yourself. Instead, someone else always does it for you. Right?
Yuichi: で、あとあのー、誰かのグラスが空いているなと思ったら、あ、いりますか?見たいな感じで。
Naomi: あ、飲みますかー?っていう感じですね。いかがですか?とか言いながらね。
Yuichi: はい、そうですね。
Naomi: ビールを入れてあげるんですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Jessi: So, if you see that someone else's glass is empty, it would be a really nice thing to do to fill it for them.
Naomi: うん、そうですね。ところで、飲酒運転って、本当に怖いですよね。
Yuichi: そうですね。やっぱり本当に、「飲んだら乗るな。乗るなら飲むな」っていう言葉がよく似合ってると思います。この「飲んだら乗るな。乗るなら飲むな」っていうのを標語っていいますよね。
Naomi: 標語
Jessi: Slogan, motto, or catch phrase.
Naomi: 社会のルールとかを標語で表したりするんですよね。
Jessi: So, this word ひょうご, in Japanese, not only refers to, for example, slogans used in marketing, but also, kind of like, social rules, or rules that you can follow. Is that right?
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: そうですね。
Yuichi: たとえば、日本の標語ですと、「押さない、かけない、しゃべらない」というのがあります。
Jessi: So, I guess, in English, it would be something like, “don’t push, don’t run, don’t talk?”
Naomi: そう。
Jessi: And when would you use this kind of ひょうご?
Yuichi: 避難訓練とかですかね。
Naomi: Fire drill.
Jessi: Oh. Fire drill, or like an emergency drill.
Naomi: そうそうそうそう。
Jessi: Ah, so something you use to kind of keep order in that emergency situation? なるほど。
Naomi: みなさんの住んでいるところには、面白い標語がありますか?あったら教えてください。

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Jessi: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Yuichi: The first word is 飲酒運転
Jessi: Drunk driving. So, let's break this down into two parts.
Yuichi: 飲酒
Jessi: Drinking
Yuichi: 運転
Jessi: Driving. So いんしゅうんてん is “drunk driving”. The second word can be used as a verb when you attach する.
Naomi: そうですね。運転する
Jessi: To drive.
Yuichi: ジェシーさんは、車を車運転しますか。
Jessi: アメリカにいたときは、ほぼ毎日運転してました。でも日本の運転免許証は持っていないので、日本では運転できません。I used to drive a car almost everyday when I was living in the States. But I don't have a Japanese driver's license, so I can’t drive in Japan.
Yuichi: 直美さんはどうですか?運転免許は持っていますか。
Naomi: 持ってますよ。ときどき、運転もします。ゆういちさんはそういえば運転免許は…まだ?持ってない?
Yuichi: そうなんですよね。あの、僕は、まだ運転免許持っていないので、運転することができません。ま、今年こそ取ろうと思います。 If I can, I'd like to get a driver's license this year.
Naomi: じゃ、交通事故に気をつけてくださいね。
Jessi: Actually, that's our next word.
Yuichi: 交通事故
Jessi: Traffic accident. And this can also be broken down into two parts as well.
Naomi: 交通
Jessi: Traffic
Naomi: 事故
Jessi: Accident
Yuichi: 事故だけでも使いますね。So just 事故 by itself can refer to a 交通事故.
Jessi: How would you say “to be involved in an accident”?
Yuichi: 事故にあう。
Jessi: 例文をお願いします。
Naomi: オフィスに来る時、事故にあいました。
Jessi: When coming to the office, I was involved in an accident.
Naomi: 「事故をする」とか「事故を起こす」という言い方もありますね。
Jessi: So, in the case where you’re the one who caused the accident, we can use the verb する or おこす。
Naomi: そうです。たとえば、わたしは 小さい交通事故をしました。
Jessi: I caused a small traffic accident.
Yuichi: 本当ですか。
Naomi: はい、そうです。
Yuichi: 車で交通事故したんですか。
Naomi: はい、交通事故を起こしました。
Jessi: Eh, true story??
Naomi: はい。本当本当。アメリカで。
Jessi: アメリカでですか?!
Naomi: 交通事故を起こしてしまいました。鈍かったんですね。
Yuichi: あ、その「鈍い」がつぎの単語ですね?
Naomi: はい。鈍い
Jessi: Dull, slow.
Yuichi: 鈍いの反対の言葉は何ですか?
Naomi: 鋭い
Jessi: Sharp.
Yuichi: 次の単語は、はく。
Jessi: To breathe out, to exhale.
Yuichi: 息をはく。
Jessi: 息 is breath. 息をはく also means to breathe out.
Yuichi: この「はく」…すごいよく似ている言葉がありますね。
Naomi: ん?
Yuichi: 「くつをはく。」
Jessi: To put on shoes.
Naomi: あ、発音がちょっと違うんですね。
Yuichi: はい。
Naomi: “To breathe out” の方は、はく。”To put on” は、はく。
Jessi: Right. So, in the case for はく as in to breathe out the pitch of the は is high, and then it drops down in く, whereas in はく for, to put on, the pitch of は is low, and く is high.
Yuichi: では、発音の練習をしましょう。So, let's practice pronunciation. Naomi先生 is going to say one of the two, so guess which one it is, “to breathe out” or “to put on”.
Naomi: はく・・・・
Yuichi: 今のは?
Jessi: To put on, correct?
Naomi: そうです。Right.ジェシーさん、ところで、発音を上手にするにはどうすればいいでしょうか。
Jessi: If you are trying to perfect your pronunciation of a certain word or phrase, try listening to it again and again. And then try pronouncing it, and then listen to how you sound. One way to do this is to record yourself saying the word, and then listen back to yourself saying it. If you do this, then you realize how you sound, and then you’ll be able to fix parts that you need to. You can use the voice recording tool in the learning center to try this out.

Lesson focus

Jessi: In this lesson, we focus on the last conditional conjunction, which is the nara conjunction. This is quite different from the other three we’ve covered so far
Yuichi: 頭が痛いなー。
Naomi: 大丈夫ですか。頭が痛いなら、帰ってもいいですよ。
Jessi: First, Yuichi says that he has a headache. So, as Naomi listens to what he says, she responds by saying 頭が痛いなら,帰ってもいいですよ。 Let's break down this sentence.
Naomi: 頭が痛い
Jessi: To have a headache. And then we attach nara.
Naomi: 頭が痛いなら、
Jessi: If you have a headache…
Naomi: 帰ってもいいですよ。
Jessi: you can go home. So, let’s look at the formation. You can attach nara directly to nouns and the informal forms of verb and i-adjectives. In the case of na-adjectives, you can use the dictionary form. Can we hear another sample conversation?
Naomi: 私、ラーメン大好きなんですよね。
Yuichi: あ、ラーメンが好きなら、一緒に食べに行きませんか。
Jessi: So, Naomi says she likes ramen, and Yuichi asks her if she'd like to go eat ramen together. Let's break down this sentence now.
Yuichi: ラーメンが好き
Jessi: You like ramen. Then, you attach nara to the na-adjective 好き.
Yuichi: ラーメンが好きなら、
Jessi: If you like ramen…
Yuichi: 一緒に食べに行きませんか。
Jessi: …shall we go eat some? Now, let's practice. Yuichi will say something to you - please give him some advice using a sentence with nara.
Yuichi: コメディー映画を見たいんですけど、何を見たらいいですか。
Jessi: Hmm, so, what comedy movie do you recommend for Yuichi?
Naomi: コメディー映画なら、ホームアローンがいいですよ。
Jessi: コメディー映画なら... this is kind of like “If we're talking about comedy movies...”, so, “If we're talking about comedy movies, I think Home Alone is good.” Let's try one more.
Yuichi: ニューヨークに行くんですけど、何を見たらいいですか。
Jessi: I'm going to New York. What do you recommend I see?
Yuichi: ニューヨークに行くなら、ミュージカルを見るといいですよ。
Jessi: If you’re going to New York, I recommend you see a musical.
Yuichi: では、あなたの住んでいるところのお勧めは、何ですか。
Jessi: So, listeners, please tell us, is there anything that you recommend where you live?
Naomi: 「なら」を使って、教えてください。例えば、ジェシーさんお願いします。
Jessi: はい。Well, I’m from a place called Santa Barbara, which is really famous for wine. So, I could say, サンタバーバラなら、ワインが勧めです。
Yuichi: はい。ワインが飲みたくなりましたね。
Naomi: いいですね!飲みたいな、おいしいワイン。
Yuichi: そうですね。でもサンタバーバラに行くなら、お金をためなくちゃいけないですね。
Naomi: あ、そっか… お金をためるなら、たくさん働かなくちゃいけないですね。
Yuichi: そうですね。
Naomi: がんばりましょう。
Yuichi: はい。

Outro

Naomi: では、このレッスンは、このへんで!
Jessi: That’s all for this lesson. See you next time!
Yuichi: さよなら!
